What? No "All Mine" from the Curiosities cassette? Bah Humbug!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 8 November 2003 12:01 (twenty years ago) link

and why include all the stuff that's on 'Japanese Whispers'?

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Saturday, 8 November 2003 12:03 (twenty years ago) link

and NO 'cats like cheese, english rose, weedy burton'??

kephm, Saturday, 8 November 2003 15:33 (twenty years ago) link

I have all this already! waaaaah!

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 8 November 2003 16:00 (twenty years ago) link

I thought from the start that most of the good stuff would be on the 2nd discs of the remasters (Faith/Carnage Visors).

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Saturday, 8 November 2003 16:10 (twenty years ago) link

That's shit. I was well excited about that, I thought it was going to new/rarer stuff.

darn.

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Saturday, 8 November 2003 16:23 (twenty years ago) link

Baaderist, technically Japanese Whispers was a compilation only available outside the UK. It's sort of ridiculous that they'd treat it as a "rarity," but...at least we get the "Lament" flexipop and (hopefully!) the 12" mix of "Just One Kiss".

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Saturday, 8 November 2003 16:32 (twenty years ago) link

to the sky, finally. this has pretty much everything I'd want that I don't already have on CD. I'm happy enough. Although the last cd is probably cack.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Saturday, 8 November 2003 16:36 (twenty years ago) link

Most of what I do have of this is on mp3, which is enjoyable enough. But I like the idea of a formal set. The one thing that strikes me as missing is "Spilt Milk," a 2000 track that surfaced as part of some web promo thing, I think. It's an absolutely lovely song that both Dan and I really enjoyed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 8 November 2003 16:54 (twenty years ago) link

"Spilt Milk" is the best thing he's done since Wish; I liked "Out of This World" as well. We only get one version of "To the Sky" and two each of "Hello I Love You" and "Purple Haze"? No "Primary (Red Mix)", no "Japanese Dream" 12" mix (the real crime)...of course I'll buy it but there are some odd choices here. Especially gievn that the last disc is, as Tony Kyle put it, "cack".

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Saturday, 8 November 2003 17:24 (twenty years ago) link

"10.15 Saturday Night" is a nice dig at Bill Parry though.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Saturday, 8 November 2003 17:25 (twenty years ago) link

Yes some odd choices really. I'm also surpised not to see the 'Lost Wishes' track, but probably they'll appear on the Wish remaster.

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Saturday, 8 November 2003 18:30 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, my thought is that there's a hell of a lot of rarities, known and unknown, which will appear for each individual remaster. I'm not worried about it, there's plenty of time and disc space. I note that "Ariel" is unsurprisingly not named, yet.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 8 November 2003 18:32 (twenty years ago) link

Unsurprisingly? You think he's still saving it for that imminent solo album..?

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Saturday, 8 November 2003 18:37 (twenty years ago) link

Oh heavens no. I just think it won't come out until he's dead.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 8 November 2003 18:40 (twenty years ago) link

"Ariel" is awful, but, not worse than "Throw Your Foot" or "A Man Inside my Mouth". I wonder if it'll be available on the remaster of Pornography since that Kid Jensen session was from '82.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Saturday, 8 November 2003 23:38 (twenty years ago) link

"A Man Inside My Mouth" is hands down one of the best things they ever did!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 8 November 2003 23:40 (twenty years ago) link

I think you meant to say "The Baby Screams" Ned.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Saturday, 8 November 2003 23:41 (twenty years ago) link

They're both grand.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 8 November 2003 23:49 (twenty years ago) link

Ohmygod "the Baby Screams" is so fuckin' good it makes me want to throw all my kitchen utensils into the street and declare war on my neighbors.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 9 November 2003 00:08 (twenty years ago) link

Join the Dots is really just compiling all the "unreleased on cd" b sides plus a few rarities. All the other stuff (Lost Wishes etc) are going to be made available on the remastered cd's.

flowersdie (flowersdie), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:51 (twenty years ago) link

Fucking hell, my prayers have been answered at last! Is this out in time for me to ask for it for Christmas? Looks amazing, thought I fear the 4th CD will be fairly neglected by me.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:16 (twenty years ago) link

I fear I have ruined my pants.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:19 (twenty years ago) link

I really wish they would make World War easily obtainable. (Not that it's the best song ever .. but when you can't seem to get something easily, you want it all the more. Remember how everyone used to want to drink Coors and Fosters before their distribution was good?)

