I prefer thrash to death and I can't honestly care about any of those other ones.

how's life, Tuesday, 2 May 2017 15:16 (six years ago) link

Grew up on thrash but black metal's diversity is what keeps me happy these days.

Still gonna vote thrash since the classic bands I grew up on and the occasional newcomer still get me going.

grindcore historically allied to progressive causes I think

imago, Tuesday, 2 May 2017 15:23 (six years ago) link

You go to the local dive bar, a few 19 year olds are banging out a really sloppy cover of "Fight Fire With Fire," you knock back a few beers and you can hang with that. When the next band comes up with a really serious original technical prog/death tune, it's time to go outside for a cigarette, and you don't even smoke.

voted thrash because it makes me want to get in fistfights the most and that seems most in keeping with the intent of the thread

thrash is the one that makes me want to get in fistfights the most too

imago, Tuesday, 2 May 2017 15:29 (six years ago) link

imo the strongest metalcore is my favorite music out of any of these subgenres but there is soooooooooo much garbage metalcore

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 15:32 (six years ago) link

and after black metal, it's the subgenre that tends toward racism most often, and it traffics in misogyny more than the rest too

Guy Pidgeotto (Tom Violence), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 15:35 (six years ago) link

Black > death. Classic 80s thrash is OK but I don't care about thrash otherwise. Fuck the Facts is the only band I like that gets classified as 'grindcore'; I mostly hate the rest. I'm not sure I get what metalcore is. Does Buried Inside count? Union of Uranus?

Thinking about it I don't really fuck with thrash, I have only 5 thrash records iirc, and I get the impression there's not much wiggle room for experimentation/genre-bending. Black metal's definitely the best by that metric (which is pretty important to me but probably not to most others)

ultros ultros-ghali, Tuesday, 2 May 2017 15:51 (six years ago) link

Thinking about it I don't really fuck with thrash, I have only 5 thrash records iirc, and I get the impression there's not much wiggle room for experimentation/genre-bending

i mean, off the top of my head, i think nocturnus invalidates this opinion

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 16:03 (six years ago) link

conversely i think black metal actually doesn't genre bend as much as i want it too (when it does i love it ofc)

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 16:04 (six years ago) link

er want it to*

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 16:06 (six years ago) link

I thought Nocturnus were death metal!

I know around that time there were lots of bands that kind of fell between the two as an evolutionary thing, though.

ultros ultros-ghali, Tuesday, 2 May 2017 16:20 (six years ago) link

i guess nocturnus exist in a subspace where thrash and death metal meet but there's a ton of thrash there

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 16:22 (six years ago) link

lol i should've read the second part of your post before writing that

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 16:22 (six years ago) link

Does Nothingface count as thrash? Vektor is cool too.

I like the washed-out guitar sounds of black metal.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 16:23 (six years ago) link

Gorguts do make a strong case for DM. DM vocalists can also get some p cool overtones happening.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 16:24 (six years ago) link

the potential for death metal to bend my mind on a purely groove-based level is why it comes out ahead for me. the popular conception is that a lot of it is identical and interchangeable, which i'd disagree with (and would further disagree that that kind of consistency has negative connotations) but even if it were there's something about the essential sound that continually draws me in, just this disgusting swerving imbalance that takes incredible technical ability and an unusually fluid interplay to even accomplish. i love it so much

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 16:35 (six years ago) link

Yeah I never really got death metal for years, now I can't get enough of it, and you've probably nailed a pretty big reason why.

ultros ultros-ghali, Tuesday, 2 May 2017 16:39 (six years ago) link

I never would've been able to explain it like that though

as far as amount of interesting stuff to be found aka variation within genre, I'd go with:

death > black > thrash > grind > don't listen to enough metalcore to know, but I suspsect I'd put it last anyway

Dominique, Tuesday, 2 May 2017 17:32 (six years ago) link

Black probably, then a tie between thrash and Grind. I like some death and very little metalcore.

By "metalcore" are people thinking of Botch, Bloodlet etc or Killswitch Engage and stuff?

ultros ultros-ghali, Tuesday, 2 May 2017 17:44 (six years ago) link

the genre contains both

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 17:54 (six years ago) link

when i said upthread that i like good metalcore the most out of any of these genres, i was def thinking of botch, converge, etc.

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 17:56 (six years ago) link

death metal - better musicians, better composition, better repeat value

on the thrash tip, I really love the good old heavy progressive thrash bands (Sadist, Voivod) but most thrash records exhaust themselves by the third or fourth track for me otherwise.

The Locust was kinda grind/screamo xover, iirc

Guy Pidgeotto (Tom Violence), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 18:14 (six years ago) link

Right now I favour black metal for the atmosphere and beauty but I haven't listened to enough death metal beyond Death, Carcass, Morbid Angel, Athiest, Cynic and Anata. I'm put off by a lot of the vocalists and conventions but I hope/suspect there's a lot more interesting variety out there.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 2 May 2017 18:15 (six years ago) link

i thought botch were post-hardcore

i like the last botch ep

almost want to be challopsy and write-in vote for power metal, which is frequently awful but is also frequently fun

increasingly bonkers (rushomancy), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 18:18 (six years ago) link

For me it's death > grind > metalcore (which includes deathcore 'cause I love Attila and Emmure) > thrash (mostly old stuff; new bands like Warbringer, Toxic Holocaust, et al. do nothing for me). I delete black metal promos unheard.

1. Black Metal - Love lots of it from the '90s onwards, still producing cool and surprising music
2. Thrash - There's some classic stuff there but not a fan of anything past the '80s really
3. Metalcore - Not big into it but I've got time for Botch and Converge
4. Death Metal - Some bands I like in small doses, not keen on the vocals though plus it's all a bit too... knotty
5. Grindcore - Not for me at all

i don't really get black metal..

haven't heard much grindcore apart from some napalm death. eh.

metalcore... is converge metalcore? that band rules

oh and thrash. thrash is good.

brimstead, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 00:14 (six years ago) link

metalcore is Converge and a bunch of shitty Converge ripoffs, correct me if I'm wrong

Guy Pidgeotto (Tom Violence), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 01:08 (six years ago) link

grindcore because it's over the quickest.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 01:10 (six years ago) link

Death metal, then black, then probably a tie between grind and thrash. Not sure I know what metalcore is, but if it's stuff like Kvelertak, count me in.

o. nate, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 02:58 (six years ago) link

Attila and Emmure

I honestly thought "metalcore" mostly referred to stuff like this. Converge are not bad (but this still wouldn't change my answer).

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 03:21 (six years ago) link

Grind is also the closest to other genres I enjoy like free jazz, punk rock and noize

Oh hm, are you thinking of Painkiller as a grind offshoot/fusion?

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 04:10 (six years ago) link

sure

Jay Elettronica Viva (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 04:35 (six years ago) link

Metalcore is a relatively big tent if you include subgenres like Deathcore (Emmure, Attila, After The Burial, Slice The Cake, Whitechapel, etc) and Mathcore (Botch, Dillinger Escape Plan, etc).

Siegbran, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 11:26 (six years ago) link

other than the earliest DEP, and at least a respect for bands like Car Bomb and Psyopus, I find a lot of mathcore to be a bit on the spastic side for me (which is probably the point). What about stuff like Naked City? Probably too conceptual and self-conscious. anyway, I can handle straight crust/hardcore/powerviolence, but when they try to metal up their sound, I find myself wanting better riffs/coherent songs. but I can be schooled!

Dominique, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 14:48 (six years ago) link

Hot takes: Dillinger Escape Plan is hardcore, Naked City is jazz
