Find me some funk. Nasty funk.

I dont think Ive looked hard enough, but I cannot find funk music, out side of George Clintons many groups. Ive found proto-funk like Sly and the Family Stone and James Brown, and funky music like Prince, but no straight up, pure, funk. I mean, I love Parliament, love Funkadelic, love P Funk All Stars, but I want more.

Betty Davis' first three albums
Graham Central Station's first four albums
Ohio Players' "Pleasure", "Pain", and "Skintight" albums
Kool and the Gang's first four albums

... there's quite a bit more, although I'm perplexed by your not considering James Brown "straight up, pure" funk. Have you heard "The Payback" lp? "Revolution of the Mind"? "Hot Pants"?

Ohio Players. Rufus. War. The Car Wash soundtrack, by Norman Whitfield and Rose Royce. Some early Commodores. Isaac Hayes. Jorge Ben, Trio Mocoto, the Samba Soul 70 and Black Rio comp albums (these all from Brazil). Labelle. Michael Viner's Bongo Band. Rick James, up until the whole Mary Jane Girls thing. The Chi-Lites (even their slow jams were pure funk). Lord have mercy I'm sorry I have a job I'd spend all day on this thread.

Those Soul Jazz "New Orleans Funk" compilations'll make you shake, I guarantee.

the meters, search: cissy strut, simple song, cardova, here comes the meter man, sophisticated cissy, ease back, and chicken strut.

Fishbone. Not exactly 'pure' funk (more like gospel-punk-metal-funk-rock-everything), but one of the funkiest bands around. Some songs such as "Are U Wit It?", "Bonin' In the Boneyard" & "Lemon Merengue" are about as funky as anything of the past 10 years.

The Meters is a great call. They have never done anything not funky.

I would also highly recommend Herbie Hancock & the Headhunters, which sho' nuff is jazz-funk, but it's about the funkiest jazz-funk that's ever been. Try the song "Chameleon", it's a booty-shakin' classic.

And I would also recommend any of the Stanley Clarke/George Duke colabs, I can't recall any names right now, but FUNKY AS F()CK!!

The Meters are always good, check out their song "Hey Pocky A Way" in addition to the others that have been suggested. Also, It's Your Thang by the Isley Brothers. Kool and the Gang's "Kool's Back Again" and "The Gang's Back Again."

Also, Ohio Players "Fopp"

OHIO PLAYERS OHIO PLAYERS OHIO PLAYERS (in addition to the above suggestions, Fire and Honey, or just get the best-of comp Gold). Also Wild Cherry's self-titled album, if only because it contains "Play That Funky Music".

Er, I see tinobeat already tipped the Soul Jazz NO discs. I'll take this chance to mention the French site, funkfoodfamily.com, which covers all your funky lifestyle needs.

Have you explored Go-Go yet? I fucking love it. Check out TroubleFunk, Rare Essence, and all that Chuck Brown shizznit. Come to DC, there are clubs that have kickass GoGo acts as house bands and play a few times a week.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Thursday, 5 December 2002 01:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

there's a "Pure Funk" series with lots of hits (available on amazon) that is VERY well-compiled (Gap Band, Dazz Band, Rick James, this kind of thing)... and then if you wanna get deep, the Rhino Records Phat Trax series is unbelievable.

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 5 December 2002 10:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

That first Pure Funk compilation might be more pop than nasty, but it's so damn exhilirating everybody should have it. It has killer sound. I've seen it in many a used bin. I was less than thrilled by Rhino's In Yo Face! History of Funk series. I found the sequencing and song selections a bit unimaginative.

Curt (cgould), Thursday, 5 December 2002 15:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hang your heads in shame! Right up there with George Clinton and James Brown, but no one has mentioned the magnificent Dyke & The Blazers, maybe the funkiest band of all time! There's a good comp called Funky Broadway (actually there's more than one comp called that, but they're all great).

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 5 December 2002 21:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

B-b-but I mentioned them in this earlier funk thread, Martin.

Curt (cgould), Thursday, 5 December 2002 23:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Fair enough, Curt: you are excused from hanging your head in shame. I say this grudgingly, as I regard them as one of those acts that should be mentioned as frequently as possible.

let's not be to stupid. Chic's le freak, Rick James' Give it to me baby, sam and dave's hold on im comin, Rufus Thomas' Get up off athat funk, Earth, wind and Fire's september and Bootsy Collins' In Funk We trust are all really good "pure funk", crazy, funktastic songs. look for the albums, support these funk-stars and dont download their music. If you download their music you are a turd.

FMD, Thursday, 26 May 2005 00:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Did I really just read this whole thread without ever detecting the words "Stevie Wonder's 70s albums"?

I know they're sufficiently funky - are they insufficiently nasty?

Some early Commodores

I cannot second this enough. When Lionel Ritchie held a sax, and the band was all over the moogs and bass, shit was the phonk!

A very easy primer on funk is to find those "Paul's Boutique's Crates" that people have made on slsk...which is ironic, because if you look closely at the cover of Paul's Boutique, you'll see that the store was actiually selling a Young Marble Ginats album. Well, that and Grover Washington Jr.'s Mr. Magic.
