Okay, so I was just listening to this Israeli Arab hip-hop group called MWR ( http://www.mwr.org ), and was wondering what other foreign language (okay, non-English speaking) hip-hop groups were worth checking out.

Okay, my bad, that link doesn't work. Don't click it, please, for the love of god!

Can't really claim to be an expert, but some I enjoyed in the charts:
French: MC Solaar, Alliance Ethnik, NTM, IAM
German: Curse, Ferris MC, Spax, Die Fantastischen Vier, Samy Deluxe, Fettes Brot
Dutch: Extince, Brainpower, Spookrijders, Osdorp Posse

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 7 November 2002 22:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

personally i find french rap plain wrong.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 7 November 2002 23:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

German: Kinderzimmer Productions, Funf Sterne Deluxe, Fettes Brot.

Portuguese (Portugal): Sam The Kid.

Portuguese (Brazil): Gabriel O Pensador, preferably the early stuff.

All of these might sound crap to you if you don't understand the language(s)- certainly my Portuguese friends weren't amused in the slightest when the version of MTV that we got on cable turned out to be a German one broadcasting tons and tons of German Hip-Hop (currently we get MTV Israel- boy, do they love their Vines and Las Ketchup. They also make odd top10 countdowns, including "best Australians" which gave me the absurd pleasure of seeing Nick Cave & The Bad Seed's "Fifteen Feet Of Pure White Snow" on MTV!)

Agree about Italian rap. The Italian language seems made for it somehow.

dj krush's code 4109 features a japanese mc or two on some of the tracks.

trying to fit all of foregin hip-hop in this one nice, small thread with only the very very famous people from a few countries is just dumb

its a start

In Japan, there's currently a glut of atrocious commercial rap, but I can recommend:

Scha Dara Parr (aka SDP) - guested on De La Soul's Buhloone Mindstate, friends with De la & the Beastie Boys. Worked with/Been remixed by Diamond D, Prince Paul, DJ Premier, Cornelius, and many others.

Tha Blue Herb - These would be the Japanese rap group DJ Krush included in the Code 4109 mix.

Cool, thanks! I've heard lots of MC Solaar, me likey.

I have a tape of some hip-hop group from Mali that raps in English (sometimes), French (sometimes), and what-sounds-like Swahili (sometimes)...anybody have a clue what these guys are called?

nickalicious, Friday, 8 November 2002 14:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

are you sure its mali and not Senegal? Could be Positive Black Soul.

Bisso Na Bisso from Congo via Paris are prety good as well. I like what i've heard by Sultana, a female Turkish MC, a snatch of one of her songs can be heard at www.meta4world.cdinfo/html

More recently I've been enjoying ojos de brujos a flamenco/hiphop group out of Barcelona. More as i think of them

H (Heruy), Friday, 8 November 2002 14:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

people actually LIKE italian and german hip hop? i mean, in my book that stuff rates pretty high on the unintentional comedy scale, but...yeesh. for what it's worth, i don't really care for the streets record, either.

i think some of that francophone african stuff is kind of cool, though.

I got this great french hip-hop comp Le Flow.

CAn't belive we haven't mentioned Saian Supa Crew. They're one of the best foreign language hiphop bands out there. Inventive beats and rhymes. Search: X Raisons.

dog latin, Saturday, 9 November 2002 12:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

Actually, if we're searching out Saian Supa Crew, the essential thing from them is there version of "The Unknown" by Mark B and Blade, which blows the original one so far out of the water it ain't even funny.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 9 November 2002 13:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dutch: Extince, Brainpower, Spookrijders, Osdorp Posse
You do mean DESTROY, right? Brainpower and Extince are just plain embarassing. Although it isn't really Hip Hop (but still has it in their mix) I would recommend Urban Dance Squad. The only worthwhile Belgian Hip Hop I can think of is Starflam.

Tystion, Tystion... da ni no...

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 9 November 2002 17:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

Urban Dance Squad

Aargh...they were abysmal. Spawned a whole generation of terrible, terrible rock/rap combos (I'm still trying to cope with the very existence of Rage Agaisnt The Machine). Though I did see Rude Boy at a Motorhead gig recently, I guess he's not all evil.

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 10 November 2002 14:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'll take UDS over Rage any day of the goddamn week. And I think Rage found their own niche on their own (because nobody else wanted it).

Finding Skriptonit's Stil oddly compelling when it gets going.

I don't hate Yung Trappa either, though i do think if you're going to call yourself Yung Trappa you probably need to have a look stronger than '15-year old Ed Byrne'.

Rap Monster (Korea) is legit good, though.

Keith Ape (also Korea) is getting more attention in the US.

I'm quite fond of Schwesta Ewa, Polish sex-worker turned German-language rapper.
