Playing "We Are The Champions" when a sports team wins the championship -- Dud or big fat shitty dud?

It happens every year in every sport and I'm sick and tired of it beyond description.
Dumb question: do they play it after sports teams win in the UK as well?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:08 (nineteen years ago) link

how's about instead the chorus to "we will rock you" played ad infinitum on moments of tension in a game.

phil turnbull (philT), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:12 (nineteen years ago) link

they should play "i'm in love with my car" or perhaps "crazy little thing called love"

are queen the ultimate sports band?

I wish more of them would play the Rick Rubin remix of Rock You/Champions. It hits harder.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:16 (nineteen years ago) link

The Tampa Bay Lightning suck my cock every day of the week including Sundays and holidays.

Miss Lonelyhearts (Jaromil), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:19 (nineteen years ago) link

When the Wings won the cup in 1997 they played that shitty "Oh What a Night" song by the Four Seasons. I'll take Queen any day of the week over that, thanks.

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:22 (nineteen years ago) link

I haven't heard that remix in years. It's really good, but I got bored of hearing it all the time. Queen is out. How about Orbital's "Impact USA" instead?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, but you've got to appreciate the inherent irony of the preeminent meatnecked jock sports anthem (alongside with it's a-side, "We Will Rock You") being sung by the then GAYEST MAN ALIVE, GOD BLESS HIM!!!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Do they play Andrew W.K. a lot in arenas now? I haven't been following the sports for a while. (cuz i moved from philly last year and i want to kill andy reid and i just can't allow myself to care about the phillies after all this time and heartbreak and the flyers can kiss my ass cuz they apparently just like to hang out in the play-offs and never get the job done and please don't get me started about the sixers and now i live an hour from Boston but i'll be fucking dead before i root for the bruins or celtics or the friggin' patriots-who i don't hate, but i couldn't care less- and yeah the sox have schilling now which is cool and i've always been a fan but they are the fucking red sox!!! ya know?)

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:28 (nineteen years ago) link

i always thought it was weird that all the famous sports event songs (at least in the us) are by gays (queen) or pedophiles (gary glitter). all those football fans dont know what theyre getting into.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Alex so OTM it hurts.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:31 (nineteen years ago) link

But the U.S. has always loved Queen. Queen are beloved here.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:34 (nineteen years ago) link

also, let's not forget "Y.M.C.A." on that tip.

"I'm in Love With My Car" is being used in a Jaguar commercial right now.

The NHL used Andrew W.K. in their commercials a few years back. The one that goes "so let's get a party goin' (let's get a party goin') let's get a party goin'". But then, everybody uses Andrew W.K. in their commercials.

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:37 (nineteen years ago) link

now that conventional wisdom holds that Franz Ferdinand is the new Queen, we may be seeing a spate of "Take Me Out" snippets instead

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 03:23 (nineteen years ago) link

they should play "ogre battle" instead.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 03:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Well, sure, and the gay issue thing reminds me of the country rip of Crazy Little Thing Called Love.

jim wentworth (wench), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 03:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Franz Ferdinand is the new Queen?
"Take Me Out" mashed up with "Take Me Out to the Ballgame"?

I LOVE THAT SONG

David Allen (David Allen), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:13 (nineteen years ago) link

this sounds liek a cheesy 70s movie (well except in the early 90s) but i remember going to a campground one summer and my brother and sister were with me in a little recreation lounge with a pool table and juke box and we played "Oh What a NIght" over and over again while we all danced about the room and on the pool table. someone probabyl pretended to play a pool cue as a guitar. i cant remember.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:19 (nineteen years ago) link

it's beyond dud in a way that makes it classic. if the team you support has ever won a surprise championship, you'll know what i mean.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Alex OTM -- classic queer subversion. Next project: get Tom Robinson Band on the next volume of Jock Jams.

briania (briania), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:42 (nineteen years ago) link

It (the thread title qn) isn't as bas as when they play spandau ballet's "gold" at medal award ceremonies.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Alive?

Anyway. Just before the game kicks off, they should play Queen's "Play the game" and then they would know what to do.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:48 (nineteen years ago) link

"it's beyond dud in a way that makes it classic. if the team you support has ever won a surprise championship, you'll know what i mean."

You must be Dane. Seriously.

NUXX (NUXX), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Thats "Danish" to you non danish-speaking folks. *ahem*

NUXX (NUXX), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Utterly fucking classic. Exactly as ridiculous as any nation's celebration of a sporting victory.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:19 (nineteen years ago) link

Big, fat, smelly, steaming, recently shitted, shitty dud. From hell.

recently shat, you mean.

I hate sports.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:37 (nineteen years ago) link

If we're talking about AMERICAN football, a good runner-up for ambient song while the game is running would be "Keep Yourself Alive"...

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 20:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, and when the team needs a big play, they can play "I Want to Break Free".

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 21:33 (nineteen years ago) link

A Kind of Magic is played at Orlando Magic games from time to time, no joke... apparently Queen has a song for all sporting events...

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 23:39 (nineteen years ago) link

What's with music during a sports match anyway?

Is it to cover up how boring Basketball really is?

Bennö (Bennö), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 00:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Dud, obviously, unless it's YOUR team lucky (or talented!) enough to have won the big enchilada; then it's tolerable.

Beyond intolerable if you're a Calgary Flames supporter like (presumably) Miss Lonelyhearts.

And yes, "We Are The Champions" is still better than "Oh What A Night." (I remember that '97 Wings victory in question. Can't forget McCarty's goal on Hextall!)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 01:11 (nineteen years ago) link

i was at the 89' calgary flames final and when they won they played a michelle branch B side and everybody started crying because that song didn't exist yet. it was crazy. i couldn't sleep for 20 minutes.

luther, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:35 (nineteen years ago) link

be thankful you're not french and have to listen to the cover of "I will survive" by hermes whatever band each time the national football team is concerned...
this is torture and shouldn't be allowed by the geneva convention...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 14:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Thanks, Alex. Yes, "shat." Runnny & malodorous.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I can't get too worked up about "We Are the Champions", not while 2Unlimited gets blasted in every arena I go to.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 16:10 (nineteen years ago) link

See also "Ready to Go" by Republica, which gets played in a mix before Celtic matches together with the "Y'all ready for this" bit of "No Limits".

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 16:12 (nineteen years ago) link

anyone know if they play "Deacon Blues" for 'Bama home games?

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 16:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Do the Washington Redskins really play the first bars of Fugazi's "Waiting Room" during extended time-outs?

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 16:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Myonga - yeah, that goal was awesome!! Certainly will hold up as the highlight of McCarty's career. I have no idea where he pulled that one out of.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 16:24 (nineteen years ago) link

x-post

I've heard "Waiting Room" at Chicago White Sox games. Often, in fact.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 16:24 (nineteen years ago) link

x-post

I remember reading this quote somewhere, possibly in The Hockey News: "First, McCarty decks Claude Lemieux, then he scores the Cup-winning goal. He'll never have to buy a drink in Detroit ever again!"

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 10 June 2004 06:07 (nineteen years ago) link

I've attended a Seahawks game where Basement Jaxx's "Where's Your Head At?" was played in between downs.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 10 June 2004 06:21 (nineteen years ago) link

The Australian cricket team played and instrumental bit from Coldplay's Clocks as their play on song last season. I would have played the guitar riff from I'm Stranded myself.

just gonna say that the Roc-A-Fella crew/Kanye chipmunk'd version of this complete with Dame Dash shit-talking is pretty nice

one of 'em has a really interminable verse tho and I can't place who at the moment (it's not Kanye)
