C650MB: 2002 - 454 Minutes of Madness

Yeah, I know it's about five months too late for this to be that interesting, but I feel like sharing anyhow. This is what happens when you have a CD burner and a portable CD player that can play MP3 CDRs as well as lots of good references to go by (like Matos and Pazznjop and this board here). This is about 620-something MB worth of stuff (@192 kbps), representing my favorite music from 2002 (albeit not necessarily of 2002, since a lot of this I first heard this year, some of it for the first time last week for the sole purpose of fleshing out this comp). Note the inclusion of lots of stuff you (or I) probably had no idea I liked. Also note the complete lack of Wilco (the honeymoon is over, folx). Finally, note that there are probably a couple things that, while released in the United States on a wide scale in '02, were initially released in years prior -- even though such standards were why I left out the Hives, Vitalic, Super Furry Animals and Kylie Minogue.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 10 May 2003 17:40 (twenty years ago) link

The problem with making mixes like this is that it doesn't look as personal and interesting as ones with only fifteen songs. That said, I would like to point out that tracks 12-23 is a sequence I'm especially geeked over.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 10 May 2003 17:46 (twenty years ago) link

Notes on selected songs:

009 Redman & Gorillaz - Gorillaz On My Mind
This is almost the exact same beat as "19-2000" but instead of Damon Albarn trying to be Drooper or Snork or Dingledong or whoever, it's Redman being a goofy motherfucker ("WHO'S THAT AAAAAAAPE?") and giving the rare outta-town hip-hop shoutout to Minnesota (before Detroit even!). I haven't seen Blade 2 but I can not figure out any sort of context where this would fit in any scene.

010 50 Cent - Wanksta
I mentioned somewhere on this board that I think this is the worst beat ever, which does actually sort of make it endearing. That, and the fact that one of my friends is going to use a sentence breakdown of the chorus to teach her Somali ESL students the intricacies of hip-hop slang.

015 Jay-Z - Poppin' Tags (ft. Big Boi, Killer Mike and Twista)
016 El-P - Truancy
017 Snoop Dogg - You Got What I Want (feat. Ludacris and G Loc)
This actually works. I shit you not.

065 Clinic - The Bridge
I have no idea why I picked this song out of all of the stuff on Walking With Thee except that it sounds like the Yardbirds doing disco.

087 Boards of Canada - 1969
088 Truth Hurts Feat. Rakim - Addictive
Probably my favorite song-to-song segue on the whole mix.

102 Mark Mallman - Who's Gonna Save You Now
Some guy who's famous in Minneapolis and sort of not famous everywhere else. This is sort of like Ben Folds Five with a yen for T. Rex and heroin.

One Giant Leap - My Culture.mp3

fuck how did THAT get in there! etc.

i had 'Private Press' with me so didnt bother sticking anything from that on there...surprising absence of 'Dead Leaves & The Dirty Ground' however

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 10 May 2003 18:58 (twenty years ago) link

OK, i'll give this CD-R of mine away to the first person who e-mails me

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 10 May 2003 18:59 (twenty years ago) link

Fascinating mix, Nate.

I am even more geeked to get started on the next one: 1972! Funk funk FUNK FUNK FUNK

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 11 May 2003 00:16 (twenty years ago) link

ok mp3 gluttony. i've done a 1989-93 hip hop one (vol.1 only...theres so much, sheesh), on the back of my recent mp3 playing cd walkman.
trades welcome.

What do these MP3 CDRs play on? Will they work on my laptop?

Nick H, Sunday, 11 May 2003 11:57 (twenty years ago) link

trades welcome.

*Ahem...*
We have to finish our previous transaction before we can start another round of CD-R swaps.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Sunday, 11 May 2003 12:16 (twenty years ago) link

they should work on your laptop's CD/DVD-ROM fine Nick...unless its a Mac, that could be tricky

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 11 May 2003 12:45 (twenty years ago) link

Nate's CD is much better than mine, but mine is from a year i spent most of not posting on ILM so it lacks that influence somewhat - this year's best of should be a lot more varied and interesting but hopefully no less a reflection of my true self

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 11 May 2003 15:45 (twenty years ago) link

Kewl. Both those mixes look killer.

Nick H, Sunday, 11 May 2003 17:48 (twenty years ago) link

i wanna see tracklisting for gaz's hip hop set. it's always interesting to see which way someone leans when they're drawing from that era, y'know?

nebbesh (nebbesh), Sunday, 11 May 2003 20:06 (twenty years ago) link

What do these MP3 CDRs play on?

I recently bought a Panasonic SL-SX 420 portable for $50, which was the cheapest MP3 CD player I could find. The headphones are crap, but I already have good ones, and besides I usually listen to it through speakers.

I've got dozens of CDs from archiving downloads off my hard drive over the last 2 years. There's no rhyme or reason to what's combined on those disks, since I never anticipated playing them back in that form - I just needed to free up drive space. Now that I can play them, I am beginning to burn stuff in groups that make some sense, like the Rubbles Box, Ethiopiques, Siouxsie B-Sides, whatever. It is a bit much to expect to listen to them straight through - I get up to 12 hours of music on some 700 MB CDs, depending on bitrate. However, the prospect of actually programming a mix of that length track by track would call for one of those Underworld-lenght vacations. So, I'm still figuring out how to best take advantage of this format. At a minimum, it's a handy way to hang onto stuff you'd rather not commit to stacks of regular audio CDs.

Curt (cgould), Sunday, 11 May 2003 20:39 (twenty years ago) link

i just put the CD in and set to random usually...obviously you could rename in each file numerically in the order you want them to play or something - but not even i have time for that

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 11 May 2003 21:58 (twenty years ago) link

custos...in the mail this week...honest!

nebbesh, will try.
