Interpol: Name Your Reasons Why They Are So Bad And Hated

You know... all their fans are fucking black haired college radio pseudo-hipster asshats who are all up on the Strokes nuts and probably didn't even like Joy Division until last year. You know all these kids totally listened to Blink 182 in the last 4 years and probably still have Dude Ranch in their neglected cd changer back at their parents' house.

The people I know here who dress like Interpol are actually really nice. I like the band too, for the most part. The album gets boring, but I like most of their songs.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 06:37 (twenty years ago) link

Is this a self-parody or something Jon?

Belgian Rofflez (Adrian Langston), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 06:49 (twenty years ago) link

I only listen to Krautrock and noise rock; I bought Dookie last year.

Lil' Won Jilliams (ex machina), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 06:53 (twenty years ago) link

Man, 2002 was a long time ago, wasn't it.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 06:57 (twenty years ago) link

Dookie was the first album I ever purchased on CD. Pure genius, that album

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 06:58 (twenty years ago) link

1994 seems even more recent than 2002, even.

TURN OFF THE BRIGHT LIGHTS

Lil' Won Jilliams (ex machina), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 07:04 (twenty years ago) link

Ha ha. Interpol aren't really bad, just uninteresting. To my ears, anyway.

"1994 seems even more recent than 2002, even."

Strangely, this is true.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 07:09 (twenty years ago) link

It feels true anyway.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 07:09 (twenty years ago) link

I like Interpol.

That album is just really enjoyable. I could care less about the Joy Division derivative thing. First of all, I don't really hear it. Maybe Joy Division is an influence, but so what. That's a good thing. I love Joy Division, so if a band sounds a bit like Joy Division, then I'm happy.

Debito (Debito), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 07:12 (twenty years ago) link

UR JUST ANGRY CAUSE YOU CAN"T BUY EXPENSIVE SUITS LIKE THEY CAN!

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 07:16 (twenty years ago) link

I really like the Interpol album. Much much more than I like Joy Division.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 07:18 (twenty years ago) link

You're all boring!

Lil' Won Jilliams (ex machina), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 07:21 (twenty years ago) link

i'm actually really curious how they afford all those suits, it's not like they're busting up the charts or anything (this not even taking into account how the coke habits must eat into their cheques).

Belgian Rofflez (Adrian Langston), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 07:22 (twenty years ago) link

Charity shops, innit.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 07:24 (twenty years ago) link

I still like Dude Ranch.

Jole, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 11:30 (twenty years ago) link

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 13:19 (twenty years ago) link

I dig Interpol some. I bought the album. I listen to it occasionally. I've liked Joy Division since I was 14 (about 10 years) and honestly I just don't see the connection. I mean, there's an influence for sure, but I wouldn't call it a rip off and I think anyone who does has a very shallow view of music. I mean, Interpol's a bit dark and moody can't sing, but after that the similarities pretty much end (or are just aspects that too many bands share to be notable).

I like Joy Division much better, but I think Interpol is an alright band and I'm growing tired of reading the two in the same sentence. I think liking Interpol was "hip" for about 3.5 seconds, and then someone compared them to JD which instantaneoulsy became a much hipper stance because it fit right in with the cynical, intelligent, couldn't-be-bothered-to-care hipster image.

And since when is just starting to listen to Joy Division last year such a bad thing. I mean, kids these days, where are they supposed to even be exposed to good music? On the radio? MTV? I was just lucky I was in the right place, with the right friends, at the right time, and ended up being into music enough that I continued to put the effort into exploring. The kids are alright, ok.

Mike Salmo (salmo), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 15:07 (twenty years ago) link

i hate interpol because carlos still owes me like $60.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 15:15 (twenty years ago) link

If the comparison point was with the Chameleons more, I would be happier and people would start listening to them more, a fine thing. (The Kitchens of Distinction reference above equally and deservedly applies.) As for Interpol, I'm sure they're keeping well in bad haircuts and coke.

I don't dislike Interpol - that's why I haven't posted here.. But the title of the thread is "..reasons why they are so bad and hated" .. not "..C/D". So I believe this thread is for smacking Interpol and it's legion of irritating fans. y'all are doing it wrong. cut it out.

mike a, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 15:27 (twenty years ago) link

So, yeah, Turn on the Bright Lights was my favorite album of 2002. Let's see...

all their fans are fucking black haired

Dark brown.

college radio

Four years out of college; never did college radio.

pseudo-hipster asshats

Erm, I guess that one's subjective.

who are all up on the Strokes nuts

I liked Is This It and stuck up for the band against its detractors, but I never obsessed over them and haven't bothered with the new one.

and probably didn't even like Joy Division until last year.

