Gruff Rhys: C/D?

To my ears, one of the greatest voices of the nineties. To others, the international language of slight bunged-upness. Thoughts?

classic
appearently not a technically great voice, but i couldn't care less...
as a singer, lyricist and musician one of the few "indie" musicians who is almost always impeccable(the exception,in my opinion, being rings around the world, but even that had some great songs)

robin (robin), Saturday, 8 February 2003 20:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

somewhere in between. ok singer, good (but flawed music), ok lyricist.

he got up his own a bit on the last album. i am hoping they go a bit crazier on the next, be nicer to see more of a progression from guerilla rather than the last one which was a bit heavy with dull ballads.

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 9 February 2003 02:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Rings around the World" was phenomenal, and kinda trumped the Lips and the Rev for that whole orchestration thing, really. But I can't imagine them trying anything even close to that anymore, and I hope they don't. I fear for the Furries putting out a "Yoshimi".

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 9 February 2003 04:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

outdoing the lips or rev isn't much of an accomplishment these days, they're each stuck in their little creaky waltz phases and you're right actually rings would easily fit into that template. The first half of ratw was great, then they got into this idea that they were polemicizing even if all of their targts were obvious and stupid. also seeing them live with all of the digital equipment was a bit of a letdown, why not just play a rock show, who needs the synthesized trumpets and strings?

Has anyone been listening to the Gruff Rhys vs. Tony Da Gatorra album? It's interesting, though not necessarily in a good way. I'm pretty obsessed with the first track, "O Que Tu Tem?" I dunno why. Something about the guitars.

The 'proper' show (first clip) was fun imo but at least half the crowd left before the end. I fuck w/ the album, if it was some private press thing from 1974 or something that got dug up it would get all kinds of BJs from yer David Keenan/Aquarius types but it will prob mostly get listened to by SFA superfans who will hate it

tomas altbrolin (DJ Mencap), Monday, 2 August 2010 09:11 (thirteen years ago) link

that makes a very interesting point about the importance of backstory and context to an album's critical reception.

it's a completely sensible point, too.

I like that he had the balls to take this guy on tour and potentially alienate 95% of his fans who bought tickets to sold out shows.

bought that Geraint Jarman LP for £2.50 the other day, it's not bad

His bandmate Cian did some really incredible Geraint Jarman covers.

Found the writing in Gruff's thing a little hard to follow, tbh.

Disclaimer: I go off on one at times & signal is bad in the front room so just to note my dad was interested in liberation struggles not drum circles - & I didn’t articulate very clearly how Stockhausen influenced pop culture on many continents but that’s what Twitter is for -

lol, it's all coming together. Not the first Gruff interview where they misunderstood him on a few points.

Don't know who this is, but I imagine the market for Gruff Rhys & SFA rumors isn't particularly high in 2021 so I assume it's all true:

https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/super-furry-animals.271987/page-31#post-26346994

This album was recorded before Pang!, so I don't think this will be the album to reveal if it has or not. To me, it sounds like a logical progression from Babelsberg, had Babelsberg not had the orchestra added to it. The band sounds tighter, which I suppose makes sense as they'd never all played together when they recorded Babelsberg and had quite a bit of touring under their belt when they recorded this one.

There's also some semi-salacious stuff about why SFA haven't recorded anything in a decade, but it's not that interesting.

afriendlypioneer, Wednesday, 10 March 2021 20:50 (three years ago) link

I thought Babelsberg was a bit of a slog, unfortunately; the 'de-mix' more so, so I'll keep my expectations in line.

afriendlypioneer, Wednesday, 10 March 2021 20:50 (three years ago) link

Honestly every Gruff album since Yr Atal has had 1-3 decent songs on it and the rest is a slog. He’s released enough now that it might be time for a good CD-80 Best Of

im not really looking forward to a new album from him but perhaps someone here has a gruff rhys jones

himpathy with the devil (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 10 March 2021 22:57 (three years ago) link

the stuff re: no new sfa material is basically what i'd heard previously: gruff just isn't interested/on the same page as the others at the moment, but it's not impossible that they do something new eventually

ufo, Wednesday, 10 March 2021 23:03 (three years ago) link

Maybe it's the relative dearth of material from the other guys compared to all that Gruff's released, but I'll take a few more Das Koolies releases over whatever concept album Gruff's got brewing. Those 2 or 3 tracks were promising.

Hope there's some variety on the new one. MOR Gruff is nice, but I miss SFA Gruff.

Kind of changed my mind, though. Song is good. I like the pause near the end, then the chorus kicks in again. Video rules too. Hope there's one or two rockers.
