Simon Finn: Pass The Distance

Does anyone else know this album? A friend of mine sent me a copy last week. It is very, very weird. Released in 1970, produced by David Toop I think (or at least he was involved), and Simon Finn's only album to date. I have no idea why he stopped recording, a website informs me that he emigrated to Canada in the mid-seventies. Apparently, he has recorded a new album this year - I'm wondering if 34 years between debut and follow-up is a world record.

Anyway, as for the album itself, it's loosely in that folky singer-songerwriter tradition that was current in the late 60s early 70s, think Syd Barrett's solo albums, but considerably more weird than that. He makes Syd sound as sane as a banl clerk. It really is the sound of a mind disintegrating - an acoustic version of Scott Walker's Tilt perhaps. Listening to it feels like being trapped inside someone's bad dream. Very interesting, very disturbing.

Anyway, I'd be interested to know whether anyone else has heard it and what they make of it.

"bank clerk" that was meant to be.

btw, Durtro is re-releasing this album in June 2004. From their website:

"Reissue of Tibet's favourite dark acid-folk album ever. Originally released in 1970 on the English Mushroom label, this is one of the rarest and strangest albums in the genre. With extra songs, many photos, full colour original artwork and liner notes by Simon Finn, David Toop, Vic Keary and David Tibet. Remastered from the original tapes."

it's really good, i think. i don't know about 'a mind disintegrating' or whatever, it just seems like an iconoclastic and odd set of songs.

if i'm reading his website right, he was like 19 when he recorded "pass the distance." david "ooh, look, something shiny!" tibet has latched onto him and a legit rerelease on durtro is planned.

(x-post? i think?)

"jerusalem" is pretty unhinged, though.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Monday, 26 April 2004 10:05 (nineteen years ago) link

great record.
there's a CD that's been around for a few years...

Russ, Monday, 26 April 2004 18:02 (nineteen years ago) link

fantastic record.

I heard this at Olsen's crib way back in '98 and spent five years searching for a copy. Finally found the reissue (good enough for me) for $5 in the used bin at Kims. It's nice when records are as good as you remember.

Totally psyched to hear his new record!! File that shit under things you never thought you'd ever see...

Some of the lyrics are very like Jandek!

Tim Ellison, Monday, 26 April 2004 19:40 (nineteen years ago) link

omg maybe it is jandek! someone alert the jandek list!!!!!!

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Monday, 26 April 2004 19:52 (nineteen years ago) link

it definitely is not jandek

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 26 April 2004 21:27 (nineteen years ago) link

(i was kidding)

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Monday, 26 April 2004 21:48 (nineteen years ago) link

yes this album is something special. it only gets better from "jerusalem," which is the undisputed centrepiece, and a performance which someboby like bright eyes should have to listen to... or maybe that wouldn't be such a good idea.

duke bright, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 01:32 (nineteen years ago) link

not a good idea at all. I'm still furious over the fact that good bands got cut from the Jandek tribute album so that fuck could contribute the worst fucking 'tribute' i've ever heard

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 02:31 (nineteen years ago) link

because of this thread, I wrote to Simon today and invited him to play at Lit, and he wrote back already!
nothing's been worked out yet tho...

Russ, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 03:08 (nineteen years ago) link

keep me posted Russ!

three weeks pass...
Simon will be playing in Brooklyn at a venue tba (most likely, the Mexican restaurant "El Bohemio" on Marcy) on Saturday 8/28, with Espers and another group tba.

Russ, Friday, 21 May 2004 17:11 (nineteen years ago) link

goddammit!! I won't be living in NYC then!!

I'm actually pretty sure I will make the drive up for that gig. No way I'm missing that. No way.

Russ W@terhouse = best promoter ever.

The CD is finally out, and it sounds/looks great.

Looking forward to the 8/28 show, NNCK, DJ Joel St. Germain and myself also on the bill.

que what?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:42 (nineteen years ago) link

no hard liquor. cruel to be at a mexican restaurant and not be able to get margaritas, wouldn't you say?

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:47 (nineteen years ago) link

gotcha, right. If not margaritas, tequila shots would suffice. Still, I liked the place. Don't know for sure if this show is gonna be there yet though.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:49 (nineteen years ago) link

my move may be postponed till september 1st - i'm crossing my fingers!

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Saturday, 31 July 2004 00:55 (nineteen years ago) link

man, two years ago I thought I was the only one who even knew who Simon Finn was (aside from Olson, who introduced me to the record) - nice to know he has fans.

I haven't herad that tour cd he did yet - is it worth picking up? I'm skeptical but curious

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 31 July 2004 00:56 (nineteen years ago) link

I picked up that bootleg CD a few years ago at Kim's, after reading something somewhere that compared him to Jandek.

I've heard a few of his new songs and they are good, though not particularly psychedelic.
Just guitar and voice.

I can't wait for this show !

