Who the fuck are they and why are they allowed? And why are they aloud?! UERGH!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 19 January 2003 10:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

Among the many things to loathe about Busted, the one that gets my goat the most is the excruciating way they resort to imitating the intonation and enunciation of American pop-poonk bands like Green Day etc: "I've been to the year three thou-sEnd - not much has changed but they lEve underWAHDeRR" etc. When GD and co do it it's alright, but a bunch of public school chancers from Britain ...

Darren, Sunday, 19 January 2003 12:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

But they're wacky! Look at them cut interviews in J17 about such wacky things as, I dunno, how they like mackerel. And look how counter-revolutionary they are: they hate boy bands. Oooooh, I wouldn't want to be Brian Westlife at the moment, them Busted lads have me smacked down good and proper.

Quite obviously the nadir of popular music as we know it. And, it's worth pointing out again, THEY'RE THE FUCKING DUM DUMS.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 19 January 2003 13:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

Don't dis the best and most vital band to emerge since the Velvets, with a exemplary 3-piece dynamic not heard since the heyday of Nirvana.

Every now and again a song comes along that defines, either politically or socially, the zeitgiest of a specific time and place in history. One thinks of "Anarchy in the UK" (another punk song), "Fuck tha Police" or the defining record of the flower power generation, "Russians" by Sting.

"Year 3000" is such a record. In these troubled times of treaty withdrawls, sabre rattling and Pete Townshend, no one single piece of audio says all that needs to be said, and says it well.

"I've been to the year three thousand
Not much has changed but they lived under water"

Think about that. Think long and hard about the world and think too of those sweet words of truth. In these days of meaningless, meaningless pap being passed off as pop lyrics, think of "That's What I Go To School For". Think about how pro-active that statement is. These plucky geniuses care not for gunz, hos, and "Solid Crews", these boys are visionaries, like Martin Luther King or Ronald Reagan. They stand atop their chosen platform and deliver truth after life changing truth. Can this be said of modern bands such as Blur or the Kinks?

In short, Busted stand alone as the pinnacle of what music has been and could ever be. They can express more with 3 chords and a distortion pedal than the entire works of Mozart and Bach ever did. And they were pretty OK. They eschew the bland conformity of having a drummer and head out into uncharted territories of aural excellence without fear or favour. No drummer. Incredible stuff. Headset mics. Unbelievable.

I urge anyone alive or dead to burn your Sade cassettes, your Demonic House and your "Noise Metal" and convert to the church of Busted. Am I being literal? YES! They are Gods that walk the earth, men amongst men, the absolute and perfect conclusion of all that is true and good in the world. Including cartoons.

VIVA BUSTED! VIVA THE NEW FLESH! ALL HAIL BUSTED! ALL HAIL OUR NEW POWERCHORD MASTERS! BOW DOWN BEFORE BUSTED YET YE PERISH IN THE FIREY VAULTS! CONVERT, SINNER! CONVERT!

geeta, Sunday, 19 January 2003 13:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

They DON'T PLAY THEIR OWN INSTRUMENTS!!! (Obviously, you don't know that this isn't a rockist anti-Busted argument but a pro-Busted argument unless you know its based on how ludicrous they are jumping about with their instruments strapped on, axe-kicking the air like its the year 3000.) I worked with a girl who is the cousin of the manager of Busted.

I like them even more now I know that they're English public school poshos rather than angst ridden, blue collar Yank white trash. Not that there's anything wrong with ARBCYWT but one must have standards or where else would we be.

Plus the good looking one looks like a young Dermot Morgan which brings back fond memories of Father Ted.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 19 January 2003 15:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

Are they actually a UK band? That's one of the funniest things I've heard in a while! Jim Reid's Americanisms are far more fun.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 19 January 2003 15:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

My favourite's the little rodenty Pete Shelley one that does all the little cheeky winks to the camera. He's dreamy.

