Obvious humongoustores: Virgin & FNAC on the Champs Elysées, and another FNAC in Les Halles.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 02:13 (twenty years ago) link

anyone care to tell me about good stores in the 10e, the 9e, and Montmarte?

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 03:33 (twenty years ago) link

Alex, do you read a little French?

Go to http://www.novaplanet.com, click "Entrée" -
it'll launch a huge window.

From the top of that window, there's a Musique link. Click that, and a new list shows up; at the far left is "Disquaires de Paris."
And there you go. They also have a monthly magazine sold at the kiosks, w/lots of show/event listings.

I recommend Bimbo Tower (not a lot but wow is it something..), Wave Records on the Rue Keller. There is also - not listed in the Nova guide 'cause they are huge, but the selection is good! - the Gibert Joseph on the Boulevard Saint-Michel right across from the Cluny La Sorbonne metro stop. Gibert Joseph has about three stores right there, only one of them is music, but it's great. Also FNAC, the huge chain, has a record shop in the 9th on a major boulevard; there's also a FNAC record shop at the Bastille metro.

I used to live in the 10e and there is actually not a lot there as far as record shopping (but I love it! go walk around the canal Saint Martin! great cafes, no tourists!), you'll have better luck in the 11e to just walk from shop to shop.
(If you go looking for some of the shops on the Nova list get yourself a little book w/a Paris by arrondissement map because otherwise you WILL get lost. Even with a map I still had trouble finding Bimbo Tower.)

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 06:32 (twenty years ago) link

As Daria says, your only pitstop should be Gibert Joseph on bvd. St. Michel. Get Marcel Grospig Jr. to take you there..

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 06:39 (twenty years ago) link

there's a great place in montmartre amateurist (actually it's more like barbes, at the foot of the mount), let me see if I can figure out exactly where it is...

PS FNAC ain't half bad

s1utsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 17:53 (twenty years ago) link

Don't go to the stores. Go to the flea market south of Montmartre (I don't have a metro map but I believe the stop you want is Porte de Clignancourt -- think it's on the purple line?). Used record sellers there sometimes have amazing vinyl. CD stores? Ridiculously expensive. You'd think the French though CDs were all imported from Planet X.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Thursday, 28 August 2003 02:00 (twenty years ago) link

I think you mean north of Montmartre no?

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 28 August 2003 02:14 (twenty years ago) link

I like FNAC. Some the branches have book stores.

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 28 August 2003 03:01 (twenty years ago) link

most are combo book/music/BD/tix stores

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 28 August 2003 03:39 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah Bimbo Tower is v. good, they have a friendly guy behind the counter who played me weird French 7"s for an hour.

Hanna (Hanna), Thursday, 28 August 2003 07:56 (twenty years ago) link

colette

nick.K (nick.K), Thursday, 28 August 2003 08:33 (twenty years ago) link

i will put bimbo tower on my to-do list. that's a terrible name for a store, though.

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:05 (twenty years ago) link

Katapult. It's near Republique, and stocks fantastic French techno from the likes of Ark, Cabanne, Krikor, et al, plus shitloads of Perlon, Kompakt, etc. Lots of techno, some house, some electroclash, a bit of hip hop, plus all the Pepe Bradock you've been looking for forever. Worth a trip!

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Thursday, 28 August 2003 16:51 (twenty years ago) link

where is the best place to find vinyl of older (pre-60s) french pop music? and where is the best place to find african music (aside from street markets)?

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 28 August 2003 17:05 (twenty years ago) link

one month passes...
I'm going in two weeks to Paris. I was there in `87, and I remember stumbling upon a little Punk place called L'EVASION. Anyone remember it/know it/know if it's still there?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 3 October 2003 00:57 (twenty years ago) link

Ecoute Ce Disque (12, rue Simon-Le-Franc, near the Pompidou centre) is good for 60s stuff, if a trifle pricey. Paralleles on Rue St Honore is OK too.

harveyw (harveyw), Friday, 3 October 2003 08:32 (twenty years ago) link

There's a place on Blvd Saint Germain (near Jussieu) that wraps your CDs in a sealed paper envelope for you, so you get to open them again later!

adaml (adaml), Friday, 3 October 2003 08:45 (twenty years ago) link

revive

i went to a jazz store (it said "jazz and blues" on the awning but there were no blues cds to speak of) near jussieu and it mostly sucked. i am quite snobby about the parisian fetishizing of certain american musics here. the only advantage so far is that the compilations on the fremeaux label are cheaper here (sometimes) than in the states.

p.s. s1utsky i met a guy from montreal here. he is nice.

amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 5 October 2003 12:39 (twenty years ago) link

amat. is it the store which is actually two stores, one for the vocal jazz and the other one for the rest. I kinda like it, they've got a lot of incunabula and guy at the firt store is more than cool (he's american if i make no mistake).

- Bruno, Sunday, 5 October 2003 12:51 (twenty years ago) link

no that's not it--which is the name of the one you're speaking of?

they did have special sections for free jazz labels like PSF and so forth. unfortunately i'm not too interested in that sort of thing.

i found it quite by accident, wandering around jussieu while waiting for a movie theater to open.

amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 5 October 2003 15:47 (twenty years ago) link

This sounds like Croco-Disque / Croco-jazz on rue des Ecoles.