Russ (Russ), Saturday, 31 July 2004 03:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Me neither. Russ, you deserve a medal for this one

The Brain has MP3 samples of the EP up with their review of it. I haven't downloaded them yet, so I can't tell you what they sound like.

Vic Funk, Saturday, 31 July 2004 11:35 (nineteen years ago) link

I am pretty sure that the tour CD is actually more unreleased 1970's songs?

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Saturday, 31 July 2004 15:17 (nineteen years ago) link

I am pretty sure that the tour CD is actually more unreleased 1970's songs?

That's not really a question, but here's answer:

"At Tibet's urging, Finn returned to London in January [2004]. Together, they recorded two of the old songs, "Jerusalem" and "In The Courtyard," along with new ones Finn wrote in Montreal, for a CD to be released later this year. A five-song EP of them is also to be launched at the Music Gallery." http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1086991810945&call_pageid=968867495754&col=969483191630

"One of the most enigmatic and defiantly anti-commercial groups to emerge from the New York loft scene during the '90s, NNCK (as the group is often abbreviated) membership is in a state of near-constant flux. Incorporating elements of folk, drone, psychedelia, free jazz, noise, and just about everything else, NNCK has nevertheless carved out a distinctive sound. The collective has also made a name for itself through its live performances. In early 1999, NNCK toured with guitar legend John Fahey, who dubbed them his favorite new band." - All Music Guide

Russ (Russ), Friday, 6 August 2004 18:49 (nineteen years ago) link

I am so completely psyched. Russ, can you email me directions to this place?

$8? You coulda gotten $20.

This will literally be my last night in NYC, and if there's a better way to spend it, I don't wanna know what it is. Plus I'll get to hang out with Joel! (St Germain, that is...haven't seen dude in like forever)

is someone gonna record Simon's set?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 6 August 2004 18:56 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't have any good credentials to put under my dj name.

xpost - dude, roger, man.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 6 August 2004 18:56 (nineteen years ago) link

that's why I'm sending it here first, for advice.
was thinking about charging $10, but feel sorta bad about the lack of a stage...
still on the fence...dunno.
I want my friends to be able to afford it too.
but I have to cough up a healthy guarantee for Simon.

$8 or $10 ?
how many people will come to this?

Roger - where do you need directions from?

maybe I'll ask Eric from The SB to record it, but I always space out when it comes to that.
I never think to do it...not even with my own band, even when I've brought and already set up a tape recorder.

Russ (Russ), Friday, 6 August 2004 19:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Joel - is there anything you want me to put under your name in the email?

Russ (Russ), Friday, 6 August 2004 19:07 (nineteen years ago) link

"Planet Rock! This take me back! I am 50 years old!"

no, just kidding, don't put that on there.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 6 August 2004 19:11 (nineteen years ago) link

$10 is still way cheap. I'd pay that just to see NNCK and Virgin Eye

I really thought you'd charge more, to be honest. And no one - NO ONE - is broker than me.

I need direction from the BQE

I wouldn't mind setting up 2 mics and recording Simon to 8 track, maybe. I'll see what I can do...

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 6 August 2004 19:18 (nineteen years ago) link

well, it's probably already too late to jack up the price...
oooops.
if about 115 people pay $8, I should be able to break even.

Russ (Russ), Friday, 6 August 2004 19:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Re: is anyone recording it; if not at the show, we may be doing a WFMU session (thanks to Russ) which would be archived.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Friday, 6 August 2004 21:52 (nineteen years ago) link

And to think I ALMOST ignored this thread because I hadn't heard of the guy. This is some spectacular stuff!!!

Bimble (bimble), Saturday, 7 August 2004 05:09 (nineteen years ago) link

russ, you may want to talk to Rich at the Social Registry...he has this "portable" reel-to-reel w/ 2 mic set up that sounds really nice, did a bunch of Gang Gang Dance recordings with it...hey may be persuadable.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 7 August 2004 16:50 (nineteen years ago) link

he's a really nice guy. I'm sure he'd do it if he's around.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:19 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm sure he'd offer to do it...whether you can be sure that he will totally come down with all the gear and get it done is a whole other question!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 7 August 2004 19:02 (nineteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...
let it be known,

Sr. Dominguez & Sr. Morena, proprietors of La Nortena / El Bohemio have informed me that the space now indeed has a LIQUOR LICENSE and will be serving cans of beer (Tecate & Dos Equis) for cheaper than $5 on Saturday. It will be a lot of fun. They want me to throw a dance dj on after the show, I don't know, what do you folks think? Otherwise they're putting on their own Nortena / Tejano dj.

Todd

todd p, Monday, 23 August 2004 20:03 (nineteen years ago) link

by liquor license I don't just mean they can sell beer, I mean they can mix a hell of a margarita, or straight tequila, or mexcal with squirt in it or whatever it is you like.

Saturday will be a really great show. $8 dollars is cheap.
