CURRENT "BLACK FLAG" tour

Honestly, everyone predicted these shows would be terrible, seeing as Greg Ginn wasn't involved.. and it was the Rollins Band backing up Henry and Keith Morris, but it was fantastic. I encourage anyone who can, to go see these shows, I know they played Boston last night and NYC the week before.
The ticket money also goes to a good cause.
(Mine was ~20 bux)

They opened with Nervous breakdown (Morris on vocals) and the rest of the show was just a lot of fun. They played tv party, jealous again, revenge, six pack, wasted again, rise above, thirsty and miserable, gimme gimme gimme, and more.

sarah mccormick (unsarah), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:32 (twenty years ago) link

Jealous. Did they do any songs w/ Morris and Rollins?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:33 (twenty years ago) link

I've been on the fence about it... I think I'll go, just to see Keith Morris.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:34 (twenty years ago) link

You won't be sorry if you go!

Jon, I had to leave early but while i was there they didn't team up.

Perhaps during the encore.

sarah mccormick (unsarah), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:46 (twenty years ago) link

I support the cause (the West Memphis Three), but a nostalgia tour is a nostalgia tour is a nostalgia tour. I loved Black Flag (well, up through My War, anyway) and was fortunate to see them back in `86 (despite the show not being that stupendous), but this just seems like something that never should've happened....right up there with the DK's tour with Brandoz "Eddie" Cruz. Call me an idealist, but it just seems to undermine everything that was different about them in the first place.

Greg Ginn wants a reunion.

Wasn't there a link posted a couple of weeks back around here that stated Greg Ginn was getting the Flag back together to raise money for some animal group (like saving cats or something of the sort)?

Sounds like last year's Sammy Hagar/David Lee Roth tour, or the DK's without Jello, or Pete and Roger insisting they're still the Who. Sure, it's "good" (as in professionally competent and nominally entertaining), but it's still a cover band.

PS when the fuck did they become "The Flag"?

Chris Clark (Chris Clark), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:29 (twenty years ago) link

I love how Ginn is canonized for Black Flag. Seriously there's like 3 albums worth of good material with him and then it starts falling to shit. Anybody wanna hear "Loose Nut"? For that matter, how about some Gone? Mojack? Fast Gato? HOR?

He's a wanker, get over it.

Wait, aren't there two "Black Flag"s right now? The Ginn one and the Rollins one? This is almost as hilarious as when there were two Christian Deaths several years ago...(and the fact that both were signed to Cleopatra records made it even more hilarious.)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 16 June 2003 16:44 (twenty years ago) link

This is "Rollins Band playing the music of Black Flag" as opposed to "Greg Ginn and friends playing the music of Black Flag" so its not totally lame. I heard the only thing keeping the real reunion from happening is Chuck Dukowski is MIA.

"chuck" is too busy shopping at the whole foods rolling in his benzo for the rock.

what about robo and dez playing with jerry and the misfits, they play jealous again and tv party with dez on vox.

I think there's definitely an argument that says if it's not Chuck then it's not Black Flag.

Troughton-masked Replicant (aldo), Friday, 25 January 2013 11:34 (eleven years ago) link

Would agree with that argument (though I have time for Flag's post-My War LPs). Ron's a sweetheart, and the show he played for his 50th, with Ginn appearing for the encore, looked like lots of fun. But the 2003 "reunion" was so so so so very bad. Wonder if Ginn's going to use a tape recording of himself playing bass again this time.

Black Flag put up a new song for download, and if that wasn’t an odd enough sentence on its own, they also offered some fighting words for Flag. They posted “***note: not to be confused with the ‘fake’ Flag band currently covering the songs of BLACK FLAG in an embarrassingly weak “mailing it in” fashion*** We urge you to check out the real BLACK FLAG when they hit your area.”

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 22 July 2014 13:26 (nine years ago) link

Well, this Black Flag has only been playing shows since May 15. If they'd sprung up out of nowhere, I'd say, "Go see this great new hardcore-punk-funk band with a theremin." But obviously the songbook is central and inescapable. If anything, Mike seems slightly wary of the audience, maybe for that reason, and hides in the songs. But the difference from the lineup of a year ago (at least judging by Youtube) becomes obvious on a song like "Depression," where the new drummer actually plays the fill.

Peter Scholtes, Tuesday, 22 July 2014 16:03 (nine years ago) link

one year passes...

Flag were so great last night. I've never slamdanced with such a grin on my face. I didn't realize how badly I needed to hear "Rise Above" live.

I started a "Fuck Greg Ginn" chant after Keith Morris said "we're being forced to tour under this name because of the way we were treated by this one complete asshole" or something like that.

do they always put the setlist in a very visible place on the drum kit? that was a little weird, knowing in advance the songs....probably to stop fanboys from shouting out requests

Neanderthal, Monday, 11 July 2016 12:43 (seven years ago) link

Hmm I have been debating going to see Flag in August but wasn't sure as it isn't cheap.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Monday, 11 July 2016 13:24 (seven years ago) link

yeah I saw em a couple years ago on the first tour and honestly I was so happy it "felt" like Black Flag in a way I doubt any of these official Ginn weird lineups did.....the Descendents dude had Ginn's guitar sound and riffs DOWN

Steve Gunn Mann-Dude (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 11 July 2016 14:11 (seven years ago) link

Setlist large and visible, well if you were upfront in DC. A great oldies but goodies set from Flag.

going to see Black Flag (w/ Ginn) tonight. if i had a choice between Flag and Black Flag I'd probably choose Flag, mostly because my "fuck Greg Ginn" chant wouldn't get me thrown out of that show, and well....Ginn is a dicknugget. But I don't and I want to hear these songs. so I'll tell you if it's terrible. apparently no more theremin solos though so...there's...that.

