Because there's never been a Winger thread for some strange reason. I suggest that they are the missing link between Whitesnake and Trixter!

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Did anybody in Whitesnake or Trixter ever play with Alice Cooper?

His name is Kip Winger.

saddo stuart from beavis & butthead liked them.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:39 (nineteen years ago) link

To this day Beavis & Butthead is the only place I've actually heard Winger. I don't remember being impressed.

But let's see what the All Music Guide's Steve Huey has to say about them in his 4 1/2 star review:

Since Winger was marketed largely on the looks of lead singer Kip Winger, and since their sleazy rockers and lovelorn ballads cover the same old pop-metal territory, the band's high-quality musicianship tended to get overlooked. Guitarist Reb Beach earned wide praise from other musicians, and he, ex-Dixie Dregs drummer Rod Morgenstein, and keyboardist Paul Taylor bring a distinct progressive-metal influence to many of the tunes on Winger. Even if the lyrics are standard-issue, the album is impeccably composed, crafted, and played, with melodies, riffs, and guitar solos taking off in unexpected directions and keeping the listener slightly off balance — no easy task in the cookie-cutter hair-metal genre. The only misstep is an overdone, tight-assed, totally misguided recasting of "Purple Haze." Otherwise, Winger is a surprisingly accomplished debut.

surely chuck will defend them. (and claim they're better than the Beatles/Beefheart/Velvets/insert sacred cow here in the process...)

Rod Morgenstern liked to turn the beat COMPLETELY around in the midst of otherwise forgettable hair pop.

Funny you should mention that Shakey, because I suggest, in fact, that they are the missing link between the Beatles, Beefheart and the Velvet Underground

oh no! it's Chuck (Keiko), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:47 (nineteen years ago) link

well they ARE better than the Beatles (and the Velvet Underground, who I haven't heard in years, so maybe they're not, I don't remember). but KIP Winger's solo work isn't as good as that, though he's WAY better than Tom Waits (but not as good as Kix, who were also better than Winger)

I always like "Seventeen". I mean, yeah, what Colin said. You could tell the guys were musicians. I liked those little rhythmic stutters at the end of the verse-lines. Kind of Zeppelin-esque.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:56 (nineteen years ago) link

I really really liked their hits in Grade 5 ("Seventeen", "Madeleine", and "Headed for a Heartbreak" - were there others?). Was HFAH kind of epic and proggy? Somehow I remember it that way. I thought "Madeleine" was anthemically romantic at the time and also that "Madeleine" was a really nice name. I haven't heard them since then.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 18:16 (nineteen years ago) link

That acoustic intro to "Madeleine" made my 14 year old ears perk up, and, as a novice, I spent many hours trying to master it. I didn't really like the rest of the album, though, and never heard the subsequent ones.

I'll give Winger credit for turning me onto the Dixie Dregs, though, in which Rod Morgenstern be the drummer.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 18:23 (nineteen years ago) link

I also really liked their logo and album cover.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 18:30 (nineteen years ago) link

What are the Dixie Dregs like?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 18:32 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, the musicianship was the interesting part. but they were almost completely forgettable because they had nothing to say and served no purpose. much better than Whitesnake. probably better than Trixter, but the latter did have niceness (and flannel) going for them.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 18:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Dixie Dregs were like the Southern Rock version of Prog (with elements of Fusion). Most of the time they were a showcase for Steve Morse's guitar playing, but the songs themselves were strong at any rate.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 18:46 (nineteen years ago) link

If you say in a review of any band that the songs "cover the same old... territory," and "the lyrics are standard-issue," should it be legal to give a 4-1/2-star rating?

wetmink (wetmink), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 19:51 (nineteen years ago) link

I suggest that they are the missing link between Whitesnake and Trixter!

