13. When U Were Mine -- Cyndi Lauper

JesseFox (JesseFox), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:28 (twenty years ago) link

Most of "The Family" album .

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:28 (twenty years ago) link

I wish Joni Mitchell had recorded that song he wrote for her. I think it was called "U R My Emotional Pump" or something like that.

JesseFox (JesseFox), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:29 (twenty years ago) link

"Sussudio"?!! That was just Uncle Phil rippin' him off.

"When U Were Mine" is on CONTROVERSY (I think?). Or PRINCE. It's on one of the early records...

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:30 (twenty years ago) link

oops ! hey that's what you call a coincidence.

right erm...

can't think of another.

was 'jerk out' by the time by him ?

piscesboy, Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:31 (twenty years ago) link

"when you were mine" is on dirty mind isn't it? it was also covered by BOB SEGER!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:33 (twenty years ago) link

Yep, it's on Dirty Mind. Do covers not count? (Actually, he recorded "Nothing Compares 2 U" too.)

Also -- Kate Bush, "Why Should I Love You?" (And why is it not called "Why Should I Love U?")

JesseFox (JesseFox), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:33 (twenty years ago) link

the family recorded "nothing compares 2 u", prince didn't get around to recording it til post sinead

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:35 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, and that was live...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:35 (twenty years ago) link

...which doesn't really count.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:35 (twenty years ago) link

If Phil Collins goes on the list then so does TLC - "Waterfalls".

I was going to list a George Clinton collaboration but I just listened to "The Big Pump" from Hey Man ... Smell My Finger, and god is it shit!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:36 (twenty years ago) link

I'm all for ripoffs counting, but wasn't "Sussudio" more of a Jam/Lewis rip than a Prince one?

Sly Fox, "Let's Go All the Way"
Ready For the World, "Oh Sheila!"

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:37 (twenty years ago) link

ok so help me out - what exactly should count here? I was initially thinking strictly prince-sanctioned protege stuff & collaborations but maybe we should open it up to covers and rip-offs to keep it interesting.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:38 (twenty years ago) link

(btw, I was about to start a thread like this, so yay!)

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:39 (twenty years ago) link

fuck if we're gonna bust open the fake prince songs cherry

Ready For The World - "Oh Sheila"
Shalamar - "Dancing in the Sheets"
Nine Inch Nails - "Closer"
Outkast - "Toilet Tisha"
Elvis Costello - "Blue Chair"

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:39 (twenty years ago) link

aargh xpost!

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:39 (twenty years ago) link

D'angelo - "How Does It Feel"

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:41 (twenty years ago) link

Morris Day, "Oak Tree" (well...)

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:43 (twenty years ago) link

lenny kravitz' first record seemed pretty "around the world in a day" influenced to me, maybe it's just a similar beatles + sly ideal behind em...I know it's uncool, but I loved "Let Love Rule" when it came out. Does the Cody Chestnutt record sound like this? I will buy it if it does.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:48 (twenty years ago) link

sort of but it's hidden behind lotsa 4-track murk; also his lyrics are better than Kravitz's (whose aren't?)

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:53 (twenty years ago) link

Beck, "Debra"

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:55 (twenty years ago) link

Best trying-to-be-Prince album? How about Gold Experience??

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 22 May 2003 18:12 (twenty years ago) link

"it was also covered by BOB SEGER!"

Mitch Ryder also did it on his comeback LP, the one John Mellencamp produced.

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Thursday, 22 May 2003 18:21 (twenty years ago) link

fake prince:

Rori - "Wild Girls"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 22 May 2003 19:22 (twenty years ago) link

shit, charles is right ... i think i got mitch ryder and bob seger mixed up.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 22 May 2003 19:58 (twenty years ago) link

Karl Wallinger did some not-very-good fake Prince stuff, in between his fake Lennon and fake Kinks things.

