Wildhearts, Terrorvision, Skin, Skunk Anansie, Little Angels, Headswim can be added to that list: all Kerrang! staples from the early 90s, now forgotten

Neil S, Thursday, 1 September 2016 09:18 (seven years ago) link

Like I think to qualify you need to be an artist with a reasonable level of profile and/or credibility in a particular genre but who has been retrospectively airbrushed out of the conversation. The early 90s is chock full of these artists but Snow sure as hell wasn't one of them.

In that case, I think a better thread for discussion would be the one that I started a few years ago:

Artists/bands that were once quite popular, yet nowadays are mostly ignored in canonical history books

Tuomas, Thursday, 1 September 2016 09:21 (seven years ago) link

If you look through the NME albums-of-the-year list, which I think is a reasonable enough indication of stuff they thought was going to stand the test of time, the early 90s gives you albums by the 3rd Bass, Electribe 101, The Fatima Mansions, The Goats, Madder Rose and Gallon Drunk, none of whom afaik are listened to by anyone who wasn't there at the time or even referred to in 'lol early 90s' type articles.

Matt DC, Thursday, 1 September 2016 09:23 (seven years ago) link

I found that Tricks of teh Shade was something being played by people I hadn't expected to several years after the fact. I think I discovered them by chance thanks to the cd truning up cheap in a Borders cd section. & only recognised taht somebody was playing them a while after that.
But could be I'd remembered the name from reviews/coverage from the time.

Would love to get hold of live sets by both them and New Kingdom both of whom played live with bands.

I have a friend who I think is still involved with Gallon Drunk and James Johnston has wound up playing with the Bad Seeds over the last few years. But then again that isn't in GD capacity..

Stevolende, Thursday, 1 September 2016 09:32 (seven years ago) link

Should say though that Tricks of the Shade is the only Goats lp with the full magic as far as I can see. I think a central member left before the next lp.
So if people are coming across anything later they may not get what made them so special.

But do love Tricks

Stevolende, Thursday, 1 September 2016 09:39 (seven years ago) link

More nineties stuff mostly remembered from Now compilations and free magazine CDs I have cherished:

Shakespeare's Sister (apart from 'Stay' of course)
Eurythmics - Yes yes, Sweet Dreams, There Must Be An Angel - but for such a huge band I haven't noticed an awful lot of acts beyond, say, Texas repping for them
Senser
Tamsin Archer
Gin Blossoms
K7
Blaggers ITA
The For Carnation
Ether
The Wiseguys
Les Rythmes Digitales
Days of The New
Ultrasound
Marion

TARANTINO! (dog latin), Thursday, 1 September 2016 09:42 (seven years ago) link

Eurythmics first lp In The Garden is pretty essential if you're not already aware.
Nice mix of Brit folky stuff , psych and New Wave. Band on it is half Blondie and half Can and it's produced by Conny Plank.

Finally got a great remaster a few years ago and got rid of the tinniness that was on the original cd.

Stevolende, Thursday, 1 September 2016 09:47 (seven years ago) link

xp I don't think The For Carnation belong in that list, they're more in the obscure post-rock bracket rather than actually forgotten/passed over. Narcissism of small differences I know.

Neil S, Thursday, 1 September 2016 09:47 (seven years ago) link

K7

"Come Baby Come" still gets played in various places, the last time I heard it was just a couple of weeks ago in the Suicide Squad movie. So clearly people still remember that tune, and it's not like anyone knew anything else by them even in the '90s.

Tuomas, Thursday, 1 September 2016 09:58 (seven years ago) link

The Goats is a good one. All I can remember about them is a few bars of 'Rumblefish' and one of Ant & Dec on Saturday morning TV saying they were a big fan.

nashwan, Thursday, 1 September 2016 10:00 (seven years ago) link

The Eurythmics is the single worst answer in this thread.

Matt DC, Thursday, 1 September 2016 10:02 (seven years ago) link

Les Rythmes Digitales is one of the most successful producers of the last 20 years, not sure how that makes him "erased from history."

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Thursday, 1 September 2016 10:02 (seven years ago) link

Like the Eurythmics were literally in the History of British Pop segment of the London 2012 Olympics. That's about as far from the premise of this thread as you can get.

Matt DC, Thursday, 1 September 2016 10:05 (seven years ago) link

I guess Dog Latin meant that his solo music rarely gets played anymore, and most people probably don't even know it's the same guy who produced those Madonna hits?

:-O that's pretty amazing, I had no idea. It's like the Police, the Pretenders, UB40 etc - huge, huge late 70s/ eighties bands who went down in history as AOR staples but turned out to be a lot spikier and more interesting than that in the early days.

