Captain Sensible- "Croydon"!!!!!!!!!!!

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Monday, 20 October 2003 11:48 (twenty years ago) link

Not "London" as such, though, is it?

"Camden Town" by Suggs is the worst single ever made by anybody. Especially that bit where he goes "MADNESS in the air," you know, MADNESS in bold double underlined italics, you know I used to be in a group called MADNESS...

Otherwise there's "Finchley Central" by the New Vaudeville Band, "Portobello Road" by Cat Stevens and of course the immortal "Dick-A-Dum-Dum (King's Road)" by Des O'Connor. Or "Wimbledon Lawns" by Jo Durie. Or indeed "Sunny Goodge Street" by Donovan.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 20 October 2003 11:52 (twenty years ago) link

"Wellington goes to Waterloo", "To Wimbledon with love" and "Wimbledon sunset" by the Wombles. The latter is one of the loveliest most bittersweet pieces of music you'll ever hear.

Elvis Costello - I Don't Wanna go to Chelsea
The Jam - Down in the Tube Station at Midnight
Nick Cave - Brompton Oratory

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 20 October 2003 12:06 (twenty years ago) link

Anyway, as regards Peter Gabriel, didn't his Genesis do "The Battle Of Epping Forest"?

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 20 October 2003 12:07 (twenty years ago) link

some Boo-titles (I was afraid to post before because I was worried that some of these were in Liverpool or elsewhere, but screw it, correct me if I'm wrong): "The Old Newsstand at Hamilton Square," "Upon 9th and Fairchild," "Fairfax Scene," "Blue Room in Archway"

Well, the last one is London. Hamilton Square is in Birkenhead (and "From The Bench At Belvedere" is a Wallasey reference), the other two are either fictional or US references, I suspect.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 20 October 2003 13:20 (twenty years ago) link

Russell, but Bethnal Green is, right? "The Battle of Epping Forest" has some references to London sites within its lyrics...

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Monday, 20 October 2003 16:44 (twenty years ago) link

Bethnal Green is in ancient Essex, but it was in the former LCC area, so I suppose it qualifies.

russell grant (robin carmody), Monday, 20 October 2003 16:53 (twenty years ago) link

Carter USM, "Twenty-Four Minutes to Tulse Hill"
Pogues, "White City"

Ben Dot (1977), Monday, 20 October 2003 17:16 (twenty years ago) link

London is not the only city in the world to have a West end. And definitely not the only city in the world to have subway stations :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 08:05 (twenty years ago) link

Gomez's song isn't about Piccadilly London. It's about a train journey between Manchester and Sheffield, so I assume it's Piccadilly Sataion, Manchester.
First line is: "Once upon a time, not too long ago,
We took a day out in Manchester"

London is not the only city in the world to have a West end

Technically yes, but how many cities have a well-known neighborhood or region called the "West End"? London's the only one I can think of.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 21:02 (twenty years ago) link

For that matter, what other cities besides London have "tube stations" (that are called "tube stations")?
