Beavis and Butthead enriched an entire generation. This cannot be disputed. What were the best songs that they talked over? I'm making a mix CD, here are my choices so far:

Ween - Push the little Daisies

PJ Harvey - 50 Ft Queenie

Suzanne Vega - Blood Makes Noise

Whale - Homo Humpin Slomo Babe

Danzig - Mother

Daisy Chainsaw - Love Your Money

MC 900 Foot Jesus - If I Only Had a Brain

Rolling Stones - Emotional Rescue

Bee Gees - Jive Talkin'

Souixie & The Banshees - Peek-a-Boo

Suzanne Vega - Blood Makes Noise

Butthole Surfers - Who Was in my Room Last Night

Who did the "bow to splendidly" song? I'm thinking Morbid Angel, but I can't be sure. Where are the DVDs?

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Sunday, 13 April 2003 05:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ministry "New World Order" -- Butthead's Al Jourgensen barking impression is spot on.

Wax "California" -- I think MTV eventually censored Beavis entirely from saying the word "fire" but originally he had somewhat of an epileptic fit during this video. Teriffic video, teriffic band, by the way.

Pavement "Rattled by the Rush" -- "Try! Try, goddamnit! Try!"

"Dang" - Jon Spencer Blues Explosion

Totally weird video, and they just keep saying how cool it is. Then at the end: "Hey Beavis, does you Mom have any more nutmeg?"

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Sunday, 13 April 2003 06:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

I believe the injestion of nutmeg in copious amounts is supposed to be a mild hallucinogen. I tried this once during high school, using several heaping teaspoons in my local mall Starbucks chai, but unfortunately encountered inconclusive results.

What was the original video prompting Beavis to mount and hump the couch?

Famous Athlete, Sunday, 13 April 2003 07:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

can't remember which video, but my favourite one of those Blur britpop ones, after a discussion about whether "england" is near "britain":

Beavis (non plussed): "..."
Butthead: "..."
Beavis (eventually): "the Beatles ruined music"

at least that's my recollection, i hope i didn't make it up because it seemed spot on music criticism at the time.

I loved Beavis & Butthead's appearance as the hosts of I Love 1993 on BBC2 a while ago. Butthead's description of Peter Stringfellow as "the creepiest guy I've ever seen" was excellent, as was Beavis' musings on "Indecent Proposal":

"Well, y'know, Robert Redford's still pretty good looking and..."
*Butthead smacks Beavis around the head umpteeen times*

Didn't they do Head On by JaMC?

Also Liar - Rollins Band

I'm sure they did Baby Got Back at some point.

Bon Jovi - "Something For The Pain"

Beavis: "This sucks, but there's this one bit that's pretty cool-"

Butthead smacks him upside the head even more.

Beavis: "Godamn it Butthead! This rules!"

Was it to "Straight Outta Compton" that Beavis tried to convince Butt-head he was from Compton ("No you're not. You're a white wuss from right here.") and composed the rap "Dammit, dammit, son of a bitch"?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 13 April 2003 15:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

A quick question -

Since, on all the tapes and DVDs they've released of the Beavis and Butt Head series, they've cut out the moments of them watching music videos, does anyone know where I can get full, uncut episodes, including the videos (which were some of my favorite parts.)?

David Allen, Sunday, 13 April 2003 15:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

autovac (autovac), Sunday, 13 April 2003 16:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

They cut those out? Those were the best parts of the show.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 13 April 2003 17:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

The fact that they cut out the videos is beyond a travesty. There's a reason the movie sucked balls.

Evan (Evan), Sunday, 13 April 2003 17:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

So I just downloaded a bunch of episodes from Kazaa, and most of them have the music video commentary. By far, my favorite has been them watching "I kissed a girl," when Beavis says "Hey Butt-head those houses look fake" to which Butt Head replies "Yeah that's like the whole point of college music, to make the suburbs look bad."

David Allen, Sunday, 13 April 2003 18:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

Just saw them do Pavement - Rattled By the Rush, and it was brilliant. He said, "If you're gonna suck, at least kick ass. Like, The Jesus Lizard, they suck, but they kick ass."

I found it hilarious and I love both bands.

David Allen, Sunday, 13 April 2003 18:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

Jeez, thanks for letting me know. I was gonna order the DVD set this weekend. That sucks donkey dick.

the nina hagen song where they have nothuing at all to say

actually, i think that their reaction to nina hagen was "is this a joke?" and "isn't this something from the local access cable station?" or something like that.

i do remember them giving the silent treatment to milli vanilli.

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 13 April 2003 19:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

Best bit has to be where they start singing along with Chris Isaak in 'Wicked Games'.

But yeah, great show.

another fave b&b moment: video for some sludgy metal band comes on (i think it was crowbar). singer of said metal band starts grunting. b&b: "i think he's constipated" "yeah, i think he's trying to take a dump" "taking a dump onstage is cool"

Alien Sex Fiend.... "This video is pretty cool but the sound sucks. Turn down the volume. 'I'm a dead guy... I like to... eat people's brains out." Or something like that (it's been a long time). Classic.

if they dissed PJ like that, then that would be the greatest b&b episode evah!

and yes, there was one with grim reaper's "see you in hell." i think butthead flung a spoonful of mashed potatoes at the TV screen for that one.

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 13 April 2003 20:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

They ended up doing two Grim Reaper videos! They were the bete noire of the duo -- one started up and both Beavis and Butthead started screaming in pain.

