Thank you to everyone who participated in our nomination process. We have accumulated 475 sad, sad emo albums (and pop-punk, ska - not much of that - and other sundry mall rock classics) for this poll.
You have 30 votes for your ballots. Please copy/paste directly from the list. I've hopefully weeded out all duplicates.
Fill out your ballot on a standard email body and email it to ilxemopoll AT gmail DOT com by Sunday, March 5th.

i can't imagine these albums need me to campaign for them however i consider them not only the pinnacle of the genre but among the greatest albums ever made and any one who hasn't heard either should listen to both:

What do they sound like?
Okara = mathy/dissonant/trebly/lo-fi; less screaming on Months Like Years

Since I'm not sure how well-known The Appleseed Cast is around here, I just want to give a shout out to their masterpiece(s), Low Level Owl. It's like the title track of SDRE's Rising Tide stretched to two hours. It has everything. For everyone. It's that good.

ok I'm gonna make my Juno pitch and then shut up about it
This is the Way it Goes and Goes and GoesI think a lot of us go through that phase when we're young and we want things that are just ours. That's why I spent a lot of my adolescence listening to british bands no one else around me gave a fuck about or had even heard of. In the same way, Juno were an obvious band for me to latch onto because even at the time (the late 90s / early aughts) it didn't seem like they were getting the shine of other bands in their orbit (most obviously the Dismemberment Plan, with whom they split a 7-inch [their half was better imo]). Anyway, TITWIGAGAG still sounds fresh and dynamic to me thousands of listens later. The way "All Your Friends are Comedians" (and of the best singles post-hardcore ever produced) shifts back and forth from 6/8 to 4/4 without a halt in intensity always amazes me. No other band (with one possible exception) ever used three guitarists with greater ingenuity and grace - listen to the overlapping melodies and tones in "The Great Salt Lake." No other band combined the dynamics of post-rock ("Leave a Clean Camp...", "January Arms") with an emo feel more convincingly. I named my first college radio show after "A Listening Ear." As a now 30-year-old miserable basement fuckboy this is still completely my shit.
Sample tracks: "All Your Friends are Comedians," "The Great Salt Lake," "The Young Influentials"
A Future Lived in Past Tense"Kitchen sink final albums" are one of my favorite kinds (see also: Young Machetes). In another thread, we were discussing how when you're young and impressionable, you're especially vulnerable to the whims of tastemakers, and I remember Pitchfork's middling review (basically slamming it for being too indulgent) causing me a lot of angst. I think this must have been one of the first albums I loved *for* its flaws and not in spite of them. The ludicrous song titles, the beyond-cryptic lyrics and even more anguished vocals, the glacially paced songs - I still love it all. The harmonic details are still completely ridiculous, now aided by Nate Mendel (SDRE, the Foos) on bass, and again what really impresses me is the fluidity of the songwriting and performances. Despite the many genres being touched on (now with an added 70s grandiosity) nothing feels artificially synthesized. This is one of those records you don't come back from after making, so I was the opposite of surprised when they split afterwards. I'm still angry that it's impossible to buy either of these albums on vinyl for less than three figures.
Sample tracks: "Covered With Hair," "Help is on the Way," "The Trail of Your Blood in the Snow"

Benton Falls - Fighting Starlight (how is that still missing I wonder)
Will take it as a compliment my parenthesized bewilderment got incorporated as fitting part of an emo album title. People should listen to this if not known yet, for me some sort of missing link between Jawbox and Mineral or American Football with occasional screaming.

Did no one really nominate anything by Rise Against? The Sufferer and the Witness seems like it would fit. I listened to "The Good Left Undone" a decent amount that year.
Ha, it occurred to me because "All Your Friends Are Comedians" made me think a bit of a non-mersh Rise Against (not a bad thing) in an oblique way.
― My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 20 February 2017 23:08 (seven years ago) link
so painful going thru this playlist. just got up to mark mission brand scar and was like i would love to listen to this album for the 10th time this year but i must skip it bc i have like 250 albums yet to go.
― Mordy, Monday, 20 February 2017 23:09 (seven years ago) link
Although I guess the Juno album came out two years before the first Rise Against album so they would be the mersh "Comedians" if my random mental associations amounted to anything.