No, I've never liked Joy Division.

You know all these kids totally listened to Blink 182 in the last 4 years

The only time I've willingly listened to Blink 182 is when they had that video on MTV recently with the high school-as-prison motif, and all the kids busted out and danced around in their underwear. Some of the girls were pretty hot. In 1999, my favorite album was, like, Sam Prekop.

and probably still have Dude Ranch in their neglected cd changer back at their parents' house.

I don't know who or what Dude Ranch is. My parents' CD changer probably has, like, Joni Mitchell and Kind of Blue and Yo-Yo Ma in it.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 15:32 (twenty years ago) link

one of them worked/works at a vintage clothes shop I think? I don't think they sound that much like Joy Division, I'd probably like them better if they did. The music doesn't excite me, but it certainly isn't terrible, but I think most people are haters because of the way they look. I once requested one of them to play Ultravox while DJing and they responded "look, I just know, like the surface stuff, I don't dig as deep as you and XXXXX" so make of that what you will. That's the only Interpol-related story I can share.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 15:37 (twenty years ago) link

...i just know, like the surface stuff,..

ddb, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 16:26 (twenty years ago) link

I think it is ridiculous that so many people talk about them being well dressed. And you think the shit they were is expensive? I don't know, I haven't seen them in a while, but just because someone is wearing a jacket, doesn't mean that they are well dressed or that they spent a lot of money. You can find a black jacket for $.99 at a thrift store. I think they look like they are playing dress up in a poor grandfather's closet.

Magic City (ano ano), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 16:48 (twenty years ago) link

The worst and best rumor I heard about them is that one of them apparently tried to pick up a girl with the line "I'm related to Hitler, you know."

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 16:59 (twenty years ago) link

that would be even better if he was like "and I only got one ball too, check it!"

hstencil, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 17:01 (twenty years ago) link

maybe it was "I can really relate to hitler?"

I tell people I'm related to Aldolf Loos but nobody seems impressed.

I'm not though.

I bet they pay very little money for their vintage clothes and look very nice, while many bands in nyc that look like dirtbags are wearing a combination of free Diesel and Levis clothes as well as the latest scumbag-chic high-fashion designs.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 17:09 (twenty years ago) link

All caps for the ultra-serious delivery of this line by Interpol singer: "LOVE IS IN THE KITCHEN WITH A CULINARY EYE/SHE'S COOKING SOMETHING GOOD/I THINK I'M SMART ENOUGH TO TRY"

Sorry if I misquoted, but HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! HA HA HA HA HA HA! At least they have sense enough to look nice.

bren, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 17:14 (twenty years ago) link

maybe it was "I can really relate to hitler?"

UGH. That's far worse. especially with the question mark.

I tell people I'm related to Aldolf Loos but nobody seems impressed.

Dammit. I'm not buying you a drink ever again.

I bet they pay very little money for their vintage clothes and look very nice, while many bands in nyc that look like dirtbags are wearing a combination of free Diesel and Levis clothes as well as the latest scumbag-chic high-fashion designs.

I was about to say. I think the elevated "trash" pedestal that fashion trends are obsequious to these days kinda supports this.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 17:22 (twenty years ago) link

I didn't even know that they were hated, although the backlash was obviously inevitable.
Therefore, I have no idea why they are so bad and hated, although I can take a stab at it, 1) they sound so much like Joy Division (good or bad depending on the person judging), 2) they were critically lauded (good or bad depending on the person judging), 3) Pitchfork loves them (good or bad depending on the person judging).

There, I've just named three reasons why they are bad and hated AND three reasons why they are good and loved.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 17:22 (twenty years ago) link

there was a backlash when the record came out when hipsters were like "they suck" then there was a backlash backlash when critics were like "I actually like them"

this thread comes at a time where I didn't think many people were arguing about them. isn't there some new polarizing act to go from 0-60mph really fast? We already did the rapture. What band is appearing on talk shows and in the press now that is worth fighting about?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 17:29 (twenty years ago) link

Wolf Eyes "Stabbed In The Face b/w Rat Floods / Stabbed II" 12" (different than Panicsville split) has been sent to the plant, and will be released by Sub Pop Records in late April. Do the Chameleons and the Kitchens (of Distinction, apparently) still exist?

Actually, yeah to the Chameleons. Full new album three years ago and the tour a year and a half ago was fucking stellar, beyond words, though I did try to say a few things.

