The Bubble Sisters...

"The Bubble Sisters are an exciting new pop group from Korea who aren't afraid to break a few rules. They flaunt the fact that they aren't traditionally anorexic model-types with horrible vocals singing songs written by jaded industry insiders who have complete disdain for the public's level of intelligence. The group dresses in hip fashions and their cool dance moves mimic a lot of other successful acts, but they do one thing that sets them apart from the all the other K-pop groups on TV. They perform in blackface."

It looks like they're dressed like the cast from Moesha from a pajama or slumber party!

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

The one at the end looks like Lillian Thuram being dragged into the gates of hell.

East Asia: still grappling with the idea that black people are real.

(Vice versa for Africa, really.)

I love this bit: "The group dresses in hip fashions..."

Makes you wonder what else east Asia is grappling with.

Good Lord!!!!

Someone, anyone, what is the video like? .... should it be braved?

I just went back up to look at the photo and I'm scared.

for more pop follies, try Australia's The Star Girls!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 28 February 2003 03:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

I watched the video and listened to the music. The music might be soulful.. well, compared to Faith Hill. At best, it's dreadfully mediocre MIDI showtune pop with vocals approaching the Ethel Merman timbre; and the video looks like one of those Crystal Lite ads from the 80s ("I believe in Crystal Lite, 'cause I BELIEVE in me!")

As for the blackface, well, it seems from the video that its use is not malicious or even hinting at making jokes at the expense of black people. Still though, goddamn, if money is going to be invested in a pop group, maybe one should do a little research slightly outside the box to see if the costumes are going to horrify the targets of admiration and tribute.. just maybe?

So, yeah, if you were hoping the video would be like a Vice Magazine production, you'll be relieved and/or disappointed.

And now to pull a Dave Q...

How do we know a good chunk of Western pop/musical acts aren't horribly offending non-Western people? What about all the cliches of token kabuki on all those 80s new wave album cover designs? What about the Sun City Girls embrace of eastern Asia (which may be a bad example, as they sometimes appear to want to offend everybody)?

It's over. No more blackface. The world cries for joy... maybe.

A big maybe with a comment like this:

Marketing Director Rob Seo even offered an apology, "To the 1 percent of people who were offended by this, we're really sorry.

1 %?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 1 March 2003 22:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

Maybe he meant 1% of the world population... which seems around right.

"Lead singer Nanda says all the extra attention was an unintentional by-product of the "blackface" gimmick. "We really love black music," she explained, drawing a distinction between who the band is parodying and who it respects. "We want to undermine the typical Korean band, who are pretty but don't have any talent, and open the doors to musically-talented people who, if they don't fit into this compartment, are usually forced underground.'"

THE BUBBLE SISTERS ARE ROCKIST!

The Bubble Sisters are awefully close to copyright infrigement also, track 3 "Always" is REALLY close to an 80's love song, which i can't remember at the moment.

If you missed looking at the official site, before it was taken down, i've got some of the pics, the intro .swf and other things for historical purposes. Will hopefully have full cd artwork up in the next week or so.

On the Star Girls, does Twinkle really have a hair-lip or am I just seeing things?

There's the CD Artwork. Larger versions available if you can read Korean, otherwise the sm(all) version will be enough to show off their versatility. Is this the En Vogue look? http://noneinc.com/Archive/BubbleSisters/CDArt/BS-14-bk09sm.jpg

Nitsuh is OTM. Blackface is a common shtick/gag performed by certain popular Japanese artists.