Ferg (Ferg), Sunday, 19 January 2003 17:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

Their stuff goes for silly prices on ebay. I sold a promo of "That's What I Go To School For" that was packaged like a school notebook, with skull n' crossbones grafitti, lines and everything!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Sunday, 19 January 2003 17:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

The video shows the group travelling forward in time where they meet their future selves - still playing, still Busted, but old (well, middle aged by the look of it) men. And it's supposed to be the year 3000! Holy shit, Busted's thousand year Reich!

I don't mind the others but the dopey, lanky streak of piss is dating Hiedi Sugababe. That's enough for me to hate them.

DavidM (DavidM), Sunday, 19 January 2003 18:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

What I don't get is the lyric -

"we went to the year three thousand / everyone bought our seventh album"

Now, I think The Stone Roses, Massive Attack, Elestica and Mark Hollis have got pretty respectable levels of insouciance when it comes to BIIIIIIG gaps between albums, but

Whoever wrote this clearly wanted it to be about the year 2050 but realised that wasn't very catchy at all.

Ferg (Ferg), Sunday, 19 January 2003 19:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes, but all the woman have three breasts so it's no surprise that making their all important 6th album takes a back seat.

And now a word from our sponsors:
'B-b-but to care about such things is to NOT GET IT - pop stars are like actors (ie fake actors) and thus it makes perfect sense for them to create personas and false cultural backgrounds (as long as they're only acting the goat, obv)
It's all part of the fun - you don't hate fun, do you?
What? YOU DO?'

They obv don't pull on their sleeves when they cry and that's why they only managed #2 this week.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 20 January 2003 13:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

Busted have taken me a bit by surprise - don't think there's anything inherently wrong in what they do, it's all down to the quality of the ideas/songs/good lines, "Year 3000" is bad although nowhere near as bad as D.Sneddon - the chart rundown yesterday was the first time I'd heard him, and the first time I'd heard anything off the recent Flaming Lips album, and both of them genuinely shocked me with how poor they were. The Sneddon tune in particular is grotesquely bad - Del Amitri songwriting with Westlife production, ugh ugh ugh.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 20 January 2003 14:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

They're Busted! They are the wandering soulpoets of Generation Ringtones! The only people in this flapping swadgasm we call "the pop scene" to dare to speak the truth and rock out unabashed on a tide of screaming aural ecstacy.

Busted are fucking ace! They're hysterical! I love them!

It just shows the depths of sexism on this board that people are willing to take the Sugababes seriously - on this very thread - for being punk bubblegum, yet Busted are reviled for being bubblegum punk.

ash, Sunday, 28 March 2004 16:23 (twenty years ago) link

i've noticed that young girls ALWAYS finish their reasonably argued case for a much-maligned boyband by throwing in that comment that one of them is 'well sexy' or similar. it happens on things like Big Brother as well (the SMS message on screen ticket-tape sorta thing) on TV. it's interesting* that it's always presented as the afterthought, the less important point - or the conclusion that has more gravitas than anthing else outlined beforehand...

Super-Kate (kate), Sunday, 28 March 2004 17:57 (twenty years ago) link

Actually, this thread reminded me about my whole rant about that "protools" logic upthread being TOTALLY WRONG, but that's probably for another thread...

Yes, "ProTools" does not equal processing, but ProTools ENABLES processing and cutting and pasting and other digital manipulation on a scale that no other format before it ever did... it's like saying PHOTOSHOP DOES NOT EQUAL PICTURE-FIDDLING!!! but when you a giant cat shooting laser beams at Gareth's head floating over LA, do you say "wow, digital picture manipulation" or do you say DUDE! PHOTOSHOP!!!

No, you wouldn't say "Dude, it's all two inch tape" any more than you'd look at a photograph and say "dude, it's just a Nikon single lense reflex" but when you see the musical equivalent of photoshopping - i.e. beatmatching and step delay and autotune and cutting and pasting of licks and sequencing etc. etc. etc. it is PERFECTLY JUSTIFIED to say "dude, it's all ProTooled".

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 29 March 2004 09:08 (twenty years ago) link

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 29 March 2004 09:20 (twenty years ago) link
