Studio rat who has put out 4 cds in a short amount of time. What sayeth ILM? C or D? I say C if for no other reason than the song Bill Gates Must Die but also I find all his cds enjoyable, especially his latest Cellar Door.

i haven't worked out if i like cellar door or not. it changes with the weather.

Time Travel is Lonely is C.

Garibaldianne (Garibaldianne), Sunday, 1 August 2004 03:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Definitely classic. One of my current faves, reinforced after seeing him live a few weeks ago. Cellar Door is an incredible album, and Time Travel is Lonely isn't far behind. Mass Suicide whatever is only okay, but I do enjoy most of the MK Ultra stuff. Haven't heard the American 4-Tracker album yet.

He's a smart lyricist and songwriter, his production is spotless, and he puts on a good show. From the little I've seen, he also comes across as very fan-friendly.

Okay, I listened to Cellar Door properly last night and yes, it's excellent.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 2 August 2004 07:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, it's sitting somewhere in my top 10 this year so far, even though it took me a couple listens to really get into it. I had to be paying attention.

JC-L (JC-L), Monday, 2 August 2004 12:09 (nineteen years ago) link

Been a fan since MK Ultra - Cellar Door and Fourtracker are my faves, Time Travel close behind, Mass Suicide is a tad flawed on too many fronts. Perhaps the best character-actor singer/songwriter working today.

What I've never been able to figure out is why (some? most?) females have intensely bad visceral reactions to 'Slice. I saw him in Wash. and Philly earlier this year + in NYC a few years back... at each show, a lot of girls left after a few songs with twisted-up faces, and a few dragged their male friends out as well (when he opened for Pedro, most of them came back later). Played pre-release copy of Cellar Door for an (ex-)g/f in the car and she complained about how horrible it was for a whole week.

I mean, he's "cute," right?

MC Frosty Flake, Monday, 2 August 2004 13:27 (nineteen years ago) link

He has to be one of the cutest guys in rock right now. But maybe that's what makes his songs so disturbing live...

JC-L (JC-L), Monday, 2 August 2004 14:02 (nineteen years ago) link

Fourtracker is classic. Plus, listen to the MK Ultra song "Letting Go". Totally classic.

Revive this sucker. Cellar Door has had a long shelf life for me. Will no doubt end up being one of my favorites this year.

Revive. Pixel Revolt is here.

First reaction: better than Cellar Door; worse than LADOAA4-T; the production is impeccable; Billy Corgan might be interested in following in Bill Gates's footsteps (tee-hee) after hearing "Radiant With Terror" (I mean, ho-lee shit does that thing sound like "Disarm." Pitchfork was charitable calling it a "kissing cousin." A genitally conjoined twin is more like it).

Revive.

Double suprise about the lack of content here - maybe his material doesn't have enough handles to grab hold of???

Cellar Door, Two-Tracker, an Pixel Revolt are mostly brill - new album due in Aug 2007 (although the new track he played at a recent live show was tediously repetative).

JV's phrasing is inspired and his melodies are enveloping. The live show (from the Independent in San Francisco) on his website has some fantastic side and session work. Most of all, he makes it all look easy.

JV is one of the best pop auteurs around today, and a helluva nice guy to boot. I really wish I could catch a show on his current tour - he's offering to let anyone come onstage and sing lead vocals for a song of their choice, or to play bass on one of two songs.

St3ve Go1db3rg, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 18:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Had the pleasure of touring with him. Amazing person, great performer. But I stress amazing person - everything you've herad about JV is true - he took care of us on the road like no headlining band before or since. One of the last totally sincere, genuine, no bullshit guys left.

Also, Tiny Telephone = classic to the max.

Manalishi, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 19:54 (seventeen years ago) link

does he wear his on the hip or in a shoulder holster?

RJG, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 21:01 (seventeen years ago) link

No one on this thread even knows what you're talking about, dude.

And he seems like more of a shoulder holster dude, maybe cross draw style - he's too skinny to get away with pocket carry, that's for sure.

Manalishi, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 22:19 (seventeen years ago) link

I knew what he was talking about.

I'm kind of sad I missed a show of his last week, mostly due to laziness. He's one of those people I probably wouldn't have troubled to seek out on my own due to my tastes, but the three times I've seen him have been great.

Revive. Emerald City is, eh, out there somewhere.

Only heard the first track at the moment since I can't stop repeating it for now

StanM, Monday, 25 June 2007 10:50 (sixteen years ago) link

So much is going on in the first track with the fluttery reverb, piano, harmonies, and some sort of rapid, staccato, chimey business in the background. He blends it all in and out to great effect, though. Dude always seems to have such a great hold on his music/studio.

finally got around to hearing Emerald City today. it's typical Vanderslice, which isn't a bad thing in my mind. he's very prolific as i never got around to hearing the last album. before i know it he has a new one out...just checked Amazon, he has released six albums (debut in 2000) in seven years.

Bee OK, Thursday, 2 August 2007 02:17 (sixteen years ago) link

I think it's great. His best, easily.

I've been wanting to hear it, but haven't gotten to it yet. I still really love Pixel Revolt.

From John’s website:

"Happy fall everyone. I’ve had a good year of recording, working at Tiny Telephone, buying all kinds of crazy heirloom tomatoes at the Alemany farmer’s market, and living the domestic life. Let’s celebrate by downloading my new EP, Green Grow The Rushes." Green Grow the Rushes is a lovely EP John is giving away for free at http://www.johnvanderslice.com/

I've been listening to a side project from the TrueAnon podcast where their producer Yung Chomsky has created an audio documentary of the history of the Tiny Telephone studio via interviews with John Vanderslice and a number of the collaborators/musicians who recorded there.

On all the usual podcast places, here's a soundcloud playlist: https://soundcloud.com/trueanonpod/sets/keep-the-dream-alive

hits all the notes you'd expect so far, the old weird SF and its decline as the city changes, the vagaries of running a studio, etc
