can anyone recommend decent washington dc record stores? looking for any kind of good deals. or the "good" place, you know what i mean. whats the circuit? any good used places?

mas, Saturday, 24 July 2004 22:17 (nineteen years ago) link

the last one that was decent, DCCD on 18th st, closed a few months ago. I think there is still a used cd store down the street from where DCCD was, I forget what it's called but they do trades. DC is in dire need of a good store, it's only got Tower Records now (near Georgetown) and I guess there is also Olsson Books which sells music too, and maybe Second Story Books in Dupont has some used records. I'd say if you have a car, go to Joe's Record Paradise in Rockville, MD - good new/used vinyl selection and some decent used cds sometimes. There might be something in Arlington, I don't know. When in doubt, use the Yellow Pages.

DC suxx since Vinyl Ink closed.

adam (adam), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:02 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah back in the 90s you had Vinyl Ink, Phantasmagoria, Yesterday & Today, and Joe's. all within 10-15 min. drives of each other. Y&T and Vinyl Ink went to online-only business (http://yesterdayandtodayrecords.com/). unfortunately, George of Vinyl Ink passed away. sad, he was fucking cool as hell and so was his store.

Joseph Pot (STINKOR™), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:21 (nineteen years ago) link

If you have a car, go to Baltimore. Soundgarden, Reptilian, An Die Musik, etc...

Melody in Dupont can be worth a look-through.

I think there is still a used cd store down the street from where DCCD was, I forget what it's called but they do trades.

CD and Game Exchange is on 18th St., a few doors down from where it crosses Columbia Road. They have another location on Wisconsin Avenue, near the Tenleytown Metro stop.

If you've got a car, CD Cellar in Falls Church is worth the trip. Other than Smash! Records in Georgetown, I don't know where to buy vinyl in the DC area any more.

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:50 (nineteen years ago) link

CD/Game Exchange sucks. I grew up in Silver Spring so Vinyl Ink was the bomb and I was very saddened to hear of George's death. He turned me on to lots of cool stuff when I was young.

What happened to that Now Music and Fashion place?

adam (adam), Sunday, 25 July 2004 00:28 (nineteen years ago) link

oh yeah, Now Music is in Alexandria. never been there so I don't know how good it is.

the vinyl ink wall of shame used to infuriate me, limited edition stuff would show up a few months after release with a 9000% markup.

There is a nice little record shop on Connecticut Ave near the UDC/Van Ness metro stop - it's new, and is on the other side of the street from UDC, second floor of a kind of nondescript building near an Indian restaurant, I believe. I know that doesn't narrow it down much, but it's the best I can do! Just keep an eye out next time you go that way.. I can't remember the name but I stopped in last time I was in town and the guy was really nice, and they have used stuff & vinyl, though I can't speak for the vinyl selection as I didn't look though it. I bought an Erase Errata CD. fun.

daria g (daria g), Sunday, 25 July 2004 02:58 (nineteen years ago) link

CD Cellar now has an outlet in Arlington as well, between the Courthouse and Clarendon Metro stops.

I've been here for only 11 years, but I'm convinced the DC region can't support an independent music store; it has a hard enough time supporting regional chains. If anything has a chance of surviving, it better have a great freakin' location; in the city, near a metro, plenty of foot traffic, low rent...blah blah blah.

Evanston Wade (EWW), Sunday, 25 July 2004 05:32 (nineteen years ago) link

revolution records is the one in UDC. it's decent and they have a little bit of everything. and the guys who work there will order anything for you, no matter how hard it is to find.

CD/Game exchange is all over dc. theres one where DC/CD used to be, and theres on in tenleytown. they buy promos, and pay a lot for used cds, so they're cool in my book.

Olson's in Dupont has a best selection, but it's a little pricey.

there's a new one between the 9:30 club and the black cat thats supposed to be rad. they have only vinyl i hear.

costa! (costa!), Sunday, 25 July 2004 05:59 (nineteen years ago) link

whoops! lots of typos...

costa! (costa!), Sunday, 25 July 2004 06:03 (nineteen years ago) link

I work at CD Warehouse in Georgetown (30th and M). We're a small store but we carry a good variety of new CDs (some harder-to-find stuff too) and have a nice used selection that's always being replenished. I'm also working on improving the electronic section.

