no, what yr favourite, but which song has been on yr stereo more than any other. it doesn't have to have been made this year.

mine? daft punk - digital love, this has probably won by a country mile

gareth, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Pretty much everything on Lateralus, since I've played that the most often.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

either no-man's version of nick drake's 'road' or sylvian's 'taking the veil'

geordie racer, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"Digital Love" and "One More Time" by Daft Punk--best songs on a great album, perfect records both. "Romeo" by Basement Jaxx--ditto. As far as album cuts go, Old 97's "Buick City Complex" and the Apples in Stereo's "If You Want to Wear a Hat" are both amazing.

I don't have to play a lot of these because they're everywhere: Nelly's "Ride wit' Me" (always thought that was the best song on the album and radio/MTV has validated me--it's also the best video I've seen in years) and Missy Elliott's "Get Ur Freak On," a.k.a. the funniest single of the year except "Digital Love." I love them just as much as the above.

Michaelangelo Matos, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

where's that apples song from?

ethan, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Nothing brand new. I've gone off brand new, for some reason. Summer of Falling Stars by the Groovy Cellar wins by a long stretch - I expect the neighbours hate my guts for this.

Madchen, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Geordie - Who is no-man? An artist or is it just a version of the song. "Road" is my personal favourite of Nick Drake. Where do I get the record? Tell me more.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"Penelope" by Of Montreal
"Duck Pond" by the Sixth Great Lake
"the Weight" by the Band
"Getting By" by the Rentals
"the Ammaring" by J.Mascis and the Fog
"I'll Be There For You" by Bon Jovi

These are the songs I've listened to most this year, I'm pretty sure!

james e l, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

was it just me or did j mascis's "more light" rock anybody else's ass? seemed to be neglected on the end of the year lists.

ernest, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Pretty much every song off The Clientele's Suburban Light. With Lacewings, in particular, on constant repeat.

Bonaduces' "Sara's Black Pyjamas" probably got played the most often but I spent more time listening to "Itchy Woo".

zacko warner, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

New Pornographers-"Letter from an Occupant". Most listened to downloads: "Get Ur Freak On" and 112-"Peaches and Cream". And all the Nelly singles...

Arthur, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger". The other songs on the new Daft Punk are alright....but this one is just amazing. Computer-funk perfected. Hopefully in a month or so it'll be the new Cornelius singles...

Adam Bruneau, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I over played "Mass Romantic" too myself, now I can't put on The New Pornographers without skipping that song, as much as I used and still kinda do deep down inside love it.

Either "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" by Eve & Gwen Stefani or "Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors" by Radiohead. "Dream On" by Depeche Mode comes close.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

'one more time', kraftwerl's 'neon lights' and 'europe endless', godspeed 'storm' (first 13 minutes), miles' 'in a silent way'. i am hopelessly embedded in history. except 'actionist respoke/ by mouse on mars, a different stereolab track every week, 'life in a glasshouse', bjork's 'unison' (god bless thee, mp3!)

matthew james, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Currently out on the floor by Dobie Gray from a Northern soul comp.

Otherwise, probably something from the last Johnny Cash CD and Get UR freak on.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

'strawberry letter #23' by shuggie otis and 'captain easychord' by stereolab

Maybe "Human" by Goldfrapp.

"Song Of The Burmese Land," a song-poem by Cara Stewart. This song has won me back many of the friends I lost through The Shaggs. "To the lunatic asylum I am going... " (Look for it on the WFMU website.)

X. Y. Zedd, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Sheer number of times played, probably I Got Erection but that was just over the course of one weekend having it DRILLED INTO MY BRAIN so I don't count it. It's probably either One More Time, Give It 2 Me, or Survivor for current-year-songs.

Ally, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Wilfully, as opposed to hearing on radio? The second half of the Missy album, especially Party People and Step Off. Also a coupla particular trax of the Josie soundtrack. Also, Outkast's Call Before I Come.

