Recommend me a good Dylan live recording

Preferably his Judas / "Blood on the Tracks" era, and preferably slsk-able. I haven't been keeping up with the 'official' live Dylan CDs (Royal Albert Hall, etc) so it need not be totally obscure, but obscure is OK too. I've pretty much been listening to the Blood on the Tapes version of "Lily Rosemary & The Jack Of Hearts" on a loop for days

The Bootleg series 4. Someone says "Judas" and he says "noooh, it is You who is the Judasss"!!! Or is that Eddie Izzard?

i dont believe you. youre a liar. play fuckin loud!

66 "royal albert hall" is the ultimate. it may be my favorite live recording ever. at least up there with james brown live at the apollo 62.

has anyone gotten this 8 cd box set of the 66 world tour? i think i need it.

The Rolling Thunder Revue bootleg is good but the latest NYC Halloween concert is amazing. Dylan as you've never heard him before.

'Is that a protest song'.

My all time favorite live Dylan is Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue. Best singing he ever did.

The Halloween NYC concert is good too except when Joan Baez sings with him. I find those duets unlistenable.

I dunno. I get a thrill out of the background: Dylan knows he'll never be doing that kind of stuff again, while Baez thinks these good times will last forever. it adds a certain poignancy. as a companion/contrast to 'don't look back', it's just remarkable.

The Genuine Live 66 8-disc set is great. All the existing 66 soundboard recordings from the Hawks tour. There's also the mammoth 26 disc (I think) Jewels and Binoculars from the same period. It's got a lot of interviews along with the live stuff, some of which overlaps with Genuine 66, but it's a ton of fun, too.

Yes to Live 1975

Agreed that the bootleg series 4-6 are outstanding, and easily slskable.

The 1975 The Rolling Thunder Review is so punk rock. His singing's all guts and bile.

the genuine live 1966 box set is like 200 dollars though!!

Mick Ronson on '75 is the shit, even more than the Band on the Royal Albert Hall one, which I thought was the unbeatable shit when it first came out (legally). Just cave in and get both. The Halloween concert is great, but it doesn't really add much to the studio recordings of the songs until you're a full-fledged Dylanologist (and you ain't until you have the aforementioned 2 sets).

Further clarification on the Halloween concert: if I hadn't read Dylan bios and especially that "Postively 4th St." book by Hadju, I would have thought 'this sounds great, but I don't get the significance'. You can't really hear the audience being shocked by the arrangement and content of 'Gates of Eden', nor can you look inside Baez's heart during the duets.

I like the plain ol' "Hard Rain" album a lot more than "Live 1975" - I started a lame thread about it once - but that's just me. Anyway, "Hard Rain" should definitely be heard.

Has anyone heard the Rolling Thunder bootleg called "Hold the Fort, for What It's Worth"? I've been told that's great.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Thursday, 1 July 2004 23:20 (nineteen years ago) link

I also agree about the weakness of the Baez duets on the Halloween concert. "With God on Our Side," in particular, has so much more tension and subtlety in the album version.

Morris, I love "Hard Rain" too. "One too Many Mornings," "Shelter," and "Idiot Wind" are extraordinary, furious and desolate...have you seen the film? It was a CBS TV special, only shown once, widely bootlegged. Amazing as well, esepcially after listening to the album for years.

I heard it was a sleeping pill

No, sounds great! (I tried watching a fuzzy VHS copy of "Renaldo & Clara" once, but that's a different story.)

xpost
