I always liked their second album. And there's a little-heard 7" that was awesome.

I was going to say, I like Hazel a lot, but Team Dresch never did much for me. There was (I think) a Team Dresch spinoff (maybe) called the Third Sex that had a couple interesting records and a fun live show. They were on Chainsaw and from Portland, anyway.

That second album, Captain My Captain I think it's called, is great. I immediately thought Eleanor from the FFurnaces sounded a lot like Kaia from Team Dresch.

I got the second album for $3. It rules; totally awesomely dated cover art too :D

that's the one! "Take On Me" and "Don't Try Suicide" - emo: dykestyle! Awesome. Plus, "The Council" rocks

I love the opening guitar on this album!

Personal Best is my fav TD album. "Freewheel" and "Fagitarian and Dyke" are just awesome tracks.

Yeah, I've only heard a couple Team Dresch tracks (okay), but Hazel fuckin' ruled.

DARIN OTM. PERSONAL BEST PWNZ. THE SECOND RECORD IS WEAK. THEY WERE A GOOD BAND. A BIT TOO CARPET MUNCHER-GUSHY. BUT THEY ROCKED.

Both bands ruled, in different ways... but the first TD album is irresistible. And like 20 minutes long.

Totally great/underrated band (and related groups) here, methinks.

First album is a classic--one of my 90s faves. The second is pretty good--the opening and closing tracks, especially--and the new drummer is a plus, but it's not the same.

Which single were you guys refering to? The post-second-LP one with the different line-up? I haven't heard that. Or did you mean the one with "Hand Grenade"? That song is absolutely incredibly...!!!

The Butchies are great, too--love that varied first LP. And of course Kaia's stuff--the odd numbered LPs are fantastic, especially the most recent. What about Infinite Xs, anyone have that?

John - I don't remember which 7" it was - I'm thinking of the one with the pulp novel type cover, and the song that goes

"You super butch / punk ass motherfucker / come up here / and say that to my face!!!"

- that one was totally off the meter (and under the radar, methinks)

Oh, and how is that artwork "dated"? I always thought it was unique, to me. And cool. If some band eventually rips it off--er, "HOMAGE"es it--I just might have a hand in it...

John 2, Friday, 1 October 2004 23:45 (nineteen years ago) link

It's a good idea, but i think it's a little too early to reference (or else I'd totally be into doing it)

I'm a big Personal Best fan. Not so much with the second album. "Fagetarian and Dyke" is such a fantastic song, both lyrically and musically. (And yes, I belong to the contingent of dykes who thinks Kaia is a total foxx.)

seven years pass...

There's no Kaia (solo) thread at all and that disappoints me.

New album is fantastic.

two years pass...

My wife grew up besties with Kaia in a itty bitty Oregon town.

Anyway, this song is still incredible after nearly 20 years:

Way underrated band. Dragged their 2nd album out recently and liked it just as much as I did then.

Was disgusted when I read Sara Marcus' Girls to the Front book and it didn't so much as mention Team Dresch. There was plenty about the villainous Jessica Hopper, though. Talk about losing credibility.
