Firstly thanks to all who voted we were 20 or so ballots down on recent years but hopefully the results will be ok.
I don't actually have them yet but seandalai said I'd get them on Saturday and he closed voting a few hours ago so I'm sure he wont be too long. Big thanks to seandalai for doing all the hard work in the poll.
But the purpose of starting the thread is because of Simon H's offer of a prize.

What do you think of the state of metal in 2016?
Stereogum dude wasn't impressed
I could go either way on this one, but I think I’m primarily sort of dispirited by the fact that nobody in metal appears to be having the same conversation as anybody else. (Incidentally, by my count, 10 titles from Decibel’s list are included on our own top 40 below.) I think music benefits from having ubiquitous figures inspiring universal debate. I think prominent artists push forward the entire art form. I think metal today lacks standard-bearers — and maybe even standards — and as such, it fails to meaningfully engage with the culture at large. Right now, it barely seems to understand how to substantively connect with its most-devoted community members. You can be a serious metal enthusiast and probably not give a shit about a single one of the 40 albums on Decibel’s list — or our list, for that matter. And while I understand how we got here, I think that’s ultimately probably not a great development for metal. Stereogum’s own Tom Breihan summed it up pretty damn well in his late-November review of Worm Ouroboros’ What Graceless Dawn, saying: Underground metal is a funny thing. These days, it feels less like a genre and more like a loose constellation of vaguely connected mini-scenes … Seriously: Sometimes I think metal is less a kind of music and more a design sensibility. It’s hard to argue with that, except perhaps to say that even the design aspect is pretty inconsistent at this point. Notably, a number of metal bands enjoyed brief periods of commercial success in 2016. Anthrax’s For All Kings debuted at #9 on the Billboard 200. Both Korn’s The Serenity Of Suffering and Volbeat’s Seal The Deal & Let’s Boogie debuted at #4. Megadeth’s Dystopia debuted at #3. Deftones’ Gore debuted at #2. In a different world, that would mean something — those albums would be central to our collective understanding of this music. But in this world? Nah. None of those albums were included on Decibel’s list. None of them are included on our list. But, like, then you see that two of them were included on Rolling Stone’s list. So, I mean, I dunno. I’m not trying to single anybody out here. I’m pretty egalitarian in my view. Nobody’s right, nobody’s wrong, but mostly, my point is, nobody’s talking about the same music.

What are your thoughts on metal in 2016?
― Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 17 December 2016 20:56 (seven years ago) link
No metal album this year connected with me like several metal albums from 2015 and 2014. Maybe I wasn't listening closely enough, maybe I just didn't reach far enough. Most of what I really liked in those other two years I discovered through this poll, so I've got my fingers crossed 2016 pulls through.
― Tom Violence, Saturday, 17 December 2016 21:01 (seven years ago) link
As long as we've been friends you've always been playing catch up. Tom. Hopefully you can discover more as we roll out the results.

I have no opinion about the state of metal in 2016 but jfc that Stereogum article...
I refuse to believe that someone who actually reviews metal hasn't heard more than 5 records on that Decibel list. I've been absolutely terrible at listening to new music this year and I've heard 10 and I didn't even listen to the big ones (Meshuggah, DEP, Neurosis...)

lol at tom leaving out metallica. if only we all could
As for the state of metal this year... I don't know. I feel like metal suffers more than most genres from a vaunting of tradition and all the defiance in the face of experimentation just means that a lot of really great, boundary-pushing stuff gets buried in obscurity. Maybe that's true for a lot of genres, idk.
What I'm saying is that I've found a lot of the more interesting things I've heard this year just during the voting process for this poll. I doubt there's a dip in quality or a lull in progression, just that it is not immediately as obvious.