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:29 (twenty years ago) link

B-b-but "World War" is one of the best songs ever!

My biggest gripe: THREE versions of "Hello I Love You" and TWO versions of "Purple Haze", but no "Let's Go To Bed (Milk Mix)" or "Spilt Milk"?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:36 (twenty years ago) link

I didn't say I didn't love it .. just that that's not the reason I think it should be more easily available.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:37 (twenty years ago) link

but no "Let's Go To Bed (Milk Mix)" or "Spilt Milk"?

I figure the former will be on a remastered Mixed Up bonus disc and the latter with Bloodflowers similarly.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:45 (twenty years ago) link

whats this about remastered single discs?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:57 (twenty years ago) link

Remastered two-disc sets of The Cure's albums and surrounding "rarities" are coming out starting in 2004 with Pornography, Disintegration and Bloodflowers. I have no idea what could possibly on the second discs for these albums after seeing this tracklisting.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:21 (twenty years ago) link

The individual albums are to be rereleased as well and the running story is that said albums will each include a further bonus disc with demos and other rarities associated with each release. (Alternately, what Chris said, but again, there are tons of bootleg demos that have floated around, Lost Wishes, many stellar live tracks, etc.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:26 (twenty years ago) link

They should do an era-specific version of "Forever" for each remastered disc.

(Where is "See The Children"??? "Desperate Journalist"??? etc???)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:32 (twenty years ago) link

They should do an era-specific version of "Forever" for each remastered disc.

Haha!

A double disc set of nothing but live versions of "A Forest" over the years would be genius. "FUCK ROBERT PALMER FUCK ROCK AND ROLL!" Like Palmer could complain about that now, he's dead.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:34 (twenty years ago) link

DO NOT TAUNT ROBERT PALMER HE HAS POWERS BEYOND THE GRAVE.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:41 (twenty years ago) link

The Evil Dead 4 now has a plot.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:45 (twenty years ago) link

That's such an embarrassing moment...The Cure try to be "hard."

Live tracks? That would be pathetic, but, I guess you could tack Entreat onto Disintegration and get away with it. Lost Wishes is only four songs, mediocre instrumentals at that...NED WHAT CAN THEY DO FOR US AFTER ALL THESE YEARS.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:58 (twenty years ago) link

Live tracks? That would be pathetic

Er? Man, there are so many great live tracks I've heard from all the incarnations of the band, I'd love to hear more and/or more clearly. Things like Smith's freakout on the 'Tiananmen' version of "Faith" and all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:00 (twenty years ago) link

The extra disc for _The Top_ should be 20 different versions of "Give Me It".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:06 (twenty years ago) link

MMMMMM

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:07 (twenty years ago) link

If The Top disc had the demos for that album (available on Cats Like Cheese and the Swingin' Pig boot), I would get the tatoo of the "The Top" in that font I've been putting off.

The Tiananmen "Faith" is just so over the top, I seriously can't listen to it. But I had that Hot Hot Hot boot too, great sound quality.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:13 (twenty years ago) link

Those demos are pure butter. I LURVE THEM I DO.

Demos of all of the albums would be great, actually. I want "Two People" on CD.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:18 (twenty years ago) link

I can only second Dan and voice my disbelief over the inclusion of the Just Like Heaven remix snorefest and the absence of the glorious LGTB 'Milk Mix'.. I don't think they'll remaster Mixed Up either (in which case they would have to remaster Standing on the Becah as well..)

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:21 (twenty years ago) link

Well, Mixed Up did contain a lot of mixes specific to that album, not to mention the none-more-glorious "Never Enough," which is one of the most amazing songs that people keep forgetting ever. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:28 (twenty years ago) link

... and also one of the greatest songs to systematically sound awful when played live (except during the Summer of 1990 festival gigs)

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:31 (twenty years ago) link

"Never Enough" and "Fascination Street" didn't work live. Never heard a tolerable version of either.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:38 (twenty years ago) link

!!!

