Bone thugs 'n' harmony - E1999 Eternal

i'm not sure if i like this album or not. there's definitely something i like about it, because i keep on listening to it. i still haven't worked out if I find it enjoyable, or if i just find it curious. it's very song-y - pretty much every track has a crystal-clear tune, and the rapping is very melodic too. of course, "tha crossroads" is great, as is "down 71 (the getaway)". the contrast between the sugary melodies and the violent themes is interesting. i think i like it.

what about you?

At the time, I really couldn't stand them, but in retrospect, they really were unique, weren't they?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:16 (twenty years ago) link

it's bizarre and garish and compelling. somehow they didnt seem half as weird at the time as they do now.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:46 (twenty years ago) link

it's strange how it kicks off with this weird, ugly intro with a scary slowed-down voice introducing the group - the last thing you expect is for them to follow this with over an hour of very *sweet* music. i'm listening to it at the mo, and edging more towards "liking" the record.

Great album.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:33 (twenty years ago) link

It can't touch the Bizzy Bone solo disc, which is a remarkably odd record

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 18:25 (twenty years ago) link

I've always loved it, DJ U-Neek's synth lines are wonderfully emotional, and obviously in contrast with the lyrical content. The beats are at times quite weak, but everything else just works on that album. "Resurrection" is also quite good, but it lacks some of the impact "E. 1999" had (too little U-Neek?). I haven't heard "Art of War", but I presume a double LP worth of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony might be too much.

"1st of tha Month" is one of the greatest songs of the 90s

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 19:44 (twenty years ago) link

it is wierd...Bone Thugs do kind of occupy their own weird little sphere of hip hop....maybe them and Crucial Conflict, but BT were very haunting and pretty and just plain strange. This album is great.

Ugh! Hated that song.....so depressing.

after much deliberation, i've decided that i like this album. i'm still creeped out by it, for no particular reason, but i listen to it a lot and i seem to enjoy listening to it so i give it the thumbs-up. and yes, 1st of the month is a beautiful song.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 20 March 2004 01:35 (twenty years ago) link

1st of the month is great just because it was playing the first time I was in my first love's bedroom.

Perhaps it's geography...Bone thugs were from Cleveland - not exactly a part of a particularly well-known scene.

I found it celebratory!

I don't think "sweet" is the word, except for that one song. More smooth than anything.

This is a very unique album. I'm tempted to say it's a great album because the good songs are excellent, but it's a bit spotty in places. "E.1999", "Eternal", "Bud Smokaz Only", "Crossroads" (original, not remix), "Me Killa", and "1st of tha Month" are the best tracks.

In retrospect, I am very surprised that no one really took their style and ran with it. I can't think of anyone who raps like they do in that highly melodic fashion-- part thug, part barbershop, part doo-wop.

"Bud Smokers Only" is one of the best weed anthems ever, so joyous and with a great beat.

These guys probably deserve to be in the discussions of canonical hip hop groups a lot more than they do.

they have some many weird little phrases and vocal tics and weird ways of saying stuff that i love

like saying "run run" instead of "run" or my personal fav "me killa"

never really read a good interview with these guys? i wonder if their style was dancehall influenced?

the sorta liquid phrasing and half-singing, half-rapping seems kinda dancehall....as well as stuff like "me killa"

Phil later told us, ‘The reason why I granted the song to be cleared is because I said to myself these dudes must have great taste in music because ‘Take Me Home’ is one of my favorite songs.’ That whole experience was great.”

they were HUGE when i was in high school

just sayin, Wednesday, 29 July 2015 08:17 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, they were pretty big in most circles at my Catholic high school in Cleveland at the time. 1995 was also the year the Indians were absolutely dominant and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame opened. It was a great time to be in Cleveland.

...and then, it all fell apart (/Behind the Music).