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 13 April 2003 21:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

The funniest thing is that it envisions a world where these videos actually get played. Like one day you could randomly flip on MTV and there would be a Grim Reaper video playing!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 13 April 2003 21:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

there was such a world once, mr. diamond. it was called "headbanger's ball," circa 1987 and pre-thrash metal (when grim reaper would have played thereon).

b&b also slammed FZ and "you are what you is," if memory serves me correctly.

another What Was That Video RFI: they watched some ghastly thing with thunderbolts, a little asian girl holding a flower, a guy who looked like Santana dipped in dork sauce, lots of goofy effects, five bands members walking down a hill, etc. etc. It was HORRIFICALLY cheesy.

other favorite memories.

Bobby Brown's "Humpin' Around": the guys dance for a while, then note that the girl really WANTS IT.

Pavement's "Cut Your Hair": These guys are WHITE...and this is WHITE guy music. Beavis later comments that this video is trying too hard. In a really funny video the cat would have come out of his BUTT.

I love this thread, I LOVE it.

I am sort of scared that I remember each and every video mentioned on it (especially See You in Hell), and I have only two additions.

1. Keep their heads ringin' - Dre (Beavis: YEEAAAH! It's Dre, dropping plates on yo ass biotch!)

2. I Wanna Sex You Up - Color Me Badd (Butthead - Isn't this that group with Snow...and George Michael...and Kenny G? Beavis: Yeah, it's a super suck group.)

Too kind.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 7 June 2010 19:48 (fourteen years ago) link

There's one where the boys are watching a Blur video, and the dialogue went something like this:

Butthead: What language is that guy speaking?
Beavis: I hear some American words, but I don't know...
Butthead: I think it's English.
Beavis: English sucks.

They watch for a few moments. Then Butthead says, apropos of nothing: "You know those asswipes the Beatles? Those dudes ruined music."

Chonus, Monday, 7 June 2010 22:15 (fourteen years ago) link

I remember them listening to Nirvana. agreeing that the quiet verse bits sucked but the loud chorus was cool. "Yeh, but without the bit that sucked, the cool bit wouldn't sound as cool."

I love their analysis of the Whale "Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe" video about the nad inspections, armpit licking, and chicks with braces.

I don't doubt this is gonna be funny, cause I mean, mike judge

but everything about b&b is so culturally tied to the 90s that I find the idea of this sorta eerie

iatee, Sunday, 8 August 2010 18:11 (fourteen years ago) link

Will they still have the same bands on their t-shirts, I wonder. Can't imagine too many teenagers are into AC/DC these days.

billstevejim, Monday, 9 August 2010 04:04 (fourteen years ago) link

that flaming lips clip isn't bad at all.. but keep in mind i'm in the minority who thinks the show peaked with the shitty earlier episodes when beavis was still allowed to say "fire!"

billstevejim, Monday, 9 August 2010 04:09 (fourteen years ago) link

The original run didn't only include videos between 93-97.. They often somehow ended up viewing bizarre or campy clips from the late 70's and throughout the 80's.. So if the rumors are true, I'm hoping video selection won't only be including recent clips. In fact, that would be incredibly boring.

I don't know why, but "Tubthumping" and "Are You Jimmy Ray" just seem like the type of videos that should have been on this show but never were...

billstevejim, Monday, 9 August 2010 04:26 (fourteen years ago) link

I honestly can say that I don't know how they could possiblY mess up Beavis amd Butthead. It's not exactly primo shit with high standards. Their schtik has got to be pretty easy to write. The music videos might be suckier and new reoccuring characters could be weird though.

All and all I would like to see Beavis and Butthead exist in today's world. There is a lot of current events and new stuff they can experiment with

oh right, read the thread dog latin.

Um... I have a feeling this will be rub. I love B&B but they won't be able to revive this without revamping it, and I can't see them wearing (i dunno), my chemical romance t-shirts or whatever teens listen to these days.

will it be 30 year old B&B or will it be sons of B&B?

My favorite B&B moment with Black Sabbath's "Iron Man"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4jO-OGF2no

Bevis: "Hey Butthead, are these guys from Seattle?"
Butthead: "No, assmunch. They're American."

I think it's best if they do a Simpsons and simply don't age them. I do look forward to their thoughts on Nickelback and the like.

billstevejim, Saturday, 5 February 2011 00:04 (thirteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

The new show, which debuts later this year, will be very familiar to fans of the Nineties original. "They'll be self-contained segments with the boys in different situations like they used to be," Toffler says. "But this time around, they'll watch Jersey Shore, UFC matches and user-generated videos from YouTube, in addition to music videos." All of the programming will be displayed on the duo's TV, even if it comes from YouTube — "like silly videos of cats playing music."

"It will be much more viral this time around," MTV president Van Toffler says. "We're going to plant seeds of the characters throughout social-media networks like Facebook and Twitter, in addition to traditional programming on television and, potentially, in theaters."

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 20 February 2011 20:03 (thirteen years ago) link

Ah. So the new B&B is like Tosh.0 with MTV show product placement.

I'll pass.

My favourite bits of Beavis & Butthead 'commentary':

1. When 'Tomorrow' by Silverchair comes on and Beavis sings "MORE THAN A FEELING!" as the drums kick in.

2. Where Beavis hyperventilates himself and suddenly goes all Pitchfork Media during a video of 'Blind' by Korn.