Emotional resonance for every individual in the moment and of the now is vitally important stuff. But those feelings and reactions need not have been just invented yesterday either.

they lack any Simon LeBon flair whatsoever.

Interpol vs. Duran Duran is, I think, no contest.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 April 2004 01:22 (twenty years ago) link

:-) Very cool!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 April 2004 01:40 (twenty years ago) link

Do the Chameleons and the Kitchens (of Distinction, apparently) still exist? Because I'm getting kind of tired of the underlying "too bad you didn't get into this stuff when it was better 15-20 YEARS AGO!" attitude involved in the Interpol-hate.

I think all the "Interpol = Chameleons/KOD ripoffs" statements might be partly musical bragging, but moreso an opportunity for folks who were into the Chameleons and K.O.D. to passionate plug them once again, and also express and explain why Interpol doesn't really excite them. Understandably, this can come off badly. (I plead guilty to all of the above at one point.)

Also, two reason I think Interpol succeeded where, say, Kitchens didn't as much, is a) Interpol is three syllables, and b) Interpol didn't have overtly (literally) gay lyrics.

(Not to say having gay lyrics and few syllables is a recipe for non-success.. Frankie Goes To Hollywood is a shining counterexample to that, among others.. but for a three-to-four piece "indie" band, maybe so WAAAAAY back in the 90s)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 1 April 2004 01:49 (twenty years ago) link

(sorry, many syllables)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 1 April 2004 01:50 (twenty years ago) link

To answer your question Nate.. Chameleons' first main phase broke up around 1987. Mark Burgess has done some low key solo shows ever since, and now the band are back. So, that's 15-20 years old, if you stretch it.

Kitchens were a younger band, and were -- too -- accused of being Chameleons rip-offs. They started right around the time the Chameleons first broke up, and ended in 1996 or so.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 1 April 2004 01:53 (twenty years ago) link

ken taylrr, Thursday, 1 April 2004 19:17 (twenty years ago) link

Interpol played in Zürichs Rote Fabrik last year and there was that guy in the audience that shouted during every quieter part: Fuck off you suck and other stuff in bad english. after a couple of minutes the singer hopped of stage, the band continued playing, he shoved his way thru the audience confronted that guy and broke his nose. he than made his way back on stage, the audience applauded warmly and they continued the song.
Actually I am not really sure if this a reason to love them or hate them.

egon krenz (slaytrack), Thursday, 1 April 2004 20:48 (twenty years ago) link

What other kind of reason is there to hate a band? Eesh

Whining about not being second on a bill but being third on a bill instead. But I won't get into my brief history as a show promoter.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 1 April 2004 20:49 (twenty years ago) link

I find the Strokes dull, think the Tragically Hip quip was fucking funny (I detest that band like few others), and either like or love just about every other band mentioned in this thread. Maybe five rock records from the past five years have excited me; Turn on the Bright Lights is one of them. Go figure.

Hey I actually bought Dookie for the first time last year too, out of some weird pop culture completist urge, though I never liked Green Day much. The first two albums as well. I think I"ll just burn 'em and trade 'em eventually.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 22 August 2004 22:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Interpol a Josef K? Nonsense. Josef K were pioneers who could do no wrong. Interpol are about as pleasant as they are mediocre.

People only say they sound like JD because of the singer's voice, or because it doesn't fit the mould of whatever sub-metal hip-hop hybrid is cool these days, or because they think JD comparisons will sell more CD's.

Someone upthread said Interpol weren't bad enough to be hated properly and I think that's true.

Man you can just go to the Interpol website and read the bios. I challenge anyone not to think them utter asshats after reading that shit. It's not hating the fans, it's hating the self-conscious retard band members.

As the lead singer for Interpol, Paul Banks surely packs a punch with his unique vocals and mysterious lyrics. He is the youngest member of the band and has had the privileged of having lived in various parts of the world.

Ooooh... "mysterious." Having had the privileged of having listened to Interpol albums I find that really is the best word to describe that tripe.

Paul's voice/singing style is constantly compared to that of the late and iconic Ian Curtis, quite a compliment don't you think?

Except when he's being called out for being unoriginal. Way to take it back, official bio writer!

Carlos D, as he prefers to be called, is part pseudo Goth, part Latin lover, part new wave wonder and quite possibly the most flashy and stylish  member of Interpol.

