Having Lovesexy

Lemme tell ya, it's CLASSIC! Especially if you've got one of the banded promo copies on vinyl. As I *ahem* happen to do.

briania (briania), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 13:45 (nineteen years ago) link

They unbanded it?

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 13:46 (nineteen years ago) link

i have one of those copies.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 13:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, it originally came out unbanded, with each side grooved as one long track. This was apparently done to facilitate the nude one's view of the album as a complete, integrated listening experience. The CD issue solved this, of course.

briania (briania), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 13:50 (nineteen years ago) link

i thought all vinyl copies were banded......

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 13:51 (nineteen years ago) link

the CD is a pain in the arse!

stevie (stevie), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 13:51 (nineteen years ago) link

How sarcastic are you with that last comment, Briania?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 13:51 (nineteen years ago) link

the black album is better than lovesexy. or at least, the black album and lovesexy could have made a great single album. one side, black, the other LS. or a great double album package.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 13:52 (nineteen years ago) link

xpost: sark intended. It's nice to be able to cue up just Anna Stesia if the mood should strike you, for instance.

I agree with DVD that the two could've made a great double LP, but NOT that Black is significantly "better" than Lovesexy. I probably prefer the latter.

briania (briania), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 13:55 (nineteen years ago) link

First side of LoveSexy with second side of Black Album?
I thought "banded" meant all the songs run together...
In vinyl pressing, one can make the band marks without affecting the sound.

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 13:57 (nineteen years ago) link

I would probably rank not being able to cue up "Anna Stesia" at will #1 in my short list of frustrations with physical recording production choices. (I'm entirely serious - it's one of my favorite 100 songs).

southern lights (southern lights), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah the first time I heard Anna Stesia it was on the radio. Blew my mind. Then the album came out and I was all WTF?!!?!

Xpost to Sexy: "banded" means the tracks are separated by an ungrooved "band," as most albums are. I know you can make cue marks to show where a track begins, but god forbid I should ever have to do so. I shudder to think how you would go about making band marks, and it would certainly have to affect the sound, wouldn't it?

briania (briania), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:06 (nineteen years ago) link

You can see from the relative density etc of grooves where tracks on unrilled/banded records are anyway

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Having "Lovesexy" is a wonderful thing tho. About the only GREAT Prince rec I can think of that seems kinda underrated (at least by me, I used to claim it was my very fav for a while)

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:11 (nineteen years ago) link

I saw the man last night in Boston - it was amazing, and I was surprised to hear "Shhh" from The Gold Experience.

Nothing but "Alphabet St." from Lovesexy though.

southern lights (southern lights), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:13 (nineteen years ago) link

xxxpost: a-ha, got it. You can't make cue marks by yourself, though; it's done in the mastering phase.

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:15 (nineteen years ago) link

meaning Prince deliberately banded the record to thwart individual track selecting.

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, he was in full-on frustrating genius mode at the time.

briania (briania), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:18 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd much rather an indexed CD. The unbanded/unindexed idea as carried out on the Lovesexy vinyl is a lot more effective than it was on CD, where you can't drop the needle approximately.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:55 (nineteen years ago) link

You mean it's more effective, when it's at its least effective as you can avoid listening to it in full.

Of course I was still sad enough to download Lovesexy and just split it up according to songs when burning it.

I'm also petty enough to say they screwed up when doing the CD - it should be two tracks as with side 1 & 2 of the lp version - Dance On does not tun into Anna Stesia

Jedmond (Jedmond), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 15:12 (nineteen years ago) link

i didnt get why it wasnt tracked anyway. its not like all the tracks run right into each other. they even have silence between a few.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 15:23 (nineteen years ago) link

"Concept," dude...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 15:28 (nineteen years ago) link

It's a good record, why not just listen to the whole thing? And you'll be making Prince happy!

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 19 August 2004 00:48 (nineteen years ago) link

can someone please tell me what in god's name this thread is all about?!!

have they re-released it or wha'?

piscesboy, Thursday, 19 August 2004 11:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 19 August 2004 11:44 (nineteen years ago) link

oh right i getcha.

meanwhile when the hell is this ere PURPLE RAIN 2 disc-er coming out?

piscesboy, Thursday, 19 August 2004 11:50 (nineteen years ago) link

the PR 2DVD set is out now in the US... there hasnt been a date set for the album yet. hope they do a good job of it though.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Thursday, 19 August 2004 11:59 (nineteen years ago) link

The tracked versions (available to radio dj's for "alphabet st.") used to sell in the hundreds of dollars; with the advent of mp3/cdburners, I made my own version of a tracked mix as soon as I got a computer.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:02 (nineteen years ago) link

eh, Purple Rain 2-disc DVD? what the hell is that? and where can I get it?

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:05 (nineteen years ago) link

its only out in the US so far.....has extras, videos and commentary i believe.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:07 (nineteen years ago) link

I think German (or maybe all European) CD releases of Lovesexy are tracked now.

Xpost

All the Prince videos relating to Purple Rain are contained, as well other Prince productions for the movie - Time etc.

Pity they're not releasing any live footage from First Avenue to go with it - just a MTV award I think.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:11 (nineteen years ago) link

well I'm in the US, and I don't see this listed on Amazon, so I'm wondering where else I should look for it.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Is still want a comprehensive Prince Video compilation - even if only WB period.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:12 (nineteen years ago) link

uhm, there *is* a comprehensive WB era videos collection - it came out the same time as the big Singles 3-CD box, same packaging, etc.

Dunno if I should get this. I already have SO much Prince ephemeralia...