Aye, you dont necessarily need loads of #1s if everyone has it in the top 10.
No idea what points weighting seandalai is using
Jute gyte for instance often get a couple of #1s but get nowhere near the top 10
― Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 17 December 2016 21:50 (seven years ago) link
sub-genre wise has it been a good year for death, black, doom, thrash metal etc?
oh shit megadeth did an album as well didn't they. probably enough to get it in the top 20 regardless of how bad it is
― illbient microtonal poetry Surbiton (imago), Saturday, 17 December 2016 21:50 (seven years ago) link
how do you know it was bad? It got good reviews I think
― Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 17 December 2016 21:53 (seven years ago) link
xp black metal seems to have done well this year, although the subgenre stuff like blackgaze or black-krautrock and so forth are the things that seem to have gotten all the attention. The thrashy old-school sounding stuff I haven't seen on any lists. I assume that's the way of black metal, though, tr00 kvlt underground grim frostbitten necrodeath etc

The new Wovenhand is very good - but yes - not metal - much like some of the nomination polluters above. Funny how I personally still consider the stoner rock/alt metal/former stars genre-changing (40 Watt Sun) still somewhat eligible as metal. Oh well. I guess the poll title did include "Hard N' Heavy Rock" so I should stop grousing.

I also forgot to nominate, campaign for, or vote for this year's Solium Fatalis album. They're local to where I went to high school and they're pretty darn good. I keep meaning to spend more time with the new album (their third).

Oh and the Abbath record is really good so far. Is this what late period Darkthrone sound like, heavy metal by black metal guys?
― Tom Violence, Friday, 23 December 2016 21:02 (seven years ago) link
Not really. Stylistically, Abbath closer to something like Inquisition.
― Dominique, Friday, 23 December 2016 21:20 (seven years ago) link
Not at all, Darkthrone is al garage-y retro-thrashy fun, Abbath is super tight and heavy.

If you like Abbath, you'll probably dig Desaster too.

A friend who introduced me to Slough Feg in the late 90s put this in his top 10 this year:
RAVENSIRE "The Cycle Never Ends" - "Portugal's answer to the best metal band ever, Slough Feg"https://ravensire.bandcamp.com/album/the-cycle-never-ends
He also likes black metal more than I do, here's those + Cough:
ASHBRINGER "Yugen" (crazy-melodic and dense black metal by teenagers from Minnesota)MANTAR "Ode To The Flame" (thick and evil old-school black metal)COUGH "Still They Pray" (the best Electric Wizard album in at least a decade)DRAUGNIM "Vulturine" (heroic black metal from Finland)

xp - Yeah, the songwriting is brilliant throughout, complex enough to remain interesting over time, yet catchy & immediate in the manner of all good pop. Plus sharp lyrics, a timely theme (the co-option of the Bay Area by its tech overlords), dazzling musicianship, and tons of energy. Perfect combo of old-school riff worship, pirate-punk swagger, and prog excess. I fucking love Hammers, though, so ymmv.

How could we improve the poll and get more participation?Does anyone feel the poll has gone stale? Lots of people who used to take part dont now.
Would you all be more likely to vote if it was a bit fresher with somebody new running it? I've no problem handing it over if it will help the poll. But will take on board suggestions if people still want me to run it.
What would everyone like to see from the poll?
― Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Tuesday, 14 November 2017 21:02 (six years ago) link
I really like it the way it is. There’s a lot of good discussions, and I hope to be able to contribute a bit more this year. Is there a big correlation between the timing and participation?
― Siegbran, Tuesday, 14 November 2017 23:53 (six years ago) link
I found that holding it after xmas we get less as people were burned out by EOY polls by then. But those who complained about that didnt always vote in the earlier poll. But basically we have to run it when it suits seandalai. We cant do it without him and he has to do the big poll too. Plus he doesnt want to be bothering with stuff.
I also find that if big poll nominations happen before voting is finished for metal poll that effects us quite badly. I think holding it earlier makes it more likely to get general ilxors voting, but im not sure about metal thread regs as they like to give december releases a good listen.
