Slane Concerts Line-up Poll

This was the big outdoors music event in Ireland when I was growing up, held on the grounds of Slane Castle. It was before any of the big festivals but it was more monolithic than a festival: one stage, here's your lineup, go - looking back though it seemed to be organised along the lines of "The kids, they love... music, right?"

* The Taoiseach (head of government) asked the Minister for the Environment to fast-track some legislation to allow there to be two concerts that year.
** As a replacement for the Foo Fighters!
*** No, me either. Their wiki page moved me swiftly from I'm amazed to I'm amazed no-one's done this before: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celtic_Woman

Tempted by "Two people died while trying to swim the river to gain free access to R.E.M.'s concert in 1995" but might be swayed by " Elvis Costello and members of Spandau Ballet and U2 were the then Lord Mount Charles's guests who enjoyed smoked salmon and champagne on the day." Although "One fan threw a rock at the stage as Oasis prepared to play "Roll with It". This provoked Liam Gallagher to say, "If you don't like it, go fucking hang yourself". In 2009, this performance was described as being by "a lairy mob with attitude and half a dozen memorable songs to their credit"."

It's got to be 2001-II

"And halfway through the Moby set, Ardal O'Hanlon wandered on to the stage in his Fr. Dougal Maguire role to sing the cult Fr. Ted classic 'My Lovely Horse' for the spellbound crowd."

Thin Lizzy and Rose Tattoo also make for a nice show.

2013-I, three bands that sound fake and a band that shouldn't have been relevant for 20 years.

I was convinced that Ham SandwicH (as they are styled) were fake, there's definitely an Irish guitar band that were put together for purposes of appearing in ads, and I thought it was them - but no it was something else.

Thin Lizzy returning 30 years on to be 4th on the bill is absolutely bizarre.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 2 May 2017 09:15 (six years ago) link

not really surprising that Gorham/Downey plus some randoms wouldn't be top of the bill

Sure, I guess I mean more why bother, is it a testament to the might and majesty of Phil Lynott to appear three slots below Kings of Leon?

The Thrills?

Almost all of those bills are abominable btw.

i'd forgotten about the thrills, jesus god what a shower of shite they were

their singer always sounded like he'd just had suffered a delibilitating asthma attack before he recorded his vocals

The Thrills were last seen doing a sponsored corporate gig at a Mercedes dealership somewhere in the leafy, well-heeled heart of south Dublin.