Ginn sounds fine. Vallely is a charisma vacuum of a vocalist, the sound was quieter than the opening act, and all half the crowd did was stand around and film it

Rhoda from Steubenville (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 03:55 (four years ago) link

Keith Morris is pretty scathing about being involved in the original reunion with Ginn as Black Flag.
Says Ginn wanted to slow down tempos on everything. & saw Korn as a model for what a band should sound like.

Also that he went in expecting Chuck Dukowski and other exmembers to join but Ginn was against that from the start.
In fact seems weird that rin reyes would agree to apparently replace him. Might have thought he would have heard the negative from somewhere before joining.

Stevolende, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 05:08 (four years ago) link

lol. i did feel like a few tempos were slower. some people were going nuts over the music and i'm like far be it for me to like shit on something you like but my god, Ginn could have died onstage and I'd not noticed a difference.

but dear lord he could really improve things tenfold just by HIRING BACK ONE OF HIS ORIGINAL FRONTMEN, omg, Vallely sucks and he's also 3 feet tall so I couldn't see him over people's heads half the night

Rhoda from Steubenville (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 05:31 (four years ago) link

How many of his original frontmen would want the job at this point, seeing how Reyes was treated

I'm pretty sure I'd rather see the Chuck Dukowski Sextet live than GinnFlag

Corduroy Stridulations (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 06:03 (four years ago) link

Yeah you would. I had so much more fun at Flag. I'd rather listen to farts than Ginn

Rhoda from Steubenville (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 06:34 (four years ago) link

I don't think Mike Vallely is short. Google says he's 5' 10".

More importantly, googling that led me to his skate videos, which are just as great as I remember.

JRN, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 06:49 (four years ago) link

It was probably a perspective issue with the stage, which wasn't raised much. From where i was standing, Ginn didn't look tall but I remembered he's like 6'5 or something. So Vallely obv would have looked much shorter in comparison despite not being Danzig-sized.

So I'll strike my fake news height comments, but vocals are definitely not his thing. He wasn't unusually bad, but it sounded like karaoke. Everybody could play their instruments but it felt so perfunctory.

The songs that worked best were post-My War tunes

Lol this one is at a craft beer bar.
When he played around here a few months ago, it was at a place outside of town I'd never heard of before that is both a "cantina" and a "rockin' sushi bar". Which might not be so bad - I dont want to disparage this place I've never been! It is apparently the place where versions of old hair metal and nu metal bands stop in, so Stryper, L.A. Guns, Lynch Mob, Great White, and (hed)pe have all made regular tour stops there in recent years, according to setlists.fm

☮️ (peace, man), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 11:56 (four years ago) link

FLAG is actually pretty damn good, aged and cobbled together as it is. Saw em last year and had a lot of fun. Descendent’s guitarist totally nails the classic Ginn guitar sound, gnarly ass solos and all.

I’ve heard nothing but sad things about the “Black Flag” incarnation.

circa1916, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 23:16 (four years ago) link

that's the other thing, Keith talked to the crowd. there was no communication with the crowd last night. not once.

the guitar also was very clean sounding. if the guitar was dialed down a smidge more, I'd have been at a Minutemen show. which is great, if they're The Minutemen playing Minutemen songs, not so much when you're a noisy-meedly-weedly punk band

Rhoda from Steubenville (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 23:17 (four years ago) link

but the thing that made me leave was the constant stream of assholes who kept rudely shoving (or trying to shove) by me to get to the front, until I spread my shoulders and cut off all entry points behind me. how the hell can you watch a show when you're constantly having your space invaded? only to come back minutes later so you have to do the whole charade again.

that's more a discussion for the show etiquette thread though.

Rhoda from Steubenville (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 23:19 (four years ago) link

Also, in regards to the ‘peace, man’ post, Fish Head Cantina is about as lame and shitty as you would expect it to be. The fact that the Ginn & Crew version were playing there told me enough about what to expect.

circa1916, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 23:29 (four years ago) link

lol. I liked the place last night, but it's a place you go to have good beer with friends near the beach. it's horrible for a concert.

the place they're playing this weekend? a local Cafe/restaurant that has poker games and is equally awkward. these are teh places they're playing.

Flag, on the other hand, played the State Theater in St Pete and the shit sold out or damn close.

Rhoda from Steubenville (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 23:39 (four years ago) link

You would think. It might also be intentional on Ginn's part. They just got announced as playing this big festival here in Sept that fuckin Judas Priest is playing at so clearly the ability is there.

But on the other hand, sales are so shit to Saturday's show, the owner of the venue walked into one of my best friends' cat cafes and just gave him two tickets (which are going for $35 even though it's literally at a restaurant).

yeah "Gimme Gimme Gimme" was loud and raucous at Flag.

yesterday it was 30% slower than usual and it sounded like four people dicking around on it at a Sam Ash.

I also left because I refused to hear them mangle "Rise Above" or "Damaged I". they were just getting to "Six Pack" when I was leaving and someone screamed 'THIS IS THE SHIT THAT STARTED IT ALL' but he was in the bar and you can barely hear or see the show from there so...i had no idea why he was excited.