You guys are mental.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:40 (twenty years ago) link

Thank you, Dan, I was beginning to feel outnumbered here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:41 (twenty years ago) link

(that could live up to the studio versions)

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:41 (twenty years ago) link

so the rarities on the box are diff from what will be on 2 disc sets?

i had no idea these remasters were coming out. i assume that carnage visors will be on the remaster of faith, which will be nice as i want to replace my tapes already!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:51 (twenty years ago) link

Nothing with overlapping vocals could live up to the studio version! You might as well include "The Drowning Man" in that list as well!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:52 (twenty years ago) link

Of course. *seethe*

Oh I do love this band. All the various complaints above about how the fourth disc was crap are rendered invalid due to the presence of "Possession," "Coming Up," both versions of "Signal to Noise" and the alternate mixes of "This is a Lie," 'Out of This World" and "Maybe Someday."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 28 November 2004 05:55 (nineteen years ago) link

half way through the first disc, I'm realizing that either:
-I really don't like the Cure as much as I thought.
-or-
-There is a lot of unnecessary shit in this collection.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 30 December 2004 18:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Just wait until you hear the second half of the first disc. Then, if you're still feeling the same way then you probably don't like the Cure as much as you thought you did.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 30 December 2004 18:15 (nineteen years ago) link

(Since the second option is impossible. Then again, I am biased.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 December 2004 18:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, it is improving.. However, I don't expect to be listening to it often as a collection. A song at a time, here & there ....

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 30 December 2004 18:51 (nineteen years ago) link

its the last one (what 4th) that is best used as a drink coaster

*reviews tracklist* In my mind, not with these on it:

01. HOME
02. WAITING
04. THIS IS A LIE (palmer remix)
07. WORLD IN MY EYES
08. POSSESSION
09. OUT OF THIS WORLD (oakenfold remix)
10. MAYBE SOMEDAY (hedges remix)
11. COMING UP
12. SIGNAL TO NOISE (acoustic version)
13. SIGNAL TO NOISE
15. A FOREST (plati/slick version)

Again, though, I am biased.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 31 December 2004 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

I think CD4 is the second best disc in the collection (after CD1, of course). I was in no way expecting it to be that good.

In fact, I'm listing to "Maybe Someday" right now (with CD1 and CD4 queued up in Winamp)! Funny how that sort of thing happens when threads get revived, huh?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 31 December 2004 01:09 (nineteen years ago) link

true enough my friend-(oh i just can not get into 'signal to noise' at all!)
as i've said before, the whole thing is worth it for the flexi pop version of lament alone. & the booklet is packed with some good bits.

what has been reissued already? other than BoysDontCry (cause i think its the bonus tracks on these, that i need)

Hopefully someone will find this, I'm just wondering if Join the Dots contains all the b-sides off the officially released singles. I mean I see that it doesn't have the extended version of Just One Kiss, etc and remixes of the singles, but does it contain at least a version of every officially released b-side. I've decided I'm interested in collecting their 12"s and I'd like to start with the ones with b-sides not included here (since I plan to buy Join the Dots soon). Of course I could do the research, but I'm at work and I'll bet someone already knows this.

matt2 (matt2), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:53 (nineteen years ago) link

The things the box set is missing that spring to mind are:

"Primary" (Red Mix)
"Let's Go To Bed" (Milk Mix)
various "Wrong Number" mixes
"Gone!" (Ultraliving mix)
"Spilt Milk"
"Watching Me Fall" (Massive Attack remix)
2004 tracks

There are some other WMS-era remixes that are missing (at least one other remix of "Gone!", a remix of "Strange Attraction" and a remix of "The 13th") and I think there was a live version of "100 Years" that was on "The Hanging Garden" 12".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Does nobody else hate the "Chuck remix" of "Just Like Heaven"? I mean, why bother? It was pretty close to perfect before. J. Mascis brought a new and fresh angle to the song, but this is just an unnecessary butchering of one of The Cure's best moments.

j-rock, Thursday, 27 September 2007 11:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Ugh why did you invoke Dinosaur Jr

HI DERE, Thursday, 27 September 2007 11:43 (sixteen years ago) link

unagreed.