Michaelangelo Matos, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i wish the apples and their beards would leave denver. not from this year but still most played gorky's 'the girl i've always known' just cause i repeat it endlessly.

keith, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Wow, Ally, that's the second time you've mentioned Turbonegro overkill... hmmm...

I must have listened to Pyramid Song two hundred times. The best was on a plane at night. I was palpably terrified and overcome with melancholy, and at the same time so amazed to have been moved that much by anything at all.

Dave M., Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

how did i not hear about a new apples ep? i need to spend more time looking at new indie rock releases or something.

eve + gwen + dre is fantastic. i think i could listen to that song thrice every day for the rest of my life and be happy. funniest thing seen on trl this year was kids from the audience randomly picking the order of the top ten and seeing some girl turn around holding a card rather sloppily, clearing displaying 'LET ME BLOW YA'. oops.

ethan, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I gotta confess, Eve leaves me pretty cold. A case where I should be compelled I feel barely a note of acknowledgment. But better her than Eve 6. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

All of Amnesiac.

Melissa W, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yeah, I don't have that many singles, and I tend to listen to entire albums, so probably Hometown Traffic and Suburban Light.

youn, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I've heard these ten songs more this year than all other music combined:

Gluecifer - "I Got A War"
Turbonegro - "I Got Erection"
Lifehouse - "Hanging By A Moment"
Gluecifer - "The General Says Hell Yeah!", "Sputnik Monroe", "Bossheaded"
Memphis Bleek/Jay-Z - "Is That Your Bitch"
Madonna - "Into the Groove"
Guns 'N Roses - "Rocket Queen"
Mensen - "City of Lights"
The Wipers - "Is This Real?"
Turbonegro - "The Age of Pamparius"

Otis Wheeler, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Otis Wheeler, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Dave Matthews Band "Two Step" (do differing recordings and live versions all still count as the same song?)

Alan Sheffield, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"Powerfulll" by Kardinal Offishall has in the last 2 months outpaced everything else. The line that goes "makin babies till our army's on top..." is good for freaking out strangers, the snare that comes in waaay too early each time freaks out the musos, and the Jamaican Black Power slogans from Toronto freak ME out.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I've only had the album for about 3 weeks, but "Miner at the Dial-A-View" by Grandaddy is probably already most-played this year so far. Yeah, I know it sounds like it would be obscuro indie crap, but man is it sad and pretty and touching.

"Digital Love" and "One More Time", Missy's "Lick Shots", Basement Jaxx's "Romeo", MRI's "To Be Honest", Nelly's "E.I.", Beenie Man's "Girls Dem Sugar", Aaliyah's "We Need A Resolution", Sticky's "Boo", Eve's "Let Me Blow Ya Mind", Destiny's Child's "Survivor", Cannibal Ox's "B-Boy's Alpha".

Not counting songs we've been mixing, and therefore *had* to listen to over and over and over and over to the point of nausea...

Hrmmm... this is a hard question, because I haven't really Carolanned on anything recently.

Maybe "Who's Got The Crack?" by the Moldy Peaches. Oh, and "The Twelve Steps" by Spiritualized.

masonic boom, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Too many to think of... but probably Belle and Sebastian's 'Jonathan David' or Aerodynamite by Daft Punk.

Paul Strange, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Both songs which make me CRINGE at this point.

But then again, hearing Amnesiac would probably make Paul cringe at this point.

Anyway, what the HELL are you doing on the internet, boy? Get back to work, or you'll never make it home tonight!

masonic boom, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Probably the seven or eight best tracks on Since I Left You: the sequence from Diners Only to Electricity, Extra Kings, Radio and Live At Dominoes.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"2 Seconds of Your Love" by Laura Cantrell.

stevie t, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Probably "Jenny & the Ess-Dog" and "3rd Planet".