Naaaww. Whitesnake existed as many threads, none covered by Winger in the least. You had Whitesnake, the arena boogie band. Then there was Whitesnake - Deep Purple when there was no Deep Purple. Then there was
Whitesnake as the very rich man's Kingdom Come or as front for session men making the hit single Keith Olsen and David Coverdale wanted. Then there was the Whitesnake as a front for Steve Vai.

Whitesnake was too schizo, just a brand name and a changing one. Way too bluesy also; Winger was solid white-white-white handsome American, but not thud-like or even slightly Brit white-boy blues.

George Smith, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 20:58 (nineteen years ago) link

I've never really gotten into any Winger songs (Except the chorus of "Seventeen," I guess), but I really dig his vibe. He's totally not afraid to strut, hip-swivel, shake his hair, flash his body hair and leer at the camera. He's such a shameless little ho. His duet with Fiona is called "You're Sexing Me," which is especially funny if you know that "sexing" someone means to determine their gender (chicken sexing is an actual JOB - thank you, Book Of Lists). I think Winger and Fiona probably both found themselves in plenty of situations where a potential lover's gender was unclear.

Winger is fucking horrible.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 21:04 (nineteen years ago) link

When I was a kid I thought he sang "don't you know I feel the pain/ when my piano blows up in the rain" due to the imagery found in his "Heading For A Heartbreak" video.

I ch-ch-choose Bringing On the Heartbreak by Leppard over Winger's heartbreak tune.

i just (moments ago, really) read in the new yorker (presumably thanks to Alex in NYC?) that Winger are playing tonight at the BB King Blues Club. so are you listening to their sound check? or is it a REALLY early show?

chr1sb0y, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 23:57 (sixteen years ago) link

sound check. Possibly opener?

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 21 February 2008 15:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, that was mine. Well spotted.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 21 February 2008 17:19 (sixteen years ago) link

I really like "Madeleine," esp the "ah-ah-aaah" part.

Sundar, Thursday, 21 February 2008 18:05 (sixteen years ago) link

People really really love this guy! I ran into an old friend while leaving the building and we both did the kind of "What are YOU doing here?" back and forth that normally gets reserved for cathouses and funeral homes.

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 21 February 2008 18:32 (sixteen years ago) link

In all candor, if I found out that a dear friend of mine was a devout fan of Winger, I'd have to euthanize them immediately.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 21 February 2008 20:20 (sixteen years ago) link

When I was in college (Illinois State) Winger played our basketball shed - when they were done with the show, Kip made his way to 'sorority row' where he picked one (Tri sigs) and went in with a polaroid - orgy madness ensued with him gettin' hummers and groupsex with the house whilst the young maidens took pix with the instamatic. Those pix made their way around campus for a few weeks - truly disgusting. One girl in the house brought 'em into pizza place where we worked and delivery guys would stuff one pict in with outgoing pies - what a surprise in every box.

More power to him.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 21 February 2008 21:36 (sixteen years ago) link

See, if that was today, it woulda been all over the internet and he woulda been catapulted to supermegastardom.

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 21 February 2008 22:06 (sixteen years ago) link

are you implying that kip winger is not a supermegastar?

da croupier, Thursday, 21 February 2008 23:01 (sixteen years ago) link

No. No, I am not.

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 21 February 2008 23:09 (sixteen years ago) link

Kip Winger is a assuredly many, many things - cheese monkey, ass clown, ballerina, doofus, embarrassment, douchebag -- but supermegastar does not apply.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 22 February 2008 00:19 (sixteen years ago) link

But i'm not implying it is what I'm saying.

I remember an interview with Reb Beach (who I guess was the guitarist, thought the name doesn't sound that familiar to me) in which he described the recording process. When it came time to record the solo, Beach stated that as the process was beginning, Kip would be 'jumping up and down in the studio' and would be saying 'Now Reb, you're going to play the most awesome solo in the history of rock now, right? OK, here we go, here we go...'

calstars, Friday, 22 February 2008 02:18 (sixteen years ago) link

Kip Winger played for Alice Cooper for a while, although not on any of the Coop's decent albums.
