the 4 or 5 people who bought tackhead albums look up from their work, go thoughtful for a second and murmur, "hmm, that's nice."

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 24 June 2004 16:57 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, that was me too, actually

coming soon to a Wire column near you

bernard fowler is back on board

reading that line was enough to put me off forever.

stirmonster, Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, bringing in Fowler was the worst move they ever made.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:38 (nineteen years ago) link

This is great news, but I can fully agree the their albums were quite lacklustre. I always thought that Tackhead were a great singles band, and were truly amazing live when I saw them in Toronto circa 1988(?). I would also agree that Fowler sours the deal.
But, I know more than a couple of people who will flat out freak to pluto when they hear this!

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Of course, the difffference might be whether ASherwood tours with them!

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 24 June 2004 19:28 (nineteen years ago) link

The thing about Tackhead is, they're such comsummate musicians, they really needed a terrible but confident non-vocalist for balance and contrast. Where are you, Gary Clail?

*looks up from work, goes thoughtful for a second and murmurs, "hmm, that's nice." *

Hasn't Gary Clail gone back to scaffolding? I'm sure I've seen him around Bristle putting it up...

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 25 June 2004 08:48 (nineteen years ago) link

I wonder if he's still vegetarian?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 25 June 2004 09:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Foreman: Where's Gary? Is Gary in the area yet?

Scaffolder 1: He's in the basement boss. He wanted to see how low he could go.

Scaffolder 2: He's crying. He hit his head with a tack. I thought he was a hard man!

Scaffolder 1: Listen son - he may be a hooligan, but he's got emotions too.

col man i don't even remember you at that gig are you sure youwere there? i remember standing by the desk with gav smoking and clail was there rather than on stage and then i remember the announcement that everyone should evacuate their bowels and tackhead coming on and i remember the fucking atrocious hendrix medley.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 25 June 2004 10:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, I was there. The real high point was Mr Sherwood on the desk beforehand with Gary Clail on the mic, in the mix, teby and way back, as was the style of Mr Sherwood at the time. Such bass - I was in fear for my life at one point. Unforgettable. Tackhead I don't remember much at all. They did a cover of Hey Joe I think?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 25 June 2004 10:58 (nineteen years ago) link

teby = trebley

Even more bizarrely, g00gling reveals he's running a converted church as a guest house in Penzance.

Beef presumably not on the dinner menu.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 25 June 2004 11:32 (nineteen years ago) link

they should get mark stewart back in.

stirmonster, Friday, 25 June 2004 19:44 (nineteen years ago) link

No, not Hey Joe but another Hendrix tune: Crosstown Traffic.

veneman, Friday, 25 June 2004 21:07 (nineteen years ago) link

tackhead @ leeds in 87 was a stunning gig. gary clail/ams/on-u prior to foetus gig in 88 was the strangest thing i ever saw. i am very chuffed with this news (and its not really that weird considering Little Axe .. which featured them all !)

.. and yes i hard that gary was back in bristol .. yet to see him myself .. but one day i am sure i will bump into him ..

bring on the bass.
onwards. m.e/ireallylovemusic

two months pass...
so....
Has anyone seen them yet???
Three of my friends are driving 5 hours to see them tonight in Chicago.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:48 (nineteen years ago) link

think i'll go to the SF show next week :)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:45 (nineteen years ago) link

nine years pass...

feels weird ordering a new tackhead album in 2014.

but given that they all now acknowledge that the major label album sucked the big one, i have high hopes for the new stuff.

mark e, Saturday, 4 January 2014 15:26 (ten years ago) link

and i love how they continue to use the SOL for the cover art.

oh yes ..
this album is good.
all the promise of the early 12" chaos + vocals of bernard fowler.
a cover of david bowies 'i'm afraid of americans', and an 8 minute version of 'stealing' !!!
i am a very happy happy man ..
this is the tackhead album i have wanted for a long long time.

mark e, Friday, 10 January 2014 01:22 (ten years ago) link

of course, once i sober up, i deserve the right to deny all love of this ..

however, i suspect thats not going to happen as the digital remixes are immense.

mark e, Friday, 10 January 2014 01:24 (ten years ago) link

sober - ish.

this album is still immense.

best thing i have had stress test the ireallylovemusic soundsystem in a long long time.

yes, fowler is is a massive presence throughout, but the production is far more intense than the major label era material.

mark e, Friday, 10 January 2014 16:42 (ten years ago) link

three months pass...

I am listening to this now – saw it on Spotify, but never noticed it was new material. Even knowing the Bernard Fowler period, it's weird hearing them do tunes – it's even weirder to hear them do covers of the Ojays and Stevie Wonder.

Naive Teen Idol, Thursday, 24 April 2014 12:25 (ten years ago) link

it's not totally new.

a lot was done as part of a fan funded project a while back.

and yes, its a strange one, but i like it.

makes for a good mix of the bands major label era, and their hard edged material.

mark e, Thursday, 24 April 2014 12:39 (ten years ago) link

Agreed. The Funky President mix by Sherwood w the a Obama samples and Fowler doing a mean JB impression is pretty great. I love these guys.
