Just threw on the first Rufus Wainwright today -- such a fantastically gay production. RW will likely never top it.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I only really know his work on Brad Mehldau's Largo, but it's so classic. His drums are so dirty.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

When the Pawn, obv.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, if Fiona's obv., Aimee Mann's gotta be, too. And his solo record is really good.

Any word on those Robyn Hitchcock records?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

bleah. I've hated all the Aimee Mann I've heard strictly due to the production. I have the same problem with the new Badly Drawn Boy and the last Elliott Smith, which he didn;t produce, but was involved in. There's something about stuff he touches that seems too... obvious. I don't know what it is, but I dislike it.

I have the same problem with Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf, who work with him a lot. i may tend to lump them together. They've yet to do anything I've really liked and, I would argue, totally wrecked Richard Thompson's 'Mock Tudor'.

Is Matthew Hilburn the son of Robert Hilburn?

wl (wl), Thursday, 24 July 2003 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno, I really like his sound. it's lush and slick, but still unique and, in my opinion, not too obvious or bland. I've been meaning to check out his solo record. I heard a live set once, I think on Morning Becomes Eclectic, and was pretty intrigued.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 24 July 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Matthew Hilburn the son of Robert Hilburn?

I've heard the elder Hilburn -- allegedly -- tried to scam a record deal for an offspring of his some years back, so maybe this is him.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 July 2003 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Brion's solo record is quite good. Not your typical producer's vanity project at all. You can get it through artist direct, I think...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 24 July 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

It's very lush and slick, true... very, very polished, and just a bit camp. Which all make sit very easy on the ear, but not in the bad MOR sense; it helps that he tends to work with quality people with either lyrics or melody edgy enough to counterbalance the sheen.

I have a copy of the soundtrack he did for... for... er, Punch-Drunk Love I think? It's also very pleasant, but it doesn't inspire me to check out his solo stuff.

Alex Macpherson (The Lex), Thursday, 24 July 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
I've just seen I ♥ Huckabees. At times it was like David. O. Russell and Jon Brion were in competition to be the main event. That sounds like a criticism for a score, but I don't mean it to be. It was fabulous, as was the film.

What happened to my heart?

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

has the rest of that fiona apple album leaked anywhere yet?

(xpost: your heart shows up in my browser).

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe it's a fire Firefox FLAW.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

fire Firefox? Whhaat?

I'm going to listen to 'Extraordinary Machine' again now. I'd also like to know if anything else has leaked. But much as I love Fiona Apple, right now I just want the Huckabees soundtrack.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know if he produced it, but I know he had a hand in the writing and arrangement (and, I think, chamberlain playing) on Macy Gray's "I Try," which is an awesome single.
His stuff in all the PT Anderson movies is great (I love the fucked-up carnival sounds from "Boogie Nights"), and it was my favorite part of Huckabees.

Chuckling at the Tomkat's Marquee (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Eww - he did 'I Try'? I do not like that.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Honestly, I'm kind of amazed this guy doesn't get more love on ILM. He's metapop to the max.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 25 November 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I love him. I think he's a genius.

papa november (papa november), Thursday, 25 November 2004 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Thursday, 25 November 2004 05:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I've had that "Huckabees" theme in my head the last couple of days.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Thursday, 25 November 2004 05:12 (twenty-one years ago)

When I dream of being a wonderful music producer, I am the female jon brion.

papa november (papa november), Thursday, 25 November 2004 07:58 (twenty-one years ago)

'punch-drunk love' remains wonderful. I watched it with my parents recently and they said they just couldn't understand what was going on.

cºzen (Cozen), Thursday, 25 November 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the Punch-Drunk Love soundtrack (and film). I play 'Le Petit Chateau' a lot.

But I Heart Huckabees is better.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 25 November 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Y'all have read this, haven't you?

http://www.furious.com/perfect/jonbrion.html

Anybody been there?

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 25 November 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Shall we compile a Jon Brion compilation then? If so, what should lead it off? Perhaps his Revolver-ized cover of "Sorry Suzanne" on The Hollies tribute album?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 25 November 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd love you all to. Collaborations aside, I don't know anything beyond his film soundtracks.

