Absolute classic imho.....David McComb was one of the greatest songwriters of his generation, rest his soul. Whatcha think?

Sandy, Monday, 16 June 2003 00:24 (twenty years ago) link

Born*Sandy*Devotional easily one of the best Australian albums ever. Some fantastic singles too ("Beautiful Waste", "Trick of the Light", "Goodbye Little Boy"). All in all, classic.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 16 June 2003 00:28 (twenty years ago) link

i like them fine. born sandy devotional was a constantplay record for me at the time.
raining pleasure is a beautiful song.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 16 June 2003 00:31 (twenty years ago) link

Sometimes the "D" in C/D is completely unnecessary. This is one such case.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Monday, 16 June 2003 00:33 (twenty years ago) link

i dunno though, i listened to them recently and i didn't love them to death or anything. they're not dud, just less than classic i think. good, pleasurable, crafted.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 16 June 2003 00:38 (twenty years ago) link

their track on "Tales..." made me go back & listen again and I love them just as much and perhaps appreciate them even more now.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 16 June 2003 00:56 (twenty years ago) link

ha! recently on blissblog..."the late Eighties...a time when things were so desperate that The Triffids were regarded as saviours"

gaz (gaz), Monday, 16 June 2003 01:47 (twenty years ago) link

well i don't think simon's really the man when it comes to decided on the worth of the triffids. they are excellent but not really savours.

born sandy devotional is a great great record of time and importanly place. it screaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaams western australia.

listen 'wwwwwwwwwesssssssssssssssssternnnnnnnnn australiiiiiiiiiiiaaaaa"

yup

gallantseagull, Monday, 16 June 2003 02:19 (twenty years ago) link

heh. it amuses me muchly that whilst Melbourne and Sydney have such a rich and long musical heritage, Perth and Brisbane turned out the best records of all.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 16 June 2003 02:21 (twenty years ago) link

i remember i shared a place with an english girl at the time of BSD and she was asking me for music which sounded like australia and i recommended BSD but she didn't get it.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 16 June 2003 02:25 (twenty years ago) link

cripes, what's not to get? was it the amazing melodies she didn't understand? the evocative, succinct lyrics?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 16 June 2003 02:27 (twenty years ago) link

i think her "idea" of australia was different to mine. maybe she'd never been to WA...

gaz (gaz), Monday, 16 June 2003 02:37 (twenty years ago) link

perhaps she was thinking Slim Dusty or Kevin Bloody Wilson

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 16 June 2003 02:38 (twenty years ago) link

Calenture - i love that album despite connections to scott/charlene's wedding.

s.r.w. (s.r.w.), Monday, 16 June 2003 06:56 (twenty years ago) link

It's pretty much constructed my idea about what Australia is like so yeah it 'reminds' me of it!

(Actually there's an idea)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 16 June 2003 07:01 (twenty years ago) link

not classic by any stretch. david mccomb had a poet's lyrical flair alright but the triffids always struck me as a little lifeless musically, had nothing of the spark or imagination of a band like the go betweens (to whom they were often compared). 'wide open road' is an exception though - just a beautiful song. jill birt's songs always made me cringe too. i don't think their music has aged particularly well either. having said that, they were actually pretty good on the three occasions i saw them play live.

angelo (angelo), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:06 (twenty years ago) link

I'll kindly disagree with you, angelo...I like the Go-Betweens but think the Triffids were more adventerous musically. Just take "The Black Swan" LP as an example. It wasn't perfect, and had a few dud tracks, but was more varied and gutsy than any GB album I can think of. And the Field of Glass EP was just stunning. No lack of spark there. But hey, it's all quite subjective, isn't it?

Very envious that you got to see them live!

the first batch of the born sandy re-ish has this fantastic booklet included as a bonus, it's all excerpts from dave mccomb's scrapbooks and it basically lays the whole creative process of the album bare.

Oh man, I hadn't caught wind of these. Will definitely jump for the Calenture reissue, I love that thing to pieces. How are the extra tracks on that?

NickB, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 08:34 (seventeen years ago) link

the bonus tracks on the first disc are the B-sides of the singles they had off that album, and disc 2 is a complete alternative version of the album (all but two or three tracks aren't present in rehearsal/demo form, the rest are, as are a couple of tracks that were recorded at the same sessions but didn't end up on the album.)

StanM, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 08:51 (seventeen years ago) link

the bonus tracks on disc 2 sound a little rougher and less electronic/no string section, since they are rehearsal demos, but The Triffids were a pretty great live band, so the songs still work, IMHO.

StanM, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 08:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, I'm all for a little less polish. Look forward to hearing it.

