Where is the love for THE MEMBRANES?

they did some cool stuff! i don't think anyone listens to them anymore. i even like their weird industrial remixes that would be on later 12-inches. i'm listening to the 1986 German comp/album Giant right now (which is weirdly a mostly re-recorded version of their second album from 1985?) and it is proof that fun post-punk didn't entirely die in 1984. also, did they invent the grebo look? also, i don't care if they still put out albums. they probably do. who doesn't? "king cotton whiplash" is a really cool song. someone should cover it.

i was listening to Brix Smith on the Grew up a Punk podcast and she talked about John Robb in glowing tones

john robb is kind of energetically omnipresent in UK musicwriter world (also he's a nice man!)

Met him a few times when I was a gig-going student in Manchester - a nice guy indeed. Never totally enjoyed any of their albums, but they did have a few solid tunes - Roaring bull in Victorian England is one that springs to mind

That tune in my head now sounds like a cross between the fall and the volcano suns - northern ranting meets this sort of rolling storm of rumbling noise. Dunno if that's an accurate for their whole back catalogue tho

squarely in the "you must have had to have been there to appreciate them" category for me, idgi

I saw them playing in the bandstand in Stanley Park in Blackpool when I was on holiday with my parents, must have been 1981 or 82? It was a free concert, just stumbled across it, I don't remember if my parents were actually with me, I think my brother might have been. A couple of guys from A Certain Ratio were in the audience. I mentioned it to John Robb when I was talking to him after some punk commemoration thing or other.

THere's a new box set either just out or imminently due that has most of the 80s stuff on. Assumed that would be why there was a thread starting.

Have always loved Spike Milligan's Tape Recorder and its b-side All Skin & Bone and the cover of Voodoo Chile.

I stayed at the John Robb house sometime in '88 after a gig, not sure who by. Think I could have been there for the Dinosaur Jr video that was shown on Snub too but wanted to be elsewhere for some reason.