TARANTINO! (dog latin), Thursday, 1 September 2016 10:09 (seven years ago) link

xp I mean, he was never really that big as a solo artist, there was a minor amount of buzz around "Jacques Your Body" when it was used on that car advert, but I'd say that's if anything more well-remembered than similarly minor hits of the same era.

Colour me stoopid, I was literally looking at a list of old CDs I used to have and forgot who LRD even was.

TARANTINO! (dog latin), Thursday, 1 September 2016 10:11 (seven years ago) link

My answer for this would be some of the rubbish British faux disco hits of the late 70s and early 80s - I haven't heard them played or referred to anywhere at all since they were on Top of the Pops

if a guy out of The Eccentronic Research Council hadn't mentioned the band Mum And Dad in an interview recently, I think they'd be forgotten by literally everyone on Earth, including everyone in the band itself

If no one's heard of them to begin with, I don't think they can be "erased" from history...

Latter two still mentioned/liked a lot. Possibly both reformed as well?? The rest = yeah, forgotten.

Will also say it probably doesn't count as "being erased from history" if you were never part of history in the first place. Otherwise I could just list all my bands.

emil.y, Thursday, 1 September 2016 12:54 (seven years ago) link

The Fatima Mansions seem like a good one. Microdisney as well, even though Microdisney feel more in tune with styles that people care about in 2016.I don't know if they are both better remembered in Ireland maybe?

Huge hits that you never hear anymore:
Robert Plant - "Tall Cool One"
EMF - "Unbelievable"

I feel sure I've heard Unbelievable recently.

I'm told that Martha and the Muffins - "Echo Beach" gets a lot of play in the UK but I've literally never heard it on Canadian radio, despite it going gold and winning a Juno.

In the UK you hear Echo Beach all over the place but never any other Martha & The Muffins songs, ever.

Matt DC, Thursday, 1 September 2016 14:00 (seven years ago) link

I should get points for this: A tune I really love and have listened to often/recently combines two artists on this thread. Madder Rose "Overflow (FC Kahuna Headstart Me Up Mix)"

Can movies be discussed in this thread? I was just reflecting on the fact that "American Pie" was a gigantic smash hit, people quoted from it all the time, it was seen as the "Animal House" of its moment, and now? Kind of gone, right?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 1 September 2016 14:15 (seven years ago) link

other than the 300 straight to DVD sequels under the name American Pie? hell local art movie house just showed it as a 'cult classic'. it's ubiquitous, people still say "oh, Stiffler's mom", MILF, an existing term, became part of mainstream lexicon and is still there. history enhanced, not erased it!

Neanderthal, Thursday, 1 September 2016 14:19 (seven years ago) link

OK re MILF very good point. "Stiffler's mom" is not something I've heard referred to in a decade but OK point taken.

local art movie house just showed it as a 'cult classic'

you need a local rich person to make them a big donation so they don't have to do this shit tho

I live in Canada and I've definitely heard "Echo Beach" on the radio. Don't think I've heard anything else by them.

MarkoP, Thursday, 1 September 2016 14:29 (seven years ago) link

American Pie or its sequels seem to be on tv quite a bit on various channels. So yeah seems to be more staple than forgotten.

Stevolende, Thursday, 1 September 2016 14:38 (seven years ago) link

I think that in that in the UK Martha + the Muffins are regarded as a memorable one-hit wonder with a funny name, which afaict is how they have always been regarded here since 1979, I don't think there has been any change in their profile as such

soref, Thursday, 1 September 2016 14:39 (seven years ago) link

What about Can't Hardly Wait? I feel like that was big back in the day. Or maybe I just knew a lot of people with the soundtrack.

What about Ashley MacIsaac and the Rankin Family? Both were multiplatinum in the 90s.

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Thursday, 1 September 2016 14:56 (seven years ago) link

Apparently they were M+M before Marshall Mathers.

Which should make them memorable really.

I thought I'd come across some member being known as part of another band but can't see anything other than Daniel Lanois's sister playing bass for a few years.

the 3rd martha and the muffins album ('this is the ice age') is worth a listen - has an odd disconnected vibe to it, and is a bit eno-ish in places. one of the earlier daniel lanois productions fwiw (his sister was in the band at that point)

This was HUGE among, well, me and one other guy in 8th grade:

The Viva Dead Ponies album became one of those "holy grail" used CDs for me. I used to check for it in every store I went into. By the time I finally tracked down a copy though, I didn't like it at all. I wonder if I'd enjoy it now?
