a friend of mine has most of their vinyl releases -- including the one that comes packaged in a pizza box with gig flyers (for completely different bands i should add) broken toys and miscellaneous junk. there's another one in a fake parchment sleeve that has the most hilarious liner notes i've ever read.

For me, Caroliner records function mainly as elaborately packaged dust traps, but descriptions of their live shows intrigue me. After all, I like to watch fauvist frontier fever visions beating on black lit buckets and banjos as much as the next guy.
If you've encountered the legendary Caroliner in the wild, please share your stories here. Was it fun, or was it just a big headache? Did you relish the experience, or did you wish you'd just stayed home and watched "Little House on the Prarie" reruns?

it takes them 5 hours to set up before each gig
I would NOT miss the Caroliner gig with Wolf Eyes - i'm gonna be in Chicago, and staying an extra day just to be there - two great live bands on the same bill
I have a video of them - it's like Meet The Feebles on acid
and all of their records are great - pretty much indistinguishable from each other, but great!

i'd say live pretty much as classic as they come, on record... hmmm, ehhhh...
brandan kearney was just a sideman in the band, people like jack cole seem to stress his importance (to quote brandan himself here):
MP: You've explained that Caroliner was really Grux's baby, as far as the songwriting and image and whatnot. What role did you play in the band? How do the non-Kearney records compare to the Kearney-era records?
BK:I feel bad even discussing this, really. The band was supposed to exist without personalities, and I still respect that to an extent, even though it was always kind of an open secret. As far as comparisons, I think people have given me way too much credit, because if you look at the first record, or "Rings on the Awkward Shadow," they're great, and I had absolutely nothing to do with them. I think if I'd never joined they still would have made good records...maybe even better ones. But my specific role had mainly to do with recording and arranging things...production, I guess you'd call it. I didn't write the songs, and I often played within the confines of what Grux wanted to hear...on record, at least. Getting away from the band itself, I'd say that of the things I've done, the Caroliner records are probably what I'm happiest with, artistically. But was the band qualitatively better with me than without me? I don't think you could necessarily say that.
i'd say dame darcy's days with caroliner are almost as important as brandan's.
live, the first experiences i had (chameleon and purple onion, summer 94) were visually the sheer flourescence drawn forth from black light projection; musically, the 100 year old folk songs as covered by future-pioneer renegades speaking in antiquated diction... the noise was fun squallor and scrape, a very mysterious band ranging and connecting out from Grux, Brandan, Dame Darcy, Bill Bowman, Gregg Turkington, Trey Spruance... a very deep roster of eccentricity.
The parallel universe is still very active... see msp's mention of Hans GruXel's Krankenkabinett, also the one-off CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR GRAY DAVIS which opened for Ex-Girl (Japan) and TFUL282 a couple summers ago at the GAMH... which was like Hans Grusel times 20.

As for the Kearney interview, Kearney is very modest, undercutting himself.
Certainly all the players were all important at one point or another -- I just like the one's Kearney was involved with more, a whiff of structure and additive X. Many of Grux's post-Caroliner projects just don't strike the proverbial chord, though I suppose it's not post-Caroliner anymore what with the reformation.

angst hase pfeffer nase... that's one guy, i think. i remember reading an interview with him in bananafish a while back but i don't remember any of the actual content. great album on menlo park, a couple of EPs...

i was confusing angst hase pfeffer nase with the Commode Minstrels or whetever they're called - I don't think AHPN is a Caroliner-affiliated project - in fact if i remember right, it may be the Deerhoof guy...

Yeah, AFCGT cdr is good, though not exactly great. More "interesting": basically formless studio jams, though the superpsychedelic last track is killer. More than anything else, it makes me curious about what come next.