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Monday, 6 October 2003 08:41 (twenty years ago) link

no it's "Paris Jazz Corner" rue de navarre

-Bruno, Friday, 10 October 2003 16:01 (twenty years ago) link

where the hell is bimbo tower? because I spent and hour looking for it this spring and could not find it. shitty time out guide listed it and the address, but neglected to put that street in their map. i wandered all over the area and couldn't locate it. Is it in some weird little alcove square behind one of those gates or something?

There's a great store in Paris for '60s-type stuff, and also scuz/punk/rockabilly vinyl. I got a *great* pink vinyl comp of '60s girl singers called "Swinging Mademoiselle Vol. 1." I forget altogether where the store is, though. It had a kind of campy name. It might have been called Rock Paradise.

scott m (mcd), Friday, 10 October 2003 16:31 (twenty years ago) link

With a little googlism I got this:

"*Rock Paradise, Patrick Renassia, 10 Rue Bailleul 75001 Paris, Nearest Metro Station - LOUVRE, Phone No. 47 03 36 35. Fax No. 47 03 34 79. Opening Hours: Mon. 2pm - 7pm - Tues - Sat 11am - 7pm. Highly Recommended. Very smart and well laid out shop with wide selection of Vinyl records. Also large selection of professional drawings of R & R stars."

Found the flyer for the record shop I'd discussed earlier, for those who give a merde:

L'EVASION: Collector's 60's. 70's. Punk. New Wave.
145 Rue de Vaugirard 75015 Paris. tel.566.74.38

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 October 2003 17:16 (twenty years ago) link

this flyer is pretty old.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 October 2003 17:31 (twenty years ago) link

i suppose

there's a rockabilly-themed store just down the block from where i worked, it's funny to go into a store selling such quintessentially american music and hear a bunch of guys chatting about it in french. anyway, it's k-overpriced (even by french standards) so i'm giving it a wide berth in the future.

i'm proud that i've only gone record shopping twice since i've been here.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 10 October 2003 17:49 (twenty years ago) link

i will put bimbo tower on my to-do list. that's a terrible name for a store, though.

It's a great name for a store! Doesn't it sound like 'Virgin Megastore' run through inaccurate web translation software?

As for where it is, find the Pause Cafe

41, rue de Charonne Paris 75011

Have a pastis on the terrace. Then cross the street. You will see a dead-end street called Passage Saint Antoine. Bimbo Tower is down towards the (dead) end, on the left. Number 5.

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 11 October 2003 08:04 (twenty years ago) link

Just got back from a week in Paris this evening, and had GREAT time. Thanks to the Momus directions above, I managed to find my way to BIMBO TOWER (and I can clearly see how it eluded many, as it's really pretty well hidden). Like others have said, it's teeny tiny, but they pack the place with all sorts of ephemera (not just music related). It's a bit of a geek's paradise, as its brewing with all sorts of odd material (Japaense toys, odd fanzines, t-shirts, totschke, etc.) Didn't find anything too mind blowing (wasn't looking for anything specific actually), but picked up a Rough Trade Post-Punk compilation just to show my support.

Stopped into a couple of FNAC's, which were pretty respectable, in a mega-store sorta way. Also stopped into "Lucky Records", just a block or two behind the Pompidou. It really wasn't my scene, but if you're at all a Madonna fan, this is the place for you, as the place is packed from floor to ceiling with Madge rareities.

Saw John "Duran" Taylor at Les Deux Magot with some pissy woman with two-tone hair. Got him to sign my coffee receipt, which he happily did. A hecka-swell fella, him.

Revive.

Going to Paris in March, any new stores, or updates to this thread?

I understand there are some nonpareil African music specialty shops in Paris. Any tips?

scott m (mcd), Monday, 19 January 2004 15:14 (twenty years ago) link

When I said revive I meant, uh.

I didn't realize those last posts were from today as I just did a search for the thread, etc. Strange. Anyway.

scott m (mcd), Monday, 19 January 2004 15:21 (twenty years ago) link

What do you mean by 'nonpareil'? Your best bet is to walk around the Barbes/Chateau Rouge area and look around.

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Monday, 19 January 2004 15:27 (twenty years ago) link

I mean "unequaled" or "excellent."

scott m (mcd), Monday, 19 January 2004 15:34 (twenty years ago) link

i went to bimbo tower

i liked the idea of the place, and i guess in theory id like supporting it, but (a) it is too small to shop comfortably when there are more than 4 people in the place; and (b) i sort of felt when i was there, as though i had fallen down some rabbit hole of contemporary culture, where people hide for fear of the sunlight. everything in the store--its aesthetic i guess, when taken all together--seemed to have only in common its incredible and (usually wilfull) estrangement from the mainstream. that estrangement in itself isnt problematic but when it becomes the glue that binds your taste together it begins to strike me as.... well, i'll keep this personal, i find it boring and exhausting.

whats funniest about this is the only thing i found to buy was in the used bin and was ridiculously cheap, so obviously the bimbo tower clientele had not taken a shine to it

Anywhere particularly good for cheap second-hand French pop CDs / vinyl these days?
