Any ideas for instrumental, gritty, dark, funk? Axelrod, DJ Shadow, Malcolm Catto...anyone or any tracks to suggest? I'm new here and I'm overwhelmed with you guys. Thanks.

Search compilations done by Keb Darge, especially all three volumes of "Legendary Deep Funk" on BBE. Also might want to check out the Funky 16 Corners comp if you haven't already.

Funky 16 Corners is plenty funky, but is it 'Deep Funk'?

This isn't at all original, but some James Brown stuff is deep, deep funk. Search Funky People vol. 1&2, Payback, and In the Jungle Groove.

I'm always looking for something that's deeper and funkier. i want something that is so deep and so funky. after getting a funky record, i often wish the sound was just a little bit more stinky and mucky.

The Counts "What's up Front that counts"

Yeah, 16 Corners isn't 100% "deep funk".

For some modern day stuff, check out one of the (many) albums by Burnt Sugar. Not always deep funkish, but they are one of the few new funk bands (that I know) who push the experimental envelope.