Melody Records in Dupont probably has the biggest selection that I've seen in DC. Revolution Records is small but has some decent stuff (nothing you can't find at CD Warehouse though). Their vinyl section is very small. They do have in-store performances every once in a while though.

The only place I know of for vinyl besides Smash Recorsd is DJ Hut in Dupont, above the Subway on 22nd and P (or around there somewhere). They have mainly rap and house and also some bargain bins.

The place that's near where DCCD used to be sucks. Yoshitoshi used to be in Georgetown but that closed down.

But, yeah- as Collardio said, Soundgarden and Reptilian Records in Baltimore are probably better than anything in DC.

smash in georgetown kicks ass for used vinyl... i've found some great stuff there......

i thought dccd was overpriced and the staff rude (once i bought an lp with a bad warp and they were like "tough")...

i didn't know DCCD closed :((((
Now! is probably really closed by, uh, now, haven't gotten an email from them in a while. they were going out of business from about november to may. CD Cellar in falls church is ok, as i remember, but nothing to get excited about. echo the baltimore sentiment.

i'll be in rockville the next two days visiting my moms, and will have to check out Joe's. never even heard of it!

two visits ago is when i stopped by Y&T to find it's doors closed. now i learn that they went on-line. yeah, d.c. sucks. always did, and maybe always will.

back in the day i used to work at Kemp Mill Records, which was a total horror show.

Try CDepot in College Park, MD. It's right next door to a great used instrument store, in case you're into guitars as well.

Smash is fucking awful. They sold me a damaged CD that I bought like 12 years ago, and refused to let me exchange it when I noticed the thing was scratched, right away (going so far as to accuse me of damaging it). They sell their new CDs open and out of the packaging (to discourage shoplifters, I suppose). I pledged I would forever badmouth them whenever I got the chance. I meant it, goddamn it!

So fuck you, Smash.

I don't really get the appeal of D.C. It's expensive as hell but there's not much going on, and no good record stores. Seems like you don't get much for your money.

crooked beat is a happy new addition. those guys are indeed great.

As Vincent Furnier might say, welcome to my nightmare. Seriously, though — DC has more opportunity for professional fulfillment than probably any city in the US. And when the life thread is "TS: Professional Fulfillment/Good Record Stores", there's really no contest.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 21:22 (nineteen years ago) link

It's still cheaper than NYC (although not by much, and probably not for much longer).

That vigorous nodding sound you don't hear is me agreeing with N.T.I.

Plus, how much does anybody really depend on a record store nowadays?

I hear that one is able to find lots of new music on this thing called the InterWeb. Bill Bradley invented it.

Or something.

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 22:21 (nineteen years ago) link

I used to haunt DJ Hut when it was 12-Inch Dance Records, in 1988-89. I lived in a basement apartment off of Dupont Circle and paid $250 a month in rent with three roommates. There was (and still is) a super-cheap Greek place right around the corner, with the Metro right there, and a (now closed) radical bookstore nearby. At night you could take the Metro pretty late. Clubs were lax about carding. House music was getting huge. Go-go shows were still going strong. The (old) 9:30 Club was my first First Avenue. It was fun being 18 there.

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 13 January 2005 02:38 (nineteen years ago) link

I know there was violence at the time, and SE was hit the hardest. It was "the murder capital of the world." But most of the city felt oddly safe.

One other thing: There was this incredible record store in NE (or was it just Eastern NW) whose name I forget. It was stacked to the ceiling with old vinyl. You could play records and buy old 45s cheap. I bought all the old funk singles. This was a couple years before the funk reissue boom, so the guy who owned the place, for $25, would tape you every Parliament-Funkadelic record he had. Anybody know this place? I got a haircut in NE a couple years ago and the barber told me it had closed years ago.

I saw John Cale there.

