Braid: c/d?

Braid is probably the band most representative of the whole 90's emo thing. They're less poppy than, say, the Get Up Kids and have an enormous amount of in print material. I think they're one of the best of these sort of bands, yet a bit overexposed. As Pitchfork reported, Braid has more posthumous material released than the Pixies have.

Dud. If I wanted to listen to Jawbox, I'd listen to Jawbox.

hstencil, Thursday, 12 December 2002 14:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

Highly underrated. People who wouldn't give Braid the time of day when they were together are giving obviously Braid-influenced bands like Pretty Girls Make Graves or Hot Hot Heat rave reviews. I don't think anybody was better at the hardcore/pop-punk blend that defined third-wave emo. Frame & Canvas might be the only album you need from that scene.

Hey Mercedes, on the other hand, are a monstrous Dud.

Dean Roberts, Thursday, 12 December 2002 14:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

Pretty Girls and HHH are Braid-influenced? Wuh?

One classic thing about Braid: All the indie girls love to groove to "Dozen Roses," which is a great pop song.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

"This Town" = "First Day Back" (practically)

Don't know the PGMG album as well, but every time I hear it it strikes me as Braid w/ Girl Singer.

Dean Roberts, Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

Braid didn't have half of the energy that PGMG has, nor the adventurousness...

I don't know either of the songs you cite for Braid = HHH, but HHH is awful, awful new-wave-tinged power pop. I can't think of a duller record I've heard all year. The critical and fan support baffles me. I trashed it when I reviewed it, and I couldn't believe that the editor assigned such a piece of shit record to me... Lo and behold a month later every other glossy's writing about and jizzing all over it. Oh well.

A big reason why Braid is a dud: Their drummer owes one of my best friends $500. My friend booked them to play our college a few years ago. The administration had not cut the check for the band in time, so they were going to mail it to them. Braid pitched a fit, so my friend, being the nice guy that he is, agreed to cut them a check personally, and then the band would be required to sign the school's check over to him, once they received it. The assholes instead decided to pocket both checks and they've ignored his phone calls for the past three years. I think he should sue, but he says it's not worth it.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

PGMG and Braid share the same kind of "let's play a whole lot of notes and make a bunch of stop-start meter changes" post-hardcore sound, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that one influenced the other. And Hot Hot Heat shouldn't even be mentioned in this thread; if anything, they're an offshoot of San Diego Spock-rock, not Midwestern emo.

That said: Frame And Canvas = Classic, everything else is neither here nor there. Hey Mercedes = Dud so far, except for "Bells", which = Classic.

Nick Mirov (nick), Friday, 13 December 2002 05:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

No Knife is the best at anything that approximates this general pop rock guitar genre. I've yet to listen to any similar record that trumps "Fire in the City of Automatons". Hey, thread idea.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 13 December 2002 06:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

Apparently I'm the only person here, but I like The Age of Octeen more than any other Braid release I've heard, incl. Frame & Canvas. You can't fuck with songs like "The Chandelier Swing", "American Typewriter", and "My Baby Smokes." Just amazing pop songs, and Braid have v. good lyrics. But I like word play, so maybe some other people find them utterly inane.

I also definitely see the PGMG/Braid comparisons, except that Pretty Girls... really suck. They embodied the whole "irritating scenester with dyed black hair and a Fugazi patch" thing for me when I saw them live. Three of the people I was with hated them so much that they left before Les Savy Fav came on.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 13 December 2002 22:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'd leave before Les Savy Fav came on, too. Ugh.

hstencil, Friday, 13 December 2002 22:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'd leave before Les Savy Fav came on, too. Ugh.

Have you ever seen them live? They put on an amazing show even though their records are piss poor. The singer's just a ridiculously crazy motherfucker; last time (the show with PGMG) he jumped up on the bar, spilled beer on all the middle-aged businessmen and broke the lamps hanging above. Worth seeing. (Also, their music actually has energy live.)

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 13 December 2002 22:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

yes I have, and no they're still pretty awful no matter what antics that guy pulls. Nobody paid any attention to them when that guy didn't do that, btw.

At least they're less boring than Braid.

I've just gotten into Frame and Canvas recently. What other albums would you guys recommend in that vain (note: I LOVE Cap'n Jazz's anthology/collection)?

Keep in mind that I hate "emo," or what it has evolved into. I do love that midwest 90s Jawbox/Fugazi "emo" sound though.

So the new EP is decent-ish. Not great, but I wasn't really expecting them to blow me away in 2011 anyway. The first track is easily the worse of the bunch though, definitely Hey Mercedes-lite. Gets better as it goes along though, and certainly not worth the dismissive 2.6 from Pitchfork.

I like it. Not blown away, but feel like it's a picking up point from where they left off but taking into account the 15 years inbetween.

so far nothing's grabbing me as hard as "universe or worse" from the 2011 EP but ice had it on repeat for 2 days and it's def growing

"doing yourself in" has some great drumming and the line "she's got stars in her eyes/ for me and some other guys"

adam, Monday, 4 August 2014 19:25 (nine years ago) link

I wasn't sold on this during the first half, Chris Broach's songs especially were bugging me - his new(ish) singing style makes some of the cornier lyrics pop out more than ever. But good fucking god damn, at the pairing of "Put Some Wings On That Kid" and "Lux" I was sold. This album rules. Makes me super nostalgiac for the years when I'd get to see them play all over Champaign and be able to go buy records from Bob Nanna at Record Service.
