Are they as horrible as we have been told, or should I pick them up if I find them in a dusty rekkid case at the flea market...

you really don't need them. unless you are a completist or are so curious that you can't stop yourself or the very perverse idea of two bands putting out albums without their original guiding forces is intriguing to you on a historical level. but really, they are both pretty dudsville. search instead: The Spiders From Mars & The Billion Dollar Babies. Much more entertaining.

fuck just BUY them. Pay any price, they're worth it! Don't bother to 'shop around', just take the first ones offered! Get them in mint condition too.

two years pass...

i got a copy of *Hear & Now* by the *BUTTS BAND* today, Krieger & Densmore's soul-ish, stax-ish, rock-ish 1975 album and it isn't half bad! Two singers, male & female, and some killer-ass break beats. And some really nice guitar solos.
