Is Maria Mena's "You're The Only One" the new Worst Thing Evah?

I just heard her sing this song/tripe on Letterman, and it's the most moronic sub-Alanis piece of shit I've ever encountered.

I'm gonna d/l the mp3 just to make sure, maybe she's just not much of a live act-but unless it's dramatically better....ewwwwwwwwww.

I've heard the studio cut and done research, wait a sec....
By 2004 Mena was 18, and ready to take her dark-eyed glamour and smooth, faintly-alternative pop (aided in craft by Norwegian songwriter/producer Arvid Solvang) on to the international stage.
I thought something was up! It's Scandinavian assembly line lolitapop! But REALLY piling on the Alanis type vibe. There's even a pseudo-Liz Phair-type part where she tells the guy he's got a little dick even though he doesn't cuz if he knew was a big donger he had he's find a better girlfriend or something. This is SOOOOO BAD, I'm starting to like it! Ace of Base '04 style, baby!
Of course if she was American, that would ruin everything.

there's so many typos in that you'll just have to deal with it. Man, it's late...

You're pretty spot on, but at the same time I still find myself a little suckered in by its pop hooks.

The fact that she's NORWEGIAN, but has appropriated Alanis' accent/speech pattern almost EXACTLY makes it way more funny and interesting than it would be otherwise.

I know I'm getting worked up here, but I had NEVER EVEN HEARD OF THIS SHIT until tonight. I'd also like to point out that the backing band sounds precisely like a cross between the Queer Eye For The Straight Guy theme song and music from a feminine hygeine product commercial. Thank you and goodnight.

Oh man this is better than any Alanis song because she sounds genuinely disturbed rather than self-adoring.

OK I'm listening to it again now and its really only the verses that are a dead-on Alanis impersonation.

The chorus sounds like it was culled straight from an 80's teen movie.

did anybody else think that when TLC sang that "hangin out the passenger side..." line from "no scrubs", they sounded JUST like alanis? maybe i should post this in that other thread. anyway, just for that one line, but it always got me. got me SICK!

although i guess i did sort of have a soft spot for TLC...

Oh man this is better than any Alanis song

I might have to agree with you there. I mean this song is such a shameless soundalike that I actually listened to Jagged Little Pill last night before bed in an attempt to regain my sanity. By the end of the first track I had decided that this girl is much less annoying than Alanis. The only song on JLP I can say I like without irony(har!) is "Head Over Feet", which along with "Thank You", is the only song of hers I place any value on whatsoever. Of course I feel Alanis' lyrics are uniformly terrible, some of the worst I've ever heard. The Mena song's lyrics aren't as bad, but I haven't determined whether she wrote them herself or not. Anyone know the songwriting credit on this?