NickB, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 08:57 (seventeen years ago) link

track lists are on that forum, by the way. (glee, the main poster there = guitarist Graham Lee, who's overseeing the reissues)

StanM, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 08:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Does anyone know the story behind The Black Swan? I remember hearing that this was originally supposed to be even longer, but the record company wouldn't release it in that form -- I always figured that's why some of the B-sides from that era (Go Home Eddy, Shell of The Man off the GoodBye Little Boy 12") were so great (i.e. slated for the album but left off in the end). Anyway, I was hoping this would be in this batch of reissues, but it wasn't.

byebyepride, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 09:02 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm sure all will be revealed in the booklet when it gets released (later this year) - there are a pretty revealing couple of texts about Calenture and how that took shape (lots of discussions with managers and Island as well).

also, glee says this on the first thread I linked to:

Not decided on the exact makeup of TBS yet.
It's very much a work in progress. (...) There's a huge amount of stuff to wade through. TBS was probably the most fully demoed album of all and the demos are high quality and quite revealing.

StanM, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 09:40 (seventeen years ago) link

So I got the BSD reissue used the other day (with the booklet even) -- very nice, had heard the original album via mp3s some years back but good to hear it straight up. That said I do agree with the occasional comments above that the band's work is almost too studied, just. There's something about a lot of their songs that doesn't dig as deep as I might have expected, even though I can admire the results. No complaints, though, and it'll likely grow on me more.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 14 January 2008 17:53 (sixteen years ago) link

ned, you are too nice. i'd say pretty unsubstantial sunny easy listening music. wahat i heard (parts of bsd and itp) was flowing along without leaving any traces. like an aussie indie mainstream. no need really to listen to any more of that boring stuff. the go-betweens were a different kind of beast.

West Australian Premier takes on fans of The Triffids

"The people who are making the complaints are former fans, or groupies or roadies of The Triffids," Mr Barnett said.

"It's not about Colin Barnett, it's not about my son Russell Barnett, it's not about the heritage value of the house, it's not about the parliament.

"It's about The Triffids! It's about the Triffids! Don't you get it? It's about the Triffids!"

Why herritage list the house where some b grade band used to practice? Most people in the country have never heard of them anyway. What makes them so special? Do we now have to list every house that every muso ever grew up in. Just because a band gets fame on Tripple J doesnt make them a great band. Commercial radio rarely if ever played them.

I've never been inspired to pick up their individual albums, "Australian Melodrama" has suited me fine. I queued up the Blackeyed Susans "Hello Stranger", haven't spun that in ages and never moved beyond that either. McComb was involved in the next one but nothing after that, right?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Monday, 5 October 2009 23:19 (fourteen years ago) link

yes, all souls alive is the last album he's involved with

there's a lot in their catalogue that australian melodrama only hints at - you would not regret investigating further

They're a little too bloodless to be classic in my book. Tasteful rock for adult critics. Perhaps they were a refreshingly cool breeze in the world of overheated Australian bloke rock. Or maybe everyone here actually liked "Tojo" by the Gurus better back in the day but is grabbing the belated chance to claim more sophisticated tastes. I know I'd rather listen to the Gurus--and at least 50 other Australian bands--before getting to these guys. That doesn't make them a dud, far from it, just not classic. If they weren't Australian (which is exotic for us non-Aussies, and a patriotic obligation for those who are), would we be having this debate? They'd be third string were they from London, right? But with a devoted cult, fittingly.

For me, the Triffids, the Chills, the Go-Betweens, were all names that flowed through the inner pages of the music press I was discovering in the late 80s, but I never had the opportunity to get my hooks into them, or vice versa. Now when I hear them I hear sounds I like, patterns I recognise, signifiers I respond to, but I just don’t have the history, the personal and musical connections, the dust of the road engrained in the folds of my skin, to really get them completely.

Nooooooooooooooo.

the Triffids aren't a high rotation band for me but about once a year a certain set of climatic/emotional conditions align and they blow my mind

particularly Stolen Property -> Tender is the Night - and Save What You Can - huge songs full of devastation and joy

interesting indifference levels on this thread - maybe it's an Australian thing, I dunno. that's fine if it is - comparing them to the Go-Betweens is weird, as if Australian bands can only be evaluated in relation to other Australian bands. understandable but doesn't provide much insight. I think perhaps the Triffids' best-known songs don't give an idea of their overall breadth and ambition

I wish I'd seen them live but I was a bit too young and as a teen I didn't really vibe with their thing - living in Sydney I would had multiple opportunities to see David and never got around to it - then I went to one of those "remaining Triffids and guest vocalists" shows a few years back and it was an amazing crash course in David McComb's body of work - great song after great song, and smart and moving arrangements too - it was like that dumb scene in Jonny Mnemonic where Keanu downloads data into his brain, suddenly I was like "oh shit, I get it!"

I know right. They got very good at closing LPs. And at casual (near-)tearjerkers that somehow creep up on you unannounced.

I was too young too but distinctly remember newspaper reviews of Calenture giving me my first sense of a special class of Bands Critics Like lol. I didn't get it at all for another decade.

It's good documentary! Goes pretty deep with home movies, etc. The focus is very much on DM, but the other members are there to speak for themselves, so it doesn't feel too hideously unbalanced.

Interesting to hear DM's move to Melbourne (the "substance abuse capital of Aus" or something lol) posited as an important factor in his downfall!
