Single of the year?

Harry P, Saturday, 11 September 2004 18:02 (nineteen years ago) link

certainly the most overcompressed

zappi (joni), Saturday, 11 September 2004 18:52 (nineteen years ago) link

okay, what is the troof about this thing? is it not Bangalter&Falcon?

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:51 (nineteen years ago) link

and yeah, it really scratches an itch in my brainium, but it really annoys me girlfriend, so go figgah.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Bangalter is not behind it. He hammered the track in his DJ sets and everyone thought it was him, but its not.
Winwood even recorded the vocal (he heard the version where his voice was sampled and liked it so much he offered to re-record it).

Harry P, Saturday, 11 September 2004 21:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Recognise the chorus but can’t remember where you heard it? Well, here’s the answer…

Hotly tipped to become the dance track of the year, Eric Prydz’s ‘Call On Me’ was originally a 1980s smash hit for Steve Winwood called ‘Valerie’. When Winwood heard the remix he thought it was so good he not only gave his permission to use the samples, he even re-recorded his vocals especially for the track!

The story of Eric Prydz the DJ and Producer also begins back in the 80s when Eric began to make music at the age of 9 in Stockholm, Sweden. After a developing a nasty habit of breaking and entering in order to “borrow” his school’s keyboards he soon landed himself in a Swedish reform school. Nevertheless, this set back merely strengthened his resolve and, buoyed by encouragement from influential friends such as Steve Angello, Prydz was soon producing tracks that found their way into the record boxes of some of the worlds most high profile DJs.

Featuring a class of stunning gymnasts, these girls certainly know a thing or two about a good workout. Check the video out now!

See the video here

Video Man, Sunday, 12 September 2004 01:57 (nineteen years ago) link

i smell staelth marketing here. anyway. the prydz track is nice but i miss the tinny synth chords. withuot them the song is all buildup and no release.

:| (....), Sunday, 12 September 2004 09:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Shittest release of the year, and the original was awful too.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Sunday, 12 September 2004 10:22 (nineteen years ago) link

The story I heard was that Call On Me, the Bangalter-Falcon version, was an earlier version of So Much Love To Give and eventually mutated into the latter. But Bangalter hammered it in his DJ sets and Prydz then ripped it off.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 12 September 2004 18:15 (nineteen years ago) link

shite

grumpy bastard (grumpy_bastard), Sunday, 12 September 2004 18:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Steve Winwood was in Blues Brothers 2000. This is fairly radge too.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 12 September 2004 18:59 (nineteen years ago) link

After a developing a nasty habit of breaking and entering in order to “borrow” ...

so Prydz's nasty habits continue?

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:39 (nineteen years ago) link

This is bollocks, Prydz ripped it off.

Bangalter/Falcon were going to use Call On Me but decided to make So Much Love To Give the vocal sample instead. Falcon has been playing it for AGES, as in 2 or 3 years.

Prydz is a fraud and it's disgusting.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:49 (nineteen years ago) link

And "Harry P" can fuck off back to Ministry of Sound PR offices.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Didn't know about the politics of this. Thanks Ronan.

Even so, wouldn't it've been better to keep the original sampled vocal, rather than Winwood rerecording it?

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:52 (nineteen years ago) link

And for what it's worth we get Prydz releases into the shop all the time and all the one's that aren't rip offs are absolutely dire worse than Subliminal at their worst rubbish.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:54 (nineteen years ago) link

I mean at least the other Bangalter rip off merchants like Patrick Alavi can actually make a DECENT RECORD!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 12 September 2004 20:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Ronan is the new Jess aka Manno Oatington.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Sunday, 12 September 2004 21:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Manno Oatington is a pretty good name

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 12 September 2004 21:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Use it.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Sunday, 12 September 2004 21:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Does the Bangalter Call On Me actually sound like So Much Love To Give then, I mean, with the fuzzy pads and filtered blur sound and so forth? Or have I been listening to the wrong record all this time?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 12 September 2004 21:36 (nineteen years ago) link

its a really good track though regardless who done it first.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 13 September 2004 10:36 (nineteen years ago) link

I like this. Against my better judgement. Haven't heard the version to which Ronan refers, so I can't make the comparison.

The video is terrible. But possibly So Terrible Its Good.

potentially the worst single of the summer, and after reading the whole "rip off" bit, i hate it even more now.

who ever thought it would be a good idea to sample steve winwood in the first place? ugh

I'm banning my son from watching this video. It's far too perverted for my sons eyes. I can't have him watching semi naked girls doing aerobics.

can bagnalter sue him?

:| (....), Sunday, 19 September 2004 21:35 (nineteen years ago) link

unlikely, as Winwood would have cause to sue Bangalter/Falcon over their 'original' version. this kind of thing is/was common enough that Bangalter is used and resigned to it now anyway surely given the exact same way it happened in '99 with Space Dust (tragically getting to #1 whereas Stardust didn't) and all the subsequent 'Music Sounds Better With You' rip-offs. My suggestion is that Bangalter make tracks that are harder to imitate.

teh pow! (blueski), Monday, 20 September 2004 09:41 (nineteen years ago) link

won't we seem like a big bunch of sillies if "harry prydz" turns out to be a cheeky bangalter psdeuonym.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 20 September 2004 09:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Harry? and no it's definitely not a psuedonym, Prydz is Swedish, much more facey than TB and has done numerous other remixes and tracks.

brilliant, brilliant song!

for some reason i thought the sample was from a phil collins song, before i was bluntly set straight in the pub tonight. i don't find the video very sexy. better without the visual accompaniment, defo.

hmm. according to topplers mail order update, an eric prydz remix of alter ego's "rocker" is now available. is this good or disappointing news?

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:59 (nineteen years ago) link

potentially good! i heard a Prydz remix of another track (can't remember what right now) and liked it - up there with Galleon's 'So I Begin' for example, despite the rather shameful business of ripping off Tommy B

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 19 November 2004 18:03 (nineteen years ago) link

f that bloody ERIC PRYDZ track, Call On Me, has been irritating you, it may be because the producer is DJ MARK SMITH – half of JIVE BUNNY, the most annoying act of all time.

hang on, Eric Prydz in 'not actually a real Swede' shockah??

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 19 November 2004 18:04 (nineteen years ago) link

prydz first release on his own label (cirez-d: control freak) is cool as well so i dont realy mind him beign a plagiarist anymore. fickle me. crosspost.

:| (....), Friday, 19 November 2004 18:14 (nineteen years ago) link

His Remix of Rocker isn't too bad actually. but it's not a patch on the original. I have a few drum'n'bass tracks of his somewhere too, which are stunningly mediocre.

probably wouldn't fit anyway, too bad cuz this thing could use some poppier moments rather than just one epic after another that uses (mostly) the same tricks

gonna see if I can pick up the CD for cheap since I think reducing these tracks from 9-10 minutes to 6-7 may help a lot. they're not even all that repetitive but this thing is just really long!