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Shakey, if your talking about Prince - The Hits Collection - hooboy is it not comprehensive - I don't think it even has "When Doves Cry".

Jedmond (Jedmond), Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:17 (nineteen years ago) link

hm, wow you're right, this isn't complete at all. For some reason I thought it had more on it. "Songs Include: Peach, Uptown, 1999, Alphabet St., Sign 'O' The Times, Diamonds & Pearls, Controversy, Dirty Mind, I Wanna Be Your Lover, Little Red Corvette, I Would Die 4 U, Raspberry Beret, Kiss, Cream, 7"

prince was never a great videos artist from that list. although the 80s ones at least have a certain charm.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Friday, 20 August 2004 09:36 (nineteen years ago) link

can someone please tell me what in god's name this thread is all about?!!

The CD and vinyl present the record as, respectively, one and two long tracks. It's supposed to be a "piece." Briania had a vinyl version with regular "bands" that showed where each song began. We're happy for her.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 20 August 2004 14:45 (nineteen years ago) link

six years pass...

was there a poll? can't find it for the life of me if so...

piscesx, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 05:25 (twelve years ago) link

three years pass...

intellectually, this album has a lot of flaws, just in the sense of how a lot of it doesnt really seem properly finished (how good would dance on have been if it had a bit more to it?). but it has such an amazing feeling of pure inspiration running through it, it has to be one of his best. listening to it now for the first time in years, glam slam is so brilliant, just because it sounds like he starts the song again three times! "this thing we got its alive" sounds exactly right, for the whole album.

StillAdvance, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 22:50 (nine years ago) link

I'm a fan (I really think I have to play it through from the start when it's on) but a part of me will always wonder what it would be like had it come out in 89 - assuming he gave more time to SOTT

Master of Treacle, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 23:07 (nine years ago) link

The Hits sucks...iirc some of the songs even fade early or are like these edited single versions

Iago Galdston, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 23:14 (nine years ago) link

at least they're edited versions of the right mixes unlike The Immaculate Collection.

so that Purple Rain 2-disc reissue set mentioned upthread is ten years late?

piscesx, Wednesday, 25 March 2015 01:35 (nine years ago) link

Ahah. Ready for the Purple Rain 40 anniversary ?

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 25 March 2015 07:31 (nine years ago) link

The older I get, the better this album sounds.

Shoutout to the extended ten minute mix of 'I Wish U Heaven.'

the proto-gfunk bass on Anna Stesia is sooooooooo slick

Neanderthal, Sunday, 24 April 2016 21:26 (seven years ago) link

Yeah I don't see this album as a drop-off in quality (except in the very narrow sense of being the album after SOTT). It's such a relaxed and joyful album to listen to (though that description maybe undersells how hard it hits in parts). I feel like every genius artist with an extensive release history should have an album something like this in their back catalogue.

Tim F, Sunday, 24 April 2016 22:02 (seven years ago) link

I just relistened. Unlike a similar relaxed and joyful album like 4 or New Morning, not one of these songs besides "Alphabet St" is essential. This and ATWIAD remain his worst eighties albums, but this is worse. I wouldn't miss these songs if he'd shelved them.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 24 April 2016 22:31 (seven years ago) link

i am soooooooooooo not on yr wavelength on this one mang. Anna Stesia, Glam Slam, I Wish U Heaven are all on mah list.

and ATWIAD rulz

scarcity festival (Jon not Jon), Sunday, 24 April 2016 23:49 (seven years ago) link

Honestly, I'd place this album in my shortlist of best Prince albums. All killer, no filler.

Austin, Monday, 25 April 2016 01:11 (seven years ago) link

Negative reactions to this record always perplexed me. It has a few dull spots but most of his albums do. Eye Know, i wish u heaven, alphabet st, dance on, anna stesia are all top shelf imo.

Alfred not being into it particularly surprises me

Tim F, Monday, 25 April 2016 01:25 (seven years ago) link

Yeah sorry Alfred. I had to LOL at "Batman better than Lovesexy" . Can I have what you're smoking?

Lovesexy is also a KILLER headphone/earbud album. It's probably the last time until maybe "Symbol" where his music sounded expansive. From "Batman" thru some of "Diamonds & Pearls" (or maybe only on "Thunder" on that album) his sound got really sample based, compressed and claustrophobic.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Monday, 25 April 2016 01:27 (seven years ago) link

The Future
Lemon Crush
Electric Chair
Vicki Waiting

easy choice

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 April 2016 01:29 (seven years ago) link

I love a lot of "Batman" and some stuff off GF but after Lovesexy the music definitely took a different step.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Monday, 25 April 2016 01:29 (seven years ago) link

for killer headphone shit GB's "Elephants & Flowers," "Joy in Repetition," "The Question of U" await your discovery.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 April 2016 01:30 (seven years ago) link

Yeah it's a really enveloping listen, so much going on but quite a gentle and approachable way.

Tim F, Monday, 25 April 2016 01:30 (seven years ago) link

"Vicki Waiting" has terrible lyrics.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Monday, 25 April 2016 01:31 (seven years ago) link

not worse than "I Wish U Heaven." And so what?

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 April 2016 01:32 (seven years ago) link

Guess what -- I've listened to all of his stuff on headphones. I was there, maaaan. But i don't want to get into a dick size contest here. I'll agree to disagree with you on the merits of "Lovesexy".

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Monday, 25 April 2016 01:35 (seven years ago) link

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Monday, 25 April 2016 04:08 (seven years ago) link

The best thing to come out of Batman was the 'Scandalous Sex Suite' which was only available on the 12" anyway.