From them, my favourites are:

From Punch Drunk Love
'Overture'
'He Needs Me' (vocal: Shirley Duvall)
'Punch Drunk Melody'
'Le Petit Chateau'

From Eternal Sunshine Of A Spotless Mind

'Phone Call'

Probably others - that's the one I downloaded especially.

From I Heart Huckabees

'Monday' (the recurring theme)
'Knock Yourself Out' (Brion singing, but great for a change)
'Strange Bath'
'Omni' (God I love it when this comes on in the film. As with 'Knock Yourself Out', it's very Elliot Smith indeed).

I haven't got anything from Magnolia. I'm trying to remember the music, beyond the Aimee Mann tracks.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 25 November 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

'I heart huckabees' will have to be a very good (to excellent) film to be better than - my baby! - 'punch-drunk love'. it looked a bit andy kaufman from the trailer : /

cºzen (Cozen), Thursday, 25 November 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I loved it. I don't really know Kaufman so I couldn't comment on the comparison. It's the kind of thing that, if it doesn't speak to you, then it's just 'quirky', but if it does, then seems to cut quite deep.

It's also very funny.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 25 November 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Chalk me up as another one who loved Punch Drunk Love and the attendant music. This thread compelled me to buy When The Pawn... when I saw it cheap yesterday.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 25 November 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

As with 'Knock Yourself Out', it's very Elliot Smith indeed).

Duh! After a while, 'Omni' is a return to the melody of 'Knock Yourself out', so this isn't surprising.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 25 November 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you listened to When The Pawn... yet, Tim? I love it. I've still never heard anything like 'Fast As You Can', and 'I Know' is one of my favourite ever closing songs.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 25 November 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

matt chamberlain is a great drummer

chaki in charge (chaki), Thursday, 25 November 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"Have you listened to When The Pawn... yet, Tim? I love it. I've still never heard anything like 'Fast As You Can', and 'I Know' is one of my favourite ever closing songs. "

I was already familiar with "Fast As You Can" (plus I had Tidal already) and had almost bought the album on any number of occasions. On the first listen the album is very good, almost claustrophobically dense and intentionally consistent stylistically like Fiona is worried that you'll miss the point if she tries to make it in more ways than one (I mean this as a compliment I think).

It reminds me of Veda Hille's Spine and Maria McKee's Life Is Sweet (both of which match my description above), in terms of overall mood if not always style. Veda for the claustrophobia and production tricks and occasional hints of non-specific archaism. Maria for the melodrama and flashes of sweetness through bitterness.

Specific comparisons for "Fast As You Can" are harder, I think.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 25 November 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

almost claustrophobically dense and intentionally consistent stylistically like Fiona is worried that you'll miss the point if she tries to make it in more ways than one (I mean this as a compliment I think).

This is very well put, I think.

For a taster of the I Heart Huckabees soundtrack, have a look over at my post on The thread for gmail offers and requests

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 25 November 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

From Punch Drunk Love
'He Needs Me' (vocal: Shirley Duvall)

I love that song too, but it's entirely a Harry Nilsson song (arranged by Van Dyke Parks) from the Popeye movie.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 26 November 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah - I see.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

For the Greatest Hits collection I nominate the leadoff track from Aimee Mann's Whatever, "I Should've Known."

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 26 November 2004 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah man, "here we go" from PDL sums up Jon Brion in one shot.

Just Kate (papa november), Friday, 26 November 2004 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

So you are suggesting a one song "Greatest Hit" collection?

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 26 November 2004 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a bold approach.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, just as an opener.

Although it would be an interesting addition to my lame joke when a band releases a greatest hits and I remark, "what? a blank CD?"

Just Kate (papa november), Friday, 26 November 2004 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, then -- "Sorry Suzanne" is Track 2.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 26 November 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Where would "I believe she's lying" fit? It's a popular one but I don't happen to like it much myself.

