Napalm Death-post 1989: S/D and, yes, C/D?

I've just recently acquired Leaders Not Followers and Noise for Music's Sake and realised perhaps I shouldn't have given up on them after Bill Steer and Lee Dorrian quit following the Mentally Murdered EP. I had been cynical about the considerably more 'metal' direction they were going, but it seems I was dead wrong!
So, which are the best songs/albums, how do the two periods of the band compare (well, I suppose way more than two given the number of line-up changes) and who considers them classic or, indeed, dud?

You Suffer But Why-Classic!!

I'm not an expert on Napalm Death (though Scum is one of my favorites), but I really like Fear, Emptiness, Despair.

I stand by what I said here.

two months pass...
one of the best ten british bands ever deserve more than such a paltry thread. um so here is my napalm death "POX":

the missing link
mentally murdered (single vers)
unchallenged hate
scum
suffer the children
the world keeps turning
breed to breathe
abbatoir
the infiltraitor
NPFO

i am insanely excited about the new album.

dooooood, shop assistants & carcass in yer top 10!!! You are my new best friend. we'll just replace napalm death with the clash and THEN you've got ten.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 26 August 2004 21:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Hey wait, they're not called "THE Napalm Death," you can't actually like them.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 August 2004 21:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Though "The Carcass" sounds great, they should open for the Gathering.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 August 2004 21:55 (nineteen years ago) link

thanks mate. that was a kind of off the top of my head top 10, but it's fairly representative.

um, anyway. napalm death. i can't think of any other uk band that has been so good for so long.

xpost

fletcher dexter, Thursday, 26 August 2004 21:59 (nineteen years ago) link

um, my dying bride are beautiful doom metal and anathema were doom metal but now they make beautiful prog/space rock and they have both been making good records for 10 years or more. and they are both from the u.k.

also, check out ned's fave band Porcupine Tree. who i was listening to today.