Interesting to see this thread revived as I was viewing it recently without reviving it. I used to love Y&T and Vinyl Ink a lot back in the day. Saw an awful lot of bands at the old 930. Got real nostalgic about it this summer when I started listening to 9353 a lot. I can see a hell of a lot of detail of the old 930's insides if I just close my eyes. Can almost feel the drafts!

Can't figure out how I managed to miss that place called Joe's, though. I do remember Phantasmagoria. Got Cabaret Voltaire's "Nag Nag Nag" 12" there.

Well, I travel a lot and have visited many used cd stores. CDepot certainly has the deepest used selection in the immediate DC area. But I would say that the prices are actually on the high end - stuff marked $9.99 that would be $6.99 or $7.99 at most other used stores.

Edward Bax (EdBax), Thursday, 13 January 2005 15:51 (nineteen years ago) link

I do most of my driving in Northern Virginia. I used to be a dj at WMUC I confess. I was the music director way back in 1982...

re buying cds, the pickings were pretty slim the last time I was at Cd cellar in Falls Church. Plus kinda pricey for used cds- $ 9.99...

Are these used cds stores collaborating to keep prices high? Maybe I should get soulseek and just download?

steve-k, Thursday, 13 January 2005 15:55 (nineteen years ago) link

I must admit, I've never been to CDepot. How to get to from Adams Morgan?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 13 January 2005 16:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Metro? Not sure if the College Park stop is close enough, or if there's a bus route nearby. Rhode Island Ave. to Route 1, College Park , driving maybe . Try mapquest.

Maybe it's just a coincidence some of the area cd stores are all trying to get $9.99 for used cds.

steve-k, Thursday, 13 January 2005 16:48 (nineteen years ago) link

It's not walking distance from Metro, by the way, but there is a bus.

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Thursday, 13 January 2005 17:03 (nineteen years ago) link

CD Cellar does, however, have the 'slightly scratched' bin ranging down into the $2 range and everything in between. Plus the $1.99 bin so large that I no longer have the time to dig through it.

Edward Bax (EdBax), Friday, 14 January 2005 01:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, yeah, a little more love for the departed DCCD. Great store. I had the pleasure of seeing Marty Willson-Piper (of The Church) perform an in-store and then digging through the bins with him and comparing purchases. Watched him try to push some Television cds on some of the other folks.

Edward Bax (EdBax), Friday, 14 January 2005 01:39 (nineteen years ago) link

CDepot's used prices aren't all that high, but they're fixed. Stuff stays the same price for years even if no one buys it. You won't find anything cheaper than $5.99 (and that's for discontinued versions of albums that have since been remastered.) Otherwise, all used CDs have the same price (as do all new CDs for the most part). Used copies of full-priced albums are $8.99 ($9.99 if it's a new release) and $7.99 for catalog titles that normally go for $10 or $11 new. A budget section would do them very very well. I mean, there's a very good reason why they have the deepest stock in the area... LOTS OF IT ISN'T GOING ANYWHERE! (well, and they pay customers best for their trade-ins, so there's a lot of turnover) Yeah, um, I worked there too. I think there are at least four of us on this board.

I think Roadhouse Oldies is still open, it's not far from Joe's Record Paradise. I think dc go-go outlet P.A. Palace still has 2 stores in Maryland in Forestville Mall and Iverson Mall.

curmudgeon, Monday, 19 March 2012 13:46 (twelve years ago) link

roadhouse oldies moved like a block at some point in the last few years, still great tho. when i was 15 or 16 i was buying a copy of superfly on lp there and the dude behind me in line looks me right in the eye and asks, "white boy, what the fuck you know about 'freddie's dead'?"

adam, Monday, 19 March 2012 14:04 (twelve years ago) link

SOM is good! A few people have mentioned that it was on the pricier side, which I could see, but the selection is good, which is more important to me. I grabbed the Ramones' End of the Century in great condition for $8, which I thought was fair.

Don't sleep on the Music & Game Exchange 1/2 block north of Joe's -- pulled some good stuff out of the new arrivals and $1 bins there. My boy found a Fairport test pressing in the $1 bin but it got yanked at the register.

Joint Custody has been killing it lately.

Arlington Flea Market starts up again this weekend, might go see what that's all about. I think it is Saturday morning.