Ernest: (damn time zone difference) "More Light" is definitely underrated and rocked big time. It got me back into Dinosaur Jr., at a time when I had enough of listening to them. He rules live, too.

alex in montreal, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I listen to stuff at work. I sit with headphones on allday, sometimes nodding furiously, sometimes not. The CDs which have stayed in the office longest this year are:

Love - "Forever Changes" remaster. Tyde - "Once" Verlaines - "Over the Moon" Life Without Buildings - "Any Other City" Belle & Sebastian - "Jonathan David" Strokes - "Is This It?" Super Furry Animals - "Rings Around the World" Television Personalities - "Part Time Punks" compilation Get Up Kids - "Something to Write Home About"

I tried listening to the radio instead for a while, but XFM was driving me slowly insane. Or is that inane.

Andrew Williams, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Probably something from Amnesiac. Or, more likely, a pop track that's on heavy MTV and radio rotation. Chances are it's "Survivor" or Nelly Furtardo's unavoidable ornithological ditty. Those weren't by choice, however. *My* "Pyramid Song" experience: During a holiday, on the beach, at night, slightly intoxicated, with headphones on: magical. Almost.

Also: Sitting in my hotel room at night with Loveless, particularly "To Here Knows When", playing at very low levels. Outside, I could hear both the crashing ocean waves and disco club dance beats ( They had a small club inside the hotel ). Occasionally, the tones of Loveless would synchronize with the sounds emanating from outside my window and the perceived magnitude of the music would increase dramatically. Astounding.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I forgot about Is That Your Bitch? That's the best song ever, besides the other songs that are better. I've been listening to Speedballin' a lot since I got the Tomb Raider CD, and on the Outkast tip I've probably heard Ms. Jackson about 8 trillion times this year.

Ally, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Daft Punk's "Discovery" album has been on heavy rotation since I got it. Other tunes: "Peaches and cream"-112, "Raise it up"-Slum Village, "The Boston rag"-Steely Dan, "The jack"-AC/DC, "Cause cheap is how I feel"-Cowboy Junkies,"Cold as ice"-MOP, "Just step s'ways"- The Fall...loads more

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Past, Present and Future by the Shangri-Las. I just listen to it over and over again, trying to find some imperfection. Next? Probably 'She's Got You' by Timi Yuro.

Nick, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oooh, talking of Timo Yuro, "It'll never be over for me" I've probably played most this year.

Emerson Quartet's recording of the Debussy string quartet.

Mr. Mark Lerner, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Kris: You bet your ass, "oh my god"! Saw them @ their hometurf, and got swallowed up by an honest-to-god MOSH PIT. People were flying all over the place, climbing up poles, going crazy. In CT, though, the fans were more reserved and respectful, which was a bit of a disappointment. But THEY (the Bolt) most certainly were NOT.

I've rolls of film with pictures from both shows I need to develop one of these days. Oh, yeah.

David Raposa, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I saw them at some artspace in south Boston, and again at a friend's house in Davis, CA. EVERYONE was going crazy both places. They are really fucking loud.

Kris, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Fuck. I only saw the last three posts and thought Kris and Dave were talking about the Emerson playing Debussy. Would that ever fucking rock.

Josh, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I've seen the Emerson Quartet, but it was Mozart and I must've been 10. The crowd was not going crazy, from what I recall.

My Last.Fm last 6 months is made up solely of Miami Horror and Vashti Bunyan songs, which leads me to believe I must have fallen asleep or left the house with these two albums playing.

Top song of the last year is Joni Mitchell's 'People's Parties', which is great and I love. Overall is 'Bats In The Attic' by King Creosote & Jon Hopkins, but I think that comes from a 2011 error when Last.Fm was scrobbling songs multiple times over.

Conclusion - Last.FM is pretty useless.

Last.FM chart reflects my perfectly well-adjusted personality with a tie between:

Dinah Washington – September In The Rain
The Fall – New Face In Hell

In actuality though the top songs would be the soundtrack to whatever I'm editing. My poor neighbours.
