a friend told me to check them out and a site said "Black Tape for a Blue Girl orbits in a musical plane all their own" but what about ilm? what about ilm?

Goth, surely?

Tom, Saturday, 8 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i didn't think ILM was that goth. sheesh, i mean, i know i own a skinny puppy cd and all, but...

Ah, you forgot *I* was around, dammit! And since I own all their CDs and a huge chunk of stuff from the Projekt label and usually talk to Sam Rosenthal once a week on line, I think I qualify as a fan. ;-)

Classic, but most definitely not everyone's cup of tea. Sam is very open about charting his relationships via his songs, so if the idea of metaphors like "Across a Thousand Blades" and "This Lush Garden Within," to quote some songtitles, bugs the poo out of you, steer clear. What I find most interesting about Black Tape is that it's very much a balance between collaboration and Sam's focused vision -- there has never been a 'real' band line-up but a variety of singers and musicians around the core axis of Sam and Oscar Herrera, the lead male vocalist. The result is that there's a definite Black Tape style -- Sam mixes post-Tangerine Dream electronics and synth washes with hushed, echoed instruments ranging from yer guitar and drums to strings and flutes -- but you can't always tell what's coming next.

Search: A Teardrop Left Behind is a good compilation of the early years but only appeared in Europe and seems to be out of print. Ashes In the Brittle Air is my hands-down favorite of said early years -- the title song is just wonderful -- while This Lush Garden Within is a fine example of the band at its collaborative best, something like ten different performers throughout. Remnants of a Deeper Purity is my all-time fave, with a core group of five performers just nailing it -- the final song, "I Have No More Answers," is my all-time favorite Black Tape song. Destroy...well, As One Aflame Laid Bare By Desire isn't bad but isn't as stunning as it could have been.

You can find out more at Projekt or at the official band site -- links to mp3s, etc. And while I'm thinking about Projekt, I recommend Lycia, SoulWhirlingSomewhere, Lovesliescrushing, Love Spirals Downwards, Mira, Voltaire, Unto Ashes, Lowsunday...

Ned forgot to mention that you're not supposed to call it "goth" anymore. It's "darkwave."

(Darkwave = goth + 4AD + new age.)

Nitsuh, Saturday, 8 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I don't mean that in a bad way, necessarily.

Nitsuh, Saturday, 8 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yes yes yes, darkwave, fine. GOOD MUSIC. There. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 8 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

No no no, Ned: darkwave.

You have to say it slowly and sort of whisper-y, or else it doesn't count. :)

Nitsuh, Saturday, 8 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

GAH! Now listen here, you 'orrible man -- my friend Eve in Chicago, who I mentioned, is getting a couple of homemade discs with Cure rarities and live stuff and the like from me as a gift. I can tell her never to play them for you. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 8 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ned..i almost forgot you wrote for AMG. thanks for all the info. I found Chaos of Desire, Ashes In the brittle air, first pain to linger, mesmerized by the sirens, and, remnants of a deeper purity all for a small price of 30$US on ebay..great deal!

kevin enas, Sunday, 9 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Not bad! Hope you like them -- if not, you probably know somebody who would. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 9 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I still have my 'This Lush Garden Within' CD somewheree abouts. I've only played it four or five times and that was years ago so I might dig it out again.

I remember it being a bit... too much 'we are arty' over- reaching and over-serious. And crap.

Sam is very *very* serious about his music, but he does have a hilarious sense of humor that's apparent elsewhere. He just has a specific vision for his own work and follows it -- it's no less obsessive than, say, Jason Pierce's own particular tropes. Again, that's why I say Black Tape won't be everybody's bag, it's very much a love/hate thing. He's shown his humor more openly with Projekt, though -- an early friend and musical partner Padraic Ogl put out a few hilarious releases under the Thanatos name that show a very wry vision of the universe, while a guy named Voltaire, who is a designer/animator out of New York, releases these utterly hilarious tongue-in-cheek death anthems backed by Eastern European semi-klezmer arrangements via Projekt. Then again, what can you expect from a guy who publishes a comic strip called _Oh My Goth!_.

Sam Rosenthal drives a little car. What is it? A Mazda Miata? Anyway, he worked with us on some stuff. He is a designer, you know. Nude Spock gets around. He gave me a promotional CD from Projekt and I bored him with questions about what it's like to run a label. I like BTFABG. What about some other Projekt stuff? The sampler was odd. Really, everything on Projekt orbits in it's own musical plane.

Ned, you wouldn't happen to be the guy in Boston that manages his website, would you?

Nude Spock, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yep. Next time you talk to Sam, tell him he's lucky he's not making some more smiley faces for us over here at Positive. He'll probably freak out trying to figure out what you're talking about at first.

Nude Spock, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yep. Me and ol' Sam go way back. Oh yeah. Shit, I must've worked with him, what, twice, three times? Incidentally, how many posts must I post in order to get this further up in the "NEW ANSWERS" spot? Geezuz.

Nude Spock, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Who, me? Nope, nothing to do with Projekt outside being a general booster. :-)

seven years pass...

This could have been a thread,, but I'll just put this question in here..... Who the hell is ROBIN RUSSELL??? I heard him in the AITBA album and I was floored, I looked him up and all I could find was some drummer guy called Robin Russell who is probably not the same person.
The guy sings like a motherfucker,, surely this could not be his only recorded work?? Is he a stage performer or something?

"Through Sky Blue Rooms" is on infinite repeat, this morning!

Mr. Raggett, orange ya glad that Sam finally released Tanzmusik properly!? I cannot wait to hear that thing! I mean, I don't care about the vinyl or special edition or whatever, I just wanna hear it! I love "Before the Buildings Fell" to pieces! Old Sammy has some other ambient works I adore as well.

I'm not really into that last black tape album. I don't really care what S. Rosenthal says, black tape will be an ethereal band again someday, and i cannot wait.

ten months pass...

never knowingly heard a note of this band's music but this rolling catalogue of their battles with a batshit European dude purporting to book them tour dates is a very entertaining read: http://www.projekt.com/store/bands-dont-be-scammed-by-pascal-alliot-daydream-booking-in-spain/

Hahah yeah Sam's been having a blast with this on FB. Every day a new weirdness.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 15:22 (ten years ago) link

SF band Enablers just had some disasterous booking thing in Europe too. I wonder if it was the same guy.

akm, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 18:38 (ten years ago) link

what was the issue w/ Enablers? the UK shows I'm aware of went well and were booked with trusted promoters. they appear to have had a guitar stolen in Dublin
