List of remixes that add extra vocals to the track (not counting rap remixes)

I thought this is an interesting phenonemon, as typically the remix only uses the vocal track from the original version. Obviously these tend to be "official" extended mixes or otherwise done in co-operation with the original artists, as they usually involve recording extra material with her/him, or acquiring material that was cut from the original.

(Please don't list rap remixes here, because they are a totally different thing where the whole point is to add extra guest verses to the tune.)

1) Wham! - Last Christmas (Pudding Mix). This is the extended mix of the single that includes some extra moaning and ad-libbing by George Michael. As far as I know, it was mixed by Michael himself.

2) Grace Jones - Love on Top of Love (Killer Kiss) (The Cole & Clivilles Garage House Mix). This remix has a completely new, mostly spoken-word vocal track that sounds like it was improvised by Jones in the studio. Besides her repeating the title of the track every now and then, the new vocals are totally different from the original version.

3) U2 - Lemon (Perfect Mix). This is remixed by Paul Oakenfold, and it adds two new verses ("Man makes a picture..." / "Man builds a city...") by a female vocalist that aren't in the original, which only has the male vocals. I've no idea whether these new vocals were something that was left out of the original, or whether they were recorded specifically for Oakenfold's remix. I've never managed to find out who the woman singing on the remix is, and I'm not the only one who's wondered about that.

Sorry, a typo there, the remix of Lemon is called "Perfecto Mix", not "Perfect". Perfecto was the name Oakenfold and Steve Osborne used for their remixes.

4) Madonna - Justify My Love (The Beast Within Mix). Like "Love on Top of Love", this has a completely new vocal track. The chorus line from the original version is repeated a couple of times, but the rest of it comprises Madonna reading verses from the Book of Revelation. Apparently it was also criticised for being Anti-Semitic, because it includes the line (from the Book of Revelation), "and the slander of those who say they are Jews, but they are not, they are a synagogue of Satan". I've no idea why Madonna thought why these Bible verses would mix with the theme of the original tune, but I guess mixing the sacred and the sinful has alway been her thing.

Cygnus X Positron, originally the B-side to Superstring, was remixed with vocals ten years later: youtube here

Good thread idea.

Susumu Yokota - King of Darkness (Swell Sessions Stateless Remix) has a vocal track on what was an instrumental original.

Hmm, interesting, I hadn't thought of instrumental club tracks getting a vocal remix, which is a bit different phenomenon than adding extra vocals to a tune that already has them... But if we're mentioning those two, Robotnico II's trance classic "Backfired II" got a fairly awful vocal mix later on.

Tuomas, Monday, 16 January 2017 15:32 (seven years ago) link

And IIRC there was even an (also awful) vocal remix of "Higher State of Consciousness"?

Boredoms - Ant 10 (Remix By Lindstrøm)
Features crazy vocalist intoning bits of older Vision Creation Newsun melody on remixed track

There's of course Friendly Fires - Paris (Aeroplane Remix), which completely replaces the original vocals with Au Revoir Simone.

The Orb - Perpetual Dawn (Solar Flare Extended)

Remixes by Youth added a prominent vocal refrain sung by Shola Phillips. Of course Kris Weston said he hated it.

Yeah that version is pretty bad, at least compared to the Ultrabass mixes

At least one 'Path' version of FSOL's 'Lifeforms' single features additional vocals from Liz Fraser not on the version with the video (as played on MTV at the time)

That reminds me, there's additional vocals by Alison Goldfrapp on the extended "suite" version of Orbital's "The Box" that's on the maxi single.

Does the no rap remixes rule mean no remixes of rap songs, or no to anything that adds raps?

Noel Emits, Monday, 16 January 2017 21:22 (seven years ago) link

The Au Revoir Simone vocals are on the original Friendly Fires track, just buried – Vito was surprised to discover them when he was sent the multitracks. Also, Friendly Firesbloke does remain on the remix in one spot.

I really liked the mini-gimmick Tiga would do in the mid-‘00s when remixing a song (qua song), of adding his own voice in one place, generally on the title, if said title appeared in the lyrics.

The Karen Finley threadbump reminds one of the incredible remix of Jump In The River by Sinead O’Connor with a verse and ranting and panting by Finley.

Lazyitis - One Armed Boxer by Happy Mondays turns the entire song into a duet between Karl Denver and the Mondays’ singer Shaun Ryder.

John Oswald's remix of Lick My Decals Off Baby has some vocals by Don at the end that aren't audible on any other version of the song I've heard.

Don who?

There is a terrible mix of New Order's Subculture, done by Razormaid, that features a female vocalist that doesn't feature anywhere on any other versions.

Razormaid are edits/bootlegs though

Don who?

Don Van Vliet, singer of Captain Beefheart And The Magic Band. John Oswald's Plunderphonics sampling is a cut-up of multiple tracks from the album, plus vocals from Trout Mask Replica.

Wham! did this a lot actually.

"Everything She Wants" 12" remix is my favorite version of the song cos of the extra bridge they add towards the end. the song's incomplete without that part to me

Saint Etienne remix of El Perro Del Mar - "Walk On By"

Everything Moves Towards The Sun (Ross), Thursday, 19 January 2017 02:54 (seven years ago) link

oh and my least favorite example

"The Wicker Man" by Iron Maiden, had a radio mix where they added Dickinson doing a call and response with himself. the album version = him going "your time will come" four times and that's the chorus, that's it. radio mix added him singing "thy will be done" after your time will come and it was jarring and cheesy.

Neanderthal, Thursday, 19 January 2017 02:54 (seven years ago) link

Miami Sound Machine - Bad Boy. The extended mixes have a whole extra verse in the middle of the song, and what sounds to me like extra harmonies at the beginning of one specific mix, like the 'club dub' mix or something. The single mix sounds so different from the album version as it is, and neither has the extra verse. There are also 2 different videos. It's a mess to keep track of. Great song though.

On the double-disc "Everything is Wrong" remix album by Moby, the instrumental "Hymn" gets a remix with vocals.. a woman repeating "Because I believe in God.."

LimbsKing, Saturday, 21 January 2017 11:14 (seven years ago) link

"Hymn" had some vocal samples when it was released as a single in 1994 (the "This Is My Dream" mix was the one they usually played on radio and MTV), but for some reason Moby didn't include that version on the Everything Is Wrong, rather than an instrumental piano version (which is based on the coda of the "European Mix" of "Hymn").

Sisa Mix of Something About You by Level 42 has a chant bit that qualifies for this thread.
Flesh And Blood version of The Word Girl by Scritti Politti has a totally different vocal, by Ranking Ann.
There must be some Pet Shop Boys ones - the Always On My Mind on Introspective?

the Always On My Mind on Introspective?

That was the first thing that popped into my head, but the thread title says no rap.

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 22 January 2017 12:34 (seven years ago) link

also, that's a completely different recording, not a remix.

Pet Shop Boys remixes for others have form for adding vocals though - Hallo Spaceboy for David Bowie, the PSB Maxi Mix of Sorry for Madonna

Razormaid are edits/bootlegs though

That's what I always thought too, but a couple of years ago I bought a Razormaid comp which included their remix of Telex's "Raised by Snakes", and it has normal vocals instead of the vocoderised vocals of the original version. So they must've had access to the original tapes for that one at least.

The 12" remix of 'La Femme Accident' by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark has some extra vocals on there which aren't in the 7"/album version. Having said that, it sounds like the whole thing is re-sung to me.
