Finally back!

Bee OK, Thursday, 5 January 2017 02:58 (seven years ago) link

this year is totally different from the 2003 list.

Bee OK, Thursday, 5 January 2017 03:14 (seven years ago) link

Leaning towards "Yeah!" over "Drop It Like It's Hot." I have a soft spot for "Banquet" too.

"Float On" is fucking horrible but I remember it signaling a sea change on the local alt-rock radio station.

example (crüt), Thursday, 5 January 2017 03:21 (seven years ago) link

"First of the Gang to Die" was a pretty decent Morrissey song. probably the last one I would listen to on purpose.

No "Pieces Of Me" dang

this shit is bananas

If there's no "Pieces Of Me," then "Hollaback Girl" it is.

34 2151 Snoop Dogg - Signs

THIS SONG IS SO GOOD

So much of the 2003 list seemed so timeless. So much of this list feels very 'of its time' - Art Brut, Green Day, Gwen Stefani, anything Pete Doherty related, "Vertigo," etc.

Speaking of Green Day, the exclusion of Jesus of Suburbia is crazy. I don't care much for the rest of the album, but that song has aged incredibly.

josh az (2011nostalgia), Thursday, 5 January 2017 05:39 (seven years ago) link

33 2144 LCD Soundsystem - Yeah

still incredible

groovemaaan, Thursday, 5 January 2017 07:12 (seven years ago) link

Annie's Heartbeat saves this list. So much mediocre guitar drab on here.

13 834 The Streets - Dry Your Eyes
21 1612 Usher feat. Ludacris - Yeah!
32 2120 The Streets - Fit But You Know It

you have to go down to #62 before you find something I'd want to vote for, and it's a Wilco song lol

erasure of fiery furnaces from history a massive ongoing disgrace obv

I still love "You are the Generation..." and I am only slightly ashamed

memories to the backdrop of these songs > these songs
had a nice little journey looking at this list :)

nxd, Thursday, 5 January 2017 12:40 (seven years ago) link

I used to like Arcade Fire and Interpol a bit, mostly cos of who I was hanging around with at the time. Reluctant to go back there but I remember really liking Neighbourhood #1 for a time so that's the one I go for I guess.

Somehow this list is even weaker than usual

ultros ultros-ghali, Thursday, 5 January 2017 12:51 (seven years ago) link

Seeing as it was 2004, did anyone ever mashup "Yeah!" & "Yeah"?

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 6 January 2017 03:28 (seven years ago) link

I voted for Heartbeat by Annie. One of my top 20 favourite songs ever. I still think Pitchfork's finest moment was them making it their single of the year. Formed A Band would be a close second.

I still have a lot of time for Yeah, The Rat, Jesus Walks, You Are The Generation, Since U Been Gone and Everything Is Everything too.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 6 January 2017 03:47 (seven years ago) link

most of these have not aged well at all but i still love The Rat

ciderpress, Friday, 6 January 2017 04:45 (seven years ago) link

Been a long time since I've listened to Funeral but I still do love those Arcade Fire songs when they come on the radio. Some of the only great songs that show up on modern rock radio these days. Probably gonna vote The Rat though

josh az (2011nostalgia), Friday, 6 January 2017 06:01 (seven years ago) link

"the rat" but "little house of savages" is better

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Friday, 6 January 2017 06:55 (seven years ago) link

Looking at this list I think we can say that this year was pretty much rock music's last hurrah. Never again would it dominate charts like this. It had been going for a good sixty years, it had a hell of a run. Anyway, I'm voting for "Take Me Out" but I could've just as easily gone for "The Rat" or "Somebody Told Me" or "Can't Stand Me Now". All great stuff. Where's "Mr. Brightside"? Was that not 2004?

"Since U Been Gone" still sounds like it was made today.

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 6 January 2017 07:51 (seven years ago) link

Yea "Mr. Brightside" was '04 but I think acclaimed music includes it with '05 singles.

I remember this era lasting a few years past 2004, but I guess everyone has their own perception. 2000-2003 had very few college-rock crossovers. Actual chart toppers were douchey bullshit like Vertical Horizon, Crazy Town, Nickleback. Then suddenly for no apparently reason, 2004-2006 launched a brief era where Top 40 programmers added collegey stuff to their playlists, like "Take Me Out," "Float On," The Killers, Green Day, "Beverly Hills," "Feel Good Inc." It wasn't like "buzz clips" all over again, but the small handful was refreshing. By 2007, the Fueled By Ramen bands were still kicking around Top 40, but Franz Ferdinand and Modest Mouse were long gone.

billstevejim, Friday, 6 January 2017 09:12 (seven years ago) link

Galang vs Heartbeat vs Mushaboom for me.

boxedjoy, Friday, 6 January 2017 09:32 (seven years ago) link

A sprinkling of good stuff. Annie probably wins. Not crazy about the official version but I LOVE the demo of 'Mushaboom'.

there are songs i like more, but i feel like the answer has to be Since U Been Gone

mookieproof, Friday, 6 January 2017 15:46 (seven years ago) link

for all their sins, I still really really like Rebellion (Lies) by Arcade Fire

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Friday, 6 January 2017 16:05 (seven years ago) link

Ha ha haven't' thought about Art Brut in a while. God, they were awful.

Darin, Friday, 6 January 2017 17:25 (seven years ago) link

Yeah I don't get Art Brut at all.

billstevejim, Friday, 6 January 2017 20:04 (seven years ago) link

Definitely a weaker list than the previous '00s ones (nos. 32 and 35 are two of my least favourite songs ever) but there's still a fair amount of great stuff here:

2 254 Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)
5 397 The Walkmen - The Rat
6 412 Kanye West - Jesus Walks
7 514 Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone
10 651 M.I.A. - Galang
12 825 Snoop Dogg feat. Pharrell - Drop It Like It's Hot
14 1025 Annie - Heartbeat
22 1829 Phoenix - Everything Is Everything
27 2057 Gwen Stefani - What You Waiting For?
30 2109 Joanna Newsom - Peach, Plum, Pear
33 2144 LCD Soundsystem - Yeah
34 2151 Snoop Dogg - Signs
38 2402 Nathan Fake - The Sky Was Pink

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 6 January 2017 20:12 (seven years ago) link

Jesus Walks narrowly takes it for me but very close between that and Heartbeat for the bit when the live disco drumming comes in and of course the unabashed sweetness of the vocal melody. Jesus Walks is just wonderful though.

it was polled in 2003, was the number 7 song and finished with two votes:

7 326 The Killers - Mr. Brightside 2

1. The Killers - All These Things That I've Done
2. Scissor Sisters - Take Your Mama
3. Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

I still love Art Brut, even if the whole project was an extended knowing wink to a particular crowd of arty hipsters.

Same here. I still play the first and third albums a lot.

"Galang" would probably be the most startling song on the list in 2004, but "Heartbeat" is the easiest choice now.

That Walkmen song is good but I never really got how it always beats out all these other singles. Pretty sure it made p4k's top 20 in their 2000s list.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 10 January 2017 00:15 (seven years ago) link

Excellent result. Heartbeat is perfection.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 10 January 2017 01:40 (seven years ago) link