Just Kate (papa november), Friday, 26 November 2004 05:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The final (and to my mind the best) track on the current Marianne Faithfull album - "City Of Quartz" - sets MF's lyrics to JB's music, in a Gothic nursery-rhyme arrangement which is mostly based around clock ticks and chimes. Works much better than all those half-assed PJ Harvey collaborations...

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 26 November 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

His films scores are a blight on the land. I am almost as over Jon Brion as I am Thomas Newman.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 26 November 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba sums it up pretty much, even if its meant as a compliment. I can't think of many scores that have been as intensely distracting and as movie-hijacking as those of Brion... not many since Bernstein's On the Waterfront music.

(I should note that both Brion's music as well as the Waterfront suite sound quite good standing alone, but irritate me to no end when I witness them fighting tooth and nail to avoid being integrated into the fabric of the films they are supposed to be complimenting.)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 26 November 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I think we need to be open to a different models of film/soundtrack relationships.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm open to different models of film/soundtrack relationships, just not ones where I perceive the soundtrack composer to be attempting to "transcend" the film. That's just ruinous, in my opinion.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 26 November 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

But is it Brion trying to bum-rush the screen or is it the director's "choice"? What's the song that all the characters sing a different verse of in Magnolia, is it called "Wise Up"? Brion couldn't make him shoot the different characters singing and then cut to each of them, could he? The "other" Anderson, Wes, apparently had a problem in the first cut of The Royal Tenenbaums where the non-original parts of the soundtrack stood out too much. After the first round of criticism at the NY Film Festival I think, he cut back on this.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 26 November 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Ultimately it is the director's choice whether or not to use what their score composer offers them, you're right about that. But, and I can't believe I'm making this analogy as a more-or-less auteurist, that's sort of like blaming the chef at a restaurant for bad weather on the patio. (Here's where I obligatorily admit that I don't much care for P.T. Anderson as a chef.)

And yes, Brion is clearly attempting to bum-rush the screen. Thanks for putting better than I could've myself.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 26 November 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Thing is, Paul Thomas Anderson obviously didn't mind Brion's "attempt to transcend the film" approach, as he asked him back to do Punch Drunk Love. Assuming he had the say on who did the soundtrack. Maybe that's a wrong assumption.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry - Ken kind of said that already, better.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, and I reiterate that I hold P.T. Anderson in suspect as much as I do Brion.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 26 November 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

But David O. Russell can do no wrong!

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't seen I Liver Huckabees, so I can't say whether or not Russell knows what must be done with Brion...

It's worth noting that Russell's (and two others') Solders Pay has no music at all.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 26 November 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

What has the guy been up to lately? He seems a bit in the wilderness, like Mitchell Froom when he stamp went out of vogue.

One of the best Brion solo shows I saw had him doing side two of Eno's "Here Come the Warm Jets" from memory. Also this: http://rob.by/2008/jon-brion-does-bruce-springsteen/

Seems like he's been working pretty steadily.

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 19 June 2013 22:55 (twelve years ago)

A lot of those productions, like Katy Perry, were just sort of one-track deals or remixes. One track with Ferreira, one track with Spoon, one track with Keane, etc. He did most of that Dido, that Of Montreal, the Best Coast, but the rest of his behind the boards work mostly seems to be pals like Mehldau and Thile. Been a while since he worked on stuff in his wheelhouse: Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple, Robyn Hitchcock, songwriters with guitars. Maybe that's been by design?

Didn't know he did the scores to "ParaNorman" or "This is Forty."

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 19 June 2013 23:54 (twelve years ago)

You're right -- a lot of it is just one track (including This Is Forty). Part of me wonders if its a combination of him doing more soundtrack work and maybe his style falling out of favor a bit.

Naive Teen Idol, Thursday, 20 June 2013 10:58 (twelve years ago)

five years pass...

It's been, well, five years, and once again I've been wondering what Brion is up to. Seems like steady film score work, but I was surprised to see he did some work on the most recent Beyonce, Janelle Monae and Mac Miller albums. Also, according to wiki, he opened one of John Mulvaney's recent tours, often playing in-house pipe organ.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 28 February 2019 13:08 (seven years ago)
