Chaka Khan: Search and Destroy

Apparently, this hasn't been done before.

I don't have as much of her stuff as I'd like. I'd like lots of her disco/funk/Stevie Wonder-inspired stuff and would like to avoid some of those slushy ballads she did later in her career. Where should one start, on such a quest??

slushy ballads="Sweet Thing"????????

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Don't know - I've only ever heard a copy of her best of, which had a few ballads on it that seemed a little bit like filler. I couldn't tell you which songs they were, exactly. If you think 'Sweet Thing' is good, then I'll probably believe you.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Rufus years are stompin', "Tell Me Something Good" and "Sweet Thing" which is one o' the all time classic soul ballads

The Rufus farewell concert "Stompin' at the Savoy" functions as (imo) a really good best of for them while also giving you the beginnings of Chaka's solo hits.

There is a solo Chaka greatest hits disc that provides the hits ("I feel For You", "Through the Fire" and odd ones like "Night in Tunisia") but you have to dig thru albums for her best work.

Between the two tho, most popular stuff should be covered.

S: i like the first solo album "chaka" from 79. great arif mardin production. some love is a favourite off this.

"Live In Me" is a personal favourite; "Clouds" is a stone cold classic; the vocal performance on "Night In Tunisia" is something like a phenomenon.

I'm listening to the early eighties Arif Mardin-helmed recordings. Only a couple of classics on each but consistent as hell.

Listening to What Cha Gonna Do for Me right now, really into the version of 'Night in Tunisia.'

think her most solid record is possibly the 1982 s/t, though i never hear anyone talk about it.

i of course love destiny but i would force myself to love any album with "love of a lifetime" on it

I had a great time listening to those records for this piece: http://daily.redbullmusicacademy.com/2013/03/chaka-khan-solo

Just noticed that on Spotify the tracks (all but one) on the first two Chaka Khan albums are now credited to a 'Lew Hahn' as well. Turns out he was an additional recording engineer on the Chaka album, who also did remixing for it, and is credited for recording and mixing on Naughty (on Discogs, not on the original album sleeve, fairly or unfairly). In other words, he didn’t even write, produce or play on any of the tracks. But every time songs like “I’m Every Woman” or “Clouds” are streamed (including when it’s from some compilation), it’s not just added to Chaka’s tally but to his as well. That seems like some bullshit. Anyone know what this is about? Is it related to the equal billing producers now get for remixes they make for tracks by other artists (which is fair), and did this guy jump retroactively on this opportunity or something?

Dang! As far as legacy artists making vital contemporary music goes, most of them do a worse job than Chaka does here. This song is HAWT

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 26 June 2018 23:43 (five years ago) link

most of them do a FAR worse job! but seriously, i am almost shocked by how impressed i am with this new single

one of my thoughts after watching the video was "this needs an extended mix". and lo and behold there is one! of course there is. there's also an additional remix by switch, who afaict also produced the original track w/ someone named sarah ruba

[/i]What is the next album you have coming?

I’m working on a Joni Mitchell project right now, who’s a great friend. I have her blessing. I’m doing my favorite songs of Joni’s. Not her hits — the songs that have kept me alive on tour. When I’m on the bus, I always put on Joni Mitchell. She would revive me, in a big way — the music, the things she said, the philosopher in her. She’s my favorite writer, singer-songwriter. I don’t even remember when I first met her; it’s been a while.[/i]

Your career has spanned so many eras, do you miss things from any period in particular?

Working in the ’80s with [the producer] Arif Mardin, in New York, really made my life happen. I really miss him. And he challenged me vocally and musically, and I miss that kind of interaction. The music I did in the ’80s I think was my best music. Working with Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Chick Corea — all the greats that I grew up listening to

curmudgeon, Saturday, 23 February 2019 17:01 (five years ago) link

I'm on this gossip site which publishes blind items. They had one on Chaka. They described her as a one hit wonder. Hilarious.

nathom, Saturday, 23 February 2019 17:25 (five years ago) link

her new album is very solid front to back. for pursuing such a defined aesthetic it actually thoughtfully covers quite a bit of ground sonically + naturally her vocals are great

dyl, Saturday, 23 February 2019 18:49 (five years ago) link

Her new album is solid and she blew the crowd away at Pitchfork last July. Don't think anyone expected that performance to be other than tepid yawn-legacy-act.