JesseFox (JesseFox), Thursday, 22 May 2003 20:06 (twenty years ago) link

we get 40 posts into the thread w/o mentioning Chaka Khan's cover of "I Feel For You"??

M Specktor (M Specktor), Thursday, 22 May 2003 20:07 (twenty years ago) link

No Doubt, "Waiting Room". He takes over the track with just his backing vocals.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 22 May 2003 23:25 (twenty years ago) link

sorry, were manic monday and waterfalls by prince?

robin (robin), Thursday, 22 May 2003 23:36 (twenty years ago) link

Fake Prince in the house world... half of Rooty and Bob Sinclair's "Got to Be Free."

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 22 May 2003 23:45 (twenty years ago) link

there's no janet on this thread?!

i had no idea about 'manic monday'. god i really love prince.

minna (minna), Friday, 23 May 2003 00:03 (twenty years ago) link

no Janet because Jam/Lewis is parallel Prince, not fake. also, The Gold Experience is definitely Prince pastiche but also great. and half of Rooty? try all of it.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 23 May 2003 00:17 (twenty years ago) link

I'd really have to stretch out backwards to think of "Where's Your Head At" as a Prince pasiche. So, we'll go with 9/10ths of Rooty.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 23 May 2003 00:20 (twenty years ago) link

Nobody answered Robin so I will: yes, "Manic Monday" was written by Prince for the Bangles (under the pseudonym "Christopher"). "Waterfalls" had no Prince involvement, but sounds like it :)

Another facsimile: Pig (80's WaxTrax dude) - "Never For Fun"

a drug by the name of WORLD WITHOUT END (Jon Lewis), Monday, 2 February 2015 17:41 (nine years ago) link

I think I have it somewhere? Maybe? I'll take a look when I'm home.

I seriously need to double down on evangelizing that A'Me Lorain album. One of the most underrated pop albums of the '80s (with only a handful of mentions on ILM).

Indiana Jones and the Sphincter of the Sphinx (Old Lunch), Monday, 2 February 2015 17:45 (nine years ago) link

I have that Jill Jones album, it's actually pretty easy to find on vinyl, but the CDs are very hard to come by, as it only had one CD pressing in 1988, and it must've been pretty small considering the market for compact discs back then. Anyway, after years of searching I noticed some Minneapolis record store was selling a couple of new(!) copies online for a reasonable price, so I quickly snatched one.

Anyway, it's a great album, possibly the best non-Prince one he produced, I'll see what I can do about sharing the joy...

Tuomas, Monday, 2 February 2015 17:56 (nine years ago) link

I looove the prince demo of g spot and have long wanted to hear how it plays in it's jj guise

a drug by the name of WORLD WITHOUT END (Jon Lewis), Monday, 2 February 2015 17:58 (nine years ago) link

The only complaint I have about the album is that it doesn't include the club mix of "Mia Bocca", the best tune Jill Jones ever made. The album version (which segues straight from the intro) of it is really good too, but the club mix is even better.

Always wonder if "Oh Sheila" is intentionally named after Sheila E. in order to add to the confusion.

Radio Free European Son (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 29 April 2016 20:15 (seven years ago) link

Lol, Wikipedia:

The song is commonly misattributed to Prince, due to similarity to his vocal and musical style, as well as the belief that the song's lyrics allude to frequent Prince collaborator Sheila E.[2][3] Ready for the World's Melvin Riley denied any connection with the two artists, stating that the subject of the song was a fictional character. However, the song's backbeat was inspired by the Prince song "Lady Cab Driver."

I think I mentioned them upthread, but Klymaxx's two mid-80s albums (Meeting in the Ladies' Room and Klymaxx) certainly remind me of Prince/Minneapolis style synth funk.

two weeks pass...

Was listening to Talking Heads' "Making Flippy Floppy," from 1983, the other day and thinking that the chorus (and the synth hook in particular) is kind of Prince-like. But maybe that's just because it's Bernie Worrell, and he influenced Prince's keyboard style?