At the time, it felt like Thirty Ought Six were at least fairly well-known, but I feel like they're literally never mentioned anymore.
Hag Seed will be very close to the top of my ballot, I wanted to make sure to campaign for them...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UYUMJlLmz8
In high school, Sunny Day Real Estate was the most important band to me. Jeremy Enigk contributed guest vocals to the song "Tourmaline" from this album which is what led me to track it down. Like literally every album that will make my ballot, it's one of those records I rarely listen to these days, but it's one that still holds up.
Anyway, power trio with lead bass!! Fuck, I love this record so much.

Ugh, I don't know what I'm doing wrong but yt won't embed for me any more, sorry.
The songs were 'This Situationist' from 'Lula Divinia', And the title track from 'The Egg.' They're awesome, honest.
Oh yeah, City of Caterpillar's pretty good too.

Sorry I literally just sent my ballot man... City of Caterpillar made it though. Glad someone else likes Shiner too!
― ultros ultros-ghali, Saturday, 4 March 2017 17:21 (seven years ago) link
There was quite a few shiner fans on here back in the day. Its probably how I heard of them.
― Odysseus, Saturday, 4 March 2017 17:24 (seven years ago) link
ftr that Gospel album is loved by scott seward too. Whether youve voted or not you should play it. (as should anyone reading)

Did you look under the couch?
― Odysseus, Saturday, 4 March 2017 20:22 (seven years ago) link
Yeah, Gospel sound v good a few tracks in, sort of like what I hoped Mars Volta would sound like.
― My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Saturday, 4 March 2017 20:29 (seven years ago) link
I wish Mars Volta had sounded like Crime In Choir. (ex atd-i dudes who quit early and not the guys who were in the shitty band Sparta who i saw twice supporting Qotsa)
Wouldve voted Crime in Choir if they had been nommed
― Odysseus, Saturday, 4 March 2017 21:03 (seven years ago) link
I voted btw Mordy, did you get it?

Mordy, the op says Sunday but saw you say in the other thread you need it by end of day today?
― Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Saturday, 4 March 2017 23:19 (seven years ago) link
Apparently Sunday evening is enough time so that's when it'll close. Rollout on Monday. I'm thinking... 15 albums a day w/ 17 on the first day. wrap up on friday.
― Mordy, Saturday, 4 March 2017 23:27 (seven years ago) link
Not a top 300 then?
― Odysseus, Sunday, 5 March 2017 01:29 (seven years ago) link

― My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Sunday, 5 March 2017 02:26 (seven years ago) link
non ridiculous ballots should be thrown out imo
who else submitted a full 50
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Sunday, 5 March 2017 03:07 (seven years ago) link
50? I thought it was 30
― Odysseus, Sunday, 5 March 2017 03:13 (seven years ago) link
Of course Mordy's the boss, but there are no technical reasons why your ballots should only have 30 albums. 50 is fine by me.― ArchCarrier, Thursday, February 23, 2017 11:26 AM (one week ago) Bookmark Flag Post PermalinkI haven't even started to shortlist yet lol, probably gonna get six beers deep the night of, scan the noms list, and go strictly by feelsThen it's fine with me. If people who already submitted want to resubmit that's fine. Just make a note that it's a resubmission in your new ballot.― Mordy, Thursday, February 23, 2017 11:28 AM (one week ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

― husked, tonal wails (irrational), Monday, 6 March 2017 17:14 (seven years ago) link
Yeah, I had a trip come up out of the blue and didn't get a chance to compile even a shortlist, so I feel that the poll may be lacking another elderly emo voter, but such is that fate.
