ah, but I haven't heard aesop rock. Truth be told, I don't much like any hip-hop (with some exceptions, of course), much less understand/subscribe to the whole "bling bling vs. undie" debate 'round here.

Doo-doo? More like space doo-doo pistols. Great jazz-inflected minimalist beats. The "wall of words" approach takes a little getting used to, but the words do have an internal logic, as convoluted as it may be at times. The Appleseed EP and Labor Days are best, though there are many fine moments on Float as well.

His voice took some getting used to, but I like it a lot now. Labor Days is hot, the beats are funky. I think those beats suit him better than El-P's, but his cameo on Fan. Damage and the track on the Urban Renewal comp (that ending is hilarious!) are cool nonetheless.

And why wouldn't you think of it as hip-hop, Steve?

um... "labor days" i didn't care for as much as "float"... but "float" is the shit... witness "basic cable"... so is "music For earthworms". "shere khan" has r&b, sped up cock rock samples, ennio morricone, and other classics (is that "peter and the wolf" i hear?) lyrics are a bit more heady than your average street diggy, but whateva!

aesop's best when he's crate diggin.... cause it makes good on both ends.

but yeah...i was still a little disappointed with "labor days"

The production on Float as a whole leaves a little something to be desired, especially the drum sound, which is artificial and grating. Soundwise, I prefer the murky jazz samples of Appleseed or the laid-back eclecticism of Labor Days. But "Big Bang" is awesome.

Aesop Rock is the ultimate only-get-it-if-you-pay-close-attention emcee, and by "getting it" I don't exactly mean decoding some insightful life analysis, but simply picking up his vibe. After going through all of Labor Days there wasn't much I remembered, maybe the clumsy worker's anthem chorus and the track about the artist girl. Float got the message across more frequently, I agree w/ msp on "Basic Cable" but I also agree w/ o.nate on the production on that album which is rather flimsy. Last stuff I heard (Urban Renewal track, Mr. Lif chorus) I wasn't feeling at all, really.
