is count grishnack the heir of drop-out rock tradition(roky 13th, tiny tim) or he`s a conceptual artist paying the bill for his, a bit too violent indeed, performance on teenage angst, identity politics and music market?

closer to the latter than the former - he's boyd rice, more or less, only with occasionally interesting music & the balls/brainlessless to actually embrace ideas of "racial purity" instead of doing cloying little pseudointellectual dances with 'em

So every time I roll by the metal section of my favorite local shop there's always an abundance of sealed Burzum. I haven't picked one up yet because I don't know where to start. Suggestions?

You know what? Just download these tracks(one from each album) and you'll realize that you need them all.

I have Filosofem on my iPod, and one of the tracks (not the long-ass instrumental, but maybe the one before that) has some digital damage so it starts clicking and skipping about 1/3 of the way in, Oval-style, and it sounds really fucking cool, so much so that I think I'd be disappointed if I heard the track without.

burzum is a little bit of a scary concept to dive into. i mean, i'll happily listen to 'hvis lyset tar oss' most of the way through and dig it, but i kind of get the impression that there's no middleground with this act - you either love it on some obsessive level or you dismiss it totally. to passively like it seems a little bit strange, but i really don't want to explore it on any deep level for fear of absently accepting the horrible ethics.

here is a repost from someone on DFFD

In a longer feature interview with the norwegian newspaper Dagbladet Varg Vikernes says he is working on a new Burzum album. It will be metal he says. He is hoping to release in the beginning of the new year. He has 9 songs finished. He says there are several labels showing interest in releasing it.

Further he says he wants to spend a lot of time on the album so it turns out the way he wants it, and the fans can expect real Burzum.

It is a very long article, and he talks about lots of other things beside music. There are also some quotes from his biography which he plans to get published. The article is in norwegian and not online yet. But it might come online on http://www.db.no after a while. It usually is.

three months pass...

Varg Vikernes (a.k.a. Count Grishnackh), the BURZUM mastermind who was convicted of murdering MAYHEM guitarist Oystein Aarseth (a.k.a. Euronymous) in August 1993 and setting fire to three churches, has issued the following update:

"As you might already know, my dear ladies and gentlemen, and others individuals too, I am no friend of the modern so-called black metal culture. It is a tasteless, low-brow parody of Norwegian so-called black metal anno 1991-1992, and if it was up to me, it would meet its dishonourable end as soon as possible. However, rather than abandon my own music, only because others have soiled its name by claiming to have something in common with it, I will stick to it. The 'black metallers' will probably continue to 'get loaded,' 'get high,' and in all other manners too behave like the stereotypical Negro; they will probably continue to get foreign tribal tattoos, dress, walk, talk, look and act like homosexuals, and so forth. Some of the 'black metallers,' their fans and accomplices will probably even continue to pretend — and actually believe — they have something in common with BURZUM, but let me assure you; they don't! I play what can be described as some sort of metal music, all right, and they do too, but the similarities ends there. Freud wrote books. Tolkien wrote books. The similarities ends there.

"Why more of BURZUM? Well, I am what I am; a musician. Musicians produce music, when they can, and now I can; I am no longer imprisoned by the criminal anti-Norwegian regime in Norway. Will my music be any good? My guess is that if you like BURZUM you like BURZUM. If you don't, you don't. I do try to change all the time, but most of the time I fail, and many appreciate that. Others don't.

"The coming album is called 'Den Hvite Guden' (The White God) and is a musical and lyrical description of the the White God (alias Apollon, Baldr, Belenus, Belus, Bragi, Byelobog, Jarilo, et cetera) and the annual events of his life. I describe the stories of the myths like they could have been before they were myths, by presenting to you bits and pieces of the sorcery and religion of ancient Europe (more elaborately described in my unpublished book 'Trolldom og Religion i Oldtidens Skandinavia' [Sorcery and Religion in Ancient Scandinavia]). It is not intended for play the 'low-brow metal' style, but instead I imagine a listener willing to sit down, ideally in solitude, and think for a minute, about the White God and our forebears, whether they were Picto-British, Finnish, Gallic, Greek, Roman, Scandinavian, Scytho-Slavic, Daco-Thrakian or whatever, and about their magnificent, intelligent, positive, beautiful, healthy and strong culture. I try to help you create an image of this with the help of your own mind, by offering a few clues and guidelines. The album is political only in the way that it offers an alternative to the depravity offered to us by the intrusive popular culture and the commercial entertainment industry — and by modern so-called black metal, for that sake.