Mark G, Thursday, 27 September 2007 12:08 (sixteen years ago) link

Funniest thing ever -- Dinosaur Jr., opening for the Cure at the Rose Bowl 1992. They play said cover. Most of the crowd: "UH?"

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 27 September 2007 12:30 (sixteen years ago) link

To say nothing of the people running from the merch/food tents...

Mark G, Thursday, 27 September 2007 12:49 (sixteen years ago) link

I think that that particular version of "Just Like Heaven" is much more successful at evoking the breezy island flavor that 311 was going for with their "Lovesong" cover. It's not all that great but it's successful at what it does (ditto the remix of "The Caterpillar").

The William Orbit mix of "Inbetween Days" is still one of the greatest things ever recorded.

HI DERE, Thursday, 27 September 2007 14:04 (sixteen years ago) link

urgh - I hate all the remixes you mentionned, esp the "Inbetween Days" one. What's there to like?

baaderonixx, Thursday, 27 September 2007 14:06 (sixteen years ago) link

EVERYTHING ABOUT IT.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 27 September 2007 14:28 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh, except maybe the fact that it ends.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 27 September 2007 14:28 (sixteen years ago) link

What Ned said. Everything about that remix is brilliant:

- the fact that it's rather unapologetically 4/4 dancefloor fodder that still encapsulates the original dance-pop-rock infectiousness of the original;
- the synth burbles floating throughout;
- the pitch-shifting on the original components of the song to make it match the new stompy BPM;
- the all-out euphoric assault that builds from the opening and never stops;
- etc etc etc it's just plain awesome!

I agree with you about the "Just Like Heaven" and "Caterpillar" remixes, which is why I said they weren't too great.

HI DERE, Thursday, 27 September 2007 15:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Mark Saunders' Everything remix of "The Walk" will always be my favorite.

matt2, Thursday, 27 September 2007 15:53 (sixteen years ago) link

The remix of "A Forest" is pretty damn boss, too.

HI DERE, Thursday, 27 September 2007 15:53 (sixteen years ago) link

Hah yeah the Walk remix used to be my testing-new-audio-equipement favorite. Hmm, I'm gonna have to give the 'IBD' remix another spin but I rememeber hating that "synth burble" and the pitch shift used to make me sea-sick.

I just got this and I must say I'm having a lot of fun with it. It's interesting to see what slipped through the cracks for me, cause I would have thought myself pretty familiar with everything up through Disintegration. Like, I can't understand why I saw that Half An Octopus 10"/Quadpus 12" thing so many damn times in stores and yet it never occured to me to buy it. I guess I didn't understand there was a track on there I hadn't got elsewhere. Or maybe I didn't think it would be worth the money. I really don't know.

Also a grand surprise are the Catch b-sides (I swear to god I never even saw that 12" in stores, for real - I looked up the sleeve online and it rings zero bells for me) and the Just Like Heaven 12" b-sides. I don't recall ever owning that 12" either, but I'm not sure why.

That flexi version of Lament is um...nothing to get excited about, though...;)

"To The Sky" leaves me weak at the knees. That might just be the best thing here.

Bimble, Saturday, 19 January 2008 02:16 (sixteen years ago) link

I am amazed that they managed to turn the Doors' "Hello, I Love You" into a fantastic goth song. It's cool that it's mostly instrumental, too.

Bimble, Saturday, 19 January 2008 02:39 (sixteen years ago) link

By that I mean the "unreleased psychedelic mix", not the other one. The other one is not goth.

Bimble, Saturday, 19 January 2008 02:40 (sixteen years ago) link

HA! What a laugh.

Bimble, Saturday, 26 January 2008 10:21 (sixteen years ago) link

Most of the Kiss Me b-sides are pretty great. I like them more than the album, in fact. When I bought it, it came with a bonus orange LP with all the b-sides and that's the one I always played.
