23 Skidoo

Not a classic or dud, or a search or destroy. Just a coupla questions. Anybody know anything about the rumored re-release of all the 23 Skidoo albums on Ronin? Amazon have listed them for months and the Ronin website seems to indicate that they're out, but has anyone seen them on the streets? Not even Sister Ray or Selectadisk knew anything about them when I was in there last.

There is a new 23 Skidoo album, which I was disappointed by. Also I bought the Andrew Weatherall 9 o'clock drop CD to get 'Coup' and 'Vegas el Bandito'. Lots of other great non-23 Skidoo stuff on there too!

I asked this question on my blog recently.

Andy W compilation 9 o'clock drop is a very fine album

although last year 23 skidoo said they would re release the albums on CD. There is no news at the moment ! very annoying.

I am keen to get my hands on them: "Urban Gamelan", "The Culling Is Coming" and "Seven Songs" . They have been unavailable for a very long time.

Any further news on 23 Skidoo I will post on my blog, and to this thread.

Also I would interested in a re release of Clock DVA: advantage album from the same period.

Pretty much unrelated: has anyone heard the Disco Not Disco comp - punky cover, compilation of various edgy early 80s new york tunes. Seems to have slabs of Arthur Russell on it, which is great. Seems also to have slabs of Laswell, which is less so. Opinions?

Re: "Disco Not Disco" - I've listened to it in a store and it sounded pretty good, along the same lines as the more adventurous stuff on The Loft releases. Of course it's that sort of avant-cool music that is pleasant on first listen but doesn't really bowl you over until about the third or fourth. To make an example, I was a bit mystified as to the legend surrounding "Is It All Over My Face" when I first heard it, but it's since been one of my most-played songs all summer.

So Dr. C "9 o'clock drop" is worth getting? I had it in my hands last week and opted for something different. Is it a mix-cd by the way?

Omar, Monday, 26 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Omar. Stop what you're doing right now, get your coat, get your money and get back to that record store to buy '9 o'clock Drop'! It's essential!

It's not a mix CD. Just 13 'old school' trax from the early/mid 80's. As I said, I bought it to get the 23 Skidoo trax mainly, but there are some real gems that I didn't expect to find. The opener "Nice Mover" by Gina X is actually from 1979, and is unbelievable - a kind of early electro Kraftwerky groove. There's also some great bass- heavy tracks from Shriekback and 400 Blows, and ACR's 'Waterline' is also better than I remembered.

The only track I don't really like is Colourbox's 'Looks like we're shy one horse', although for a couple of people I've spoken to, it's the highlight of the whole album.

I hope Weatherall plans to do more of these.

I'm on the motherfucker (since you're to be trusted ;). I'm getting it tomorrow then. But yeah, i was scanning the tracklisting and it all looked very mysterious and interesting, sort of a lost future. Erm 'Warm Leatherette" wouldn't be that song Chicks on Speed cover? Because that's amazing stuff.

Omar, Monday, 26 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Omar - you're doing the right thing! Dunno about a Chicks on Speed Cover, but there was a famous one by Grace Jones!

The original 'Warm Leatherette' was a double a-side with 'TVOD', as far as I remember. A real one-off. The Normal was Daniel Miller, the Mute Records founder.

Dr. C, Monday, 26 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Intrigueing stuff. On first listen i esp. love "Nice Mover" and (of course) "Looks like we're shy one horse" ;)(reminds me of early The Orb). Chicks on Speed indeed did a blinding cover-version of "Warm Leatherette". I stil have to make sort of a translation back to the 80s (not exactly my favorite decade) with all those slapped bass sounds and every one trying to sing like a German terrorist. Good track by Aswad by the way.

Omar, Tuesday, 27 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I said it was 'old school'! ;) I know what you mean about having to re-tune your ears. A lot of those tracks sound wierd 15+ years on - in particular the lack of 'hidden detail' compared with electronic/dance music these days. There's little layering of sound, for example on 'Coup' EVERYTHING is roughly the same level in the mix including deafening congas and timbales, when they appear. Still sounds breaktaking though - in my top 5 tracks of any genre, ever.

So - who are all those voices on 'Just Like Everybody' - arms dealers, torturers, CIA? Anyone know the story.

Yeah, I've always wondered what that's from. My guess is a movie.

Albums are being rereleased with loads of goody extras.

There isn't enough about this band on ILX. I'd like to know the answer to Ned's question above.

What sort of goody extras?

Alex in SF, Thursday, 6 November 2008 00:39 (fifteen years ago) link

the singles, mostly. there's a compilation that rounds up the stuff that gets missed, too.

oh, that's the comp. "most of the tracks and mixes on this double CD set are exclusive, and are not repeated on the other 23 Skidoo CDs in LTM's reissue program", apparently.

What fuck "JLE Mix" of "Coup"?

The answer is NOT Volkswagen (Marcello Carlin), Thursday, 6 November 2008 08:52 (fifteen years ago) link

it's a slightly different monitor mix of "coup" with the intro from the urban gamelan version (aka g.i. fuck you)

stirmonster, Thursday, 6 November 2008 10:49 (fifteen years ago) link

Fair enough - I was afeared that it was going to be some rubbish Big Beat remix.

-------------------------------------

On Saturday 24th of march 2012 the Electrowerkz hosts the official launch party
for Strut records Trevor Jackson compiled METAL DANCE compilation.

‘Metal Dance’ mines deep and hones in on the more underground and danceable side
of industrial, post-punk and EBM (Electronic Body Music), a phrase coined by Ralf Hütter of Kraftwerk but honed by later bands like DAF and Front 242 as socialist realist aesthetics were dragged onto the dancefloor during the mid-‘80s. Jackson cherry-picks classics and rarities from this era. Featuring seminal artists of the time Cabaret Voltaire, Nitzer Ebb, Yello, Alien Sex Fiend & Pete Shelly. He'll be spinning floor filling treasures from his expansive record collection, focusing his selection on tracks related to the compilation, both classic and contemporary.

Appearing live for the first time in well over a decade will be the legendary 23 SKIDOO, specially reforming for the launch (their seminal track 'coup' appears on the compilation). The band released a series of genre-defining records fusing post-punk, dub, industrial, world and hip-hop styles during 1979-1987, their appearance on the 24th will be as much a celebration of their highly influential recordings as it will be an education to those in attendance who were never fortunate enough to experience their visceral audio visual assaults first time around