"The début album was intentionally anti-commercial and anti-death metal, the 'Det Som Engang Var' album was experimental, the 'Hvis Lyset Tar Oss' album was intentionally monotonous and ritual, the 'Filosofem' album was intentionally different from the others, 'Dauði Baldrs' was what I could do from a prison cell, and 'Hliðskjálf' too, but they were all music that I liked. 'Den Hvite Guden' will be no different in that respect, but I am older now, in fact twice as old as I was when I recorded the début album, and I am therefore different. The new album might differ from the old albums more than some might appreciate, but I hope not. Even if some of you might appreciate the old BURZUM, I must be allowed to evolve, just like everybody else. Maybe you will like the new BURZUM too. I will not do my best to copy and reproduce my old music, just to please somebody. I never did and I never will. If it sounds similar it is because it is made by the same person. If it sounds different it is because it is not the same music and because I have evolved.

"I can add that just like on the other metal albums (with the exception of 'Hvis Lyset Tar Oss'), 'Den Hvite Guden' features some very old BURZUM tracks. 'Filosofem' featured the 'Burzum' track, from 1991, and 'Den Hvite Guden' will feature the 'Uruk-Hai' track, from 1988-1989, although the title and the lyrics have been changed to fit the new concept. It will also feature the original 'Dauði Baldrs' metal track, from 1993. In a sense this album too will not be 'new material,' but just a collection of previously unpublished tracks; some new, some old. If some think my composing skills have disappeared altogether, then at least there will be some gems for them too.

"You can expect to see 'The White God' around March-April (anno 2010), when he traditionally returns from the hidden world of shadows."

If Slayer didn't look fucking evil and shocked the world with Mengele lyrics, or Lemmy didn't look like such as badass, or Venom didn't have the most rediculously satanic lyrics, or Iron Maiden didn't have Eddie none of them would have made it far out of their garages either. But they did, and Burzum is now one of the most infuential metal artists of the last twenty years. Look at ILM top 100, nearly everything there that is not built on pre-90s metal has a bit of Varg in it. So yeah, totally overrated.

Is he considered more influential musically than Darkthrone and other first wave BM bands?

Inevitable stupid dubstep mix (chap), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 03:06 (thirteen years ago) link

First wave is 80s Hellhammer/Celtic Frost/Sodom/Bathory and but I don't think it's in any way controversial to consider Vikernes the major musical innovater of the "big 4" that were shaping the BM revival circa 90/91. In those days Darkthrone was 50% Celtic Frost/50% Bathory (just listen to A Blaze...), Immortal 100% Bathory worship and Mayhem had only just stopped being a Venom/Sodom clone. When the S/T came out nobody else was doing the combination of ambient soundscapes, hypnotic 10+ minute songs with one riff/motif or those typical open sting chords and arpeggios. Burzum was one of the first metal bands to succesfully focus on atmospherics and textures exclusively, and had nothing in common with the "riff salad" songwriting style in contemporary death/thrash/black. I think it's fair to consider Darkthrone, Mayhem and Immortal as reviving and building on the heritage of the first wave BM, and Burzum as changing it into something completely new altogether.

The only band with a comparable musical influence on BM was Mayhem (also those hypnotic 'nordic' riffs coupled with *very* fast playing) but even there Varg played on their debut. It's also no coincidence that Varg was asked to do the lyrics for Transilvanian Hunger, the point where Darkthrone went truly minimalist, and again on their most Burzumesque song, "Quintessence".

The Burzums was the musical project by Charlie "Varg" Vikernes. It began during 1961 in Bergen, California and quickly became prominent within the early Californian surf scene. During 1962 and 1963, The Burzums recorded four albums; however, in 1964 Vikernes was convicted and imprisoned for using cuss words in public to describe guitarist Øystein "Euronymous" Aarseth, and the mild intimidation of the congregations of several milk bars and several churches. While imprisoned, Vikernes recorded two really poor albums in the dark ambient surf style.

Dunkelheit first featured on the Burzums' legendary surf LP Filosofem (literally "Surf's Up" in English) recorded on a low budget in the back of a surf shop in Bergen, California using an Edison Phonograph, the cheapest instruments available to Varg and other awesome gadgets to get that famously warm Trve Kvlt sound of sand, sun and surf.

Having just started dipping into black metal earlier this year, the first band that really yanked me to attention was Darkthrone... Several on this board gently suggested to seek out the works of Varg, so I've started. So far all I've picked up is Det Som Engang Var, but I've got Filosofem on the way and I'm really curious about the two keyboard records. Det Som Engang Var is WAY different than I was expecting--there's a real, I don't know how exactly to say it, clarity of expression underlying the whole thing. I guess I was expecting more of that Darkthrone-y wash and rush, but this is pretty stately stuff. ("Key to the Gate" actually reminds me of Slint!) I have to admit, I was somewhat skeptical of the "dude's a scumbag but some of the stuff is undeniably great" line, but I'll be damned if the shit doesn't grab you. Sorry, mom.