Carlos D, as he prefers to be called, is part pseudo Goth, part Latin lover, part new wave wonder and quite possibly the most flashy and stylish member of Interpol. He studied philosophy while at NYU and is probably the most verbose and articulate member of Interpol (which says a lot since they are all quite eloquent) He is half German and half Columbian and believes that his name is ethnically confusing for people. Carlos is the social butterfly of the band and has the snazziest moves while playing his bass. He used to play the keyboards when Eric wasn’t touring with them. And currently pursues another of his passions while not on tour: DJ’ing. He mostly spins 80’s/new wave stuff but also throws in some more obscure and current stuff into the mix. Catch him at a club if he comes to your town, for it is surely a sight to see and hear. Carlos is probably the easiest member to approach and seems to always be willing to talk/party with the fans. The man has a memory of steel too! He forgets nothing and no one!

the first church of latebloomer, friend of plebians and santa (reformed) (latebl, Thursday, 20 January 2005 22:21 (nineteen years ago) link

To say that Daniel Kessler is the mastermind behind Interpol would be an understatement. Daniel has been a lover of music since he was a little kid back in England and prior to Interpol he gained much experience in the music biz by working at record labels such as Jetset, Beggars Banquet and Domino to name a few. He even worked for a production company. But Daniel formed the band on his own intuitions and not with the help of anyone from these companies. Daniel is one smart kat and he has admitted to that, “I’ve always felt like the hardest part was the formation of the band, that’s 50 percent of it. After that, a lot of it is hard work and being smart about things”.

Samuel Fogarino on Daniel, “He’s the assigned dedicated worrier for the band. He’s the most motivated person I have ever met in my whole life. That nervous energy has a severe output.”

Don’t be fooled by Daniel’s shyness because he can definitely rock out and sing lovely. He is sincere when you talk to him and interested in what you have to say, probably one of the nicest musicians you could ever meet and the only member of the band who doesn’t smoke!

As the lead singer for Interpol, Paul Banks surely packs a punch with his unique vocals and mysterious lyrics. He is the youngest member of the band and has had the privileged of having lived in various parts of the world. He was born in England, lived in Spain for a few years, attended high school in Mexico and studied abroad in France. We hear his Spanish and French are pretty good. He came up with the idea for the band name "Interpol" because his Spanish speaking friends would teasingly call him "Pol, Pol, Interpol". "Pol" is Paul in Spanish. Paul's voice/singing style is constantly compared to that of the late and iconic Ian Curtis, quite a compliment don't you think?

Sam is the elder statesman in the group. He had a good deal of musical experience under his belt prior to joining Interpol. He lived in Florida for a couple of years and was part of a band called the Holy Terrors, a punk rock band. Things didn’t turn out as he had hoped for them but things would work out for Sam later on when he moved to NYC and met Daniel. Sam went to Interpol’s second show (Greg was still a member) and was very impressed, which says a lot because in the past, the only band he fully believed in was the Holy Terrors. When Greg departed and Daniel sent Sam the Interpol self released EP, Sam knew immediately that this was something he wanted to be part of and it has been a blessed union of souls ever since. It is hard to imagine Interpol with out Sam. Quite possibly the most humble and kind member in the band, he can also play the drums like a beast and it is really impressive that he can play in those dress shirts ;)

here goes for me. i've asked my friends about this but they don't hear it. interpole actually hurt my ears. not like facetious, 'they're so bad they hurt' but something, i'm thinking the way the cymbals were recorded, just kills my ears. it's actually painful. it's that high-end eee-eee-eee sound, the ride and the crashes, way up in the mix. anyone else?

I like Interpol. I bought tickets to go see them in March. Yes, I paid, like a civilian. I've heard they're boring live, but that's okay, because the show's at Radio City Music Hall, which has a great sound system and comfortable chairs. I saw Sigur Ros there and had a really good time.

i saw them at a festival in 2003 and they were good. I was pretty tired at the time though.

Interpol: Name Your Reasons Why They Are So Bad And Hated

One decent track (Obstacle #1) in two albums would seem to be far and away enough reason. Ifankyew.

Oh, perhaps it's just me.

I like me Phil, I should note. But I should also say Sigur Ros are a band I would happily beat the living snot out of.

Hey Ned, I like me too. Funny we have that in common.

I wouldn't waste time beating Sigur Ros. Or Interpol for that matter. Except for Carlos. Him I'd beat given the chance.

nine years pass...

It's one of those ~deep mysteries of life~, isn't it?

How some guys can put on a £.99p jacket or a £2000 suit, and look like... Interpol.

And yet *you* could put the same clothes, and just look like a guy in a cheap suit.

Masculine beauty, how does it work. I dunno; ~ItsAMystery.gif~
