How could you not be instantly attracted to a girl/guy in a ________ t-shirt?

Who, or what, best fills the blank?

It's amazing how powerful these (really meaningless, ultimately) signifiers csn be. But it was love at first sight with the Thin Lizzy girl in Wichita KS about 10 years ago (esp cos it was Wichita KS) and then another repping Giant Sand at SXSW. What was so intriguing about Giant Sand? Couldn't say.

I start these inane threads so you don't have to.

I suppose the sweet spot for something like this is a band that's really great, but also obscure enough that the shirt serves as compelling evidence of good taste.

For instance: Iron Maiden is one of my favorite bands, but they could easily fall into the role of "best band that a person with bad taste likes" (h/t to sh@kedown, who I believe first said this in the context of Tool). So an Iron Maiden t-shirt, while intriguing, would not be nearly as alluring as, say, a Gang of Four t-shirt (even though I listen to Maiden a lot more).

my alternative answer is a 70s concept album era Kinks t shirt

that is just a boss t-shirt

JRN, yeah, a Giant Sand fan goes out of her way to find good music, and yet there's nothing about proclaiming your interest in Giant Sand that seems all "look at me". Plus I'm a big fan.

A Nixon T-shirt was my first thought, but I've already been chastised for that.

Girls in Smiths T's were my catnip/kryptonite in college.

Nixon t shirt seems like a dangerous choice, because how do you distinguish between a) someone who thinks Nixon was a fascinating monster and b) someone who's a genuine Nixon fanboy/fangirl, like Roger Stone with his collection of Nixon memorabilia, Nixon tattoo etc

soref, Thursday, 5 January 2017 04:29 (seven years ago) link

and by the time you find out, it's too late, you're already in love with Roger Stone

soref, Thursday, 5 January 2017 04:32 (seven years ago) link

Ha I thought you meant a band named Nixon. A girl in a Richard M Nixon tee... provocative, at least.

I actually did have a good-looking woman inquire about a Nixon T-shirt I was wearing a few years ago. I immediately turned on what Anthony Hopkins referred to as "the old Nixon charm," after which she just seemed to disappear into the night.

I saw a guy walking around my uni campus wearing a Reagan/Bush t shirt a few months ago and I couldn't tell if he was sincere or if he had taken irony to an incredible new level

Wozniak on Kimye's Baby (jaymc), Thursday, 5 January 2017 06:06 (seven years ago) link

but I maintain that it could make for a very fucked up ironic urban outfitters t shirt

Birthday Party, Gun Club, Funkadelic, Sun Ra, Meat Puppets, Tusker Beer. Among others.

I know, right? My cousin had that shirt back when the album came out, via Mary Martin their fan club secretary. I've wanted one ever since, amazed I could GIS one.

if I see a girl/guy in a ________ t-shirt I'm probably going to wonder which of my children they're friends with

By the criteria mentioned in my last post, this would probably be the ultimate for me:

probably the closest I came to this feeling IRL was with a guy in a vintage Pop Group "We are all Prostitutes" shirt.
