MAGIK MARKERS - HOLY SHIT!

This band is so raging, has anybody else heard them? The lead singer was railing about like some lunatic hotdog gobbler what with her guitar smashing and kook-screeching, etc while leggy girl decides between prissy school girl or jilted ex-lover tearing the shit out of your face while sweet Pete Nolan pounds out drum construction like JC tied to a metronome. Pretty much bands 1-10 on my top ten list for this week. And Byron C. is going to put out their next LP? Fuck yes.

yah, they played live on my radio show, it was the rats. old cassettes are boss, but really quietly recorded. cdr on slippytown sparklin like diamonds in my brain.

Magik Markers are horribly overrated. All hype, nothing of sonic interest. I mean, come on, compare them to a million other noise rock bands out there. It's just Sonic Youth followed by music journo types hyping this band. OMG they bled on stage! I'd rather see Gwar for real entertainment.

Though they're young, I suppose there's always room for improvement.

I wonder if they can actually play chords or anything. That would be pretty funny yet cool if they couldn't.

Either way, one of the best live acts I've seen in the last couple years.

Dan Abraham, Wednesday, 18 January 2006 16:35 (eighteen years ago) link

No, you should probably try Afrirampo or AIDS Wolf for your noizeploitation kicks.

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 16:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Girl's hot; band sucks

Reggie, Wednesday, 18 January 2006 17:40 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, that's my point. Guys get excited cause it's girlz noize. When I saw them live, they looked completely lost on stage, like, 'uh, how many ways can I vary hitting the guitar with my fist? Maybe I'll stomp on it!' There's a sort of virtuosic familiarity that even noise musicians develop with their instrument, and these kids don't have it. Go for the theatrics, if you like.

Dare (Dare), Thursday, 19 January 2006 00:09 (eighteen years ago) link

what you are confusing as a lack of virtuosity is in fact an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT form of said technicianship.

Rizz (Rizz), Monday, 13 February 2006 18:40 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, I'm reviewing this for my radio station right now. It's definitely the best recording of theirs so far (and I've heard pretty much all of them). The production isn't so shitty and they actually sound somewhere near as powerful as they are live on disc for once.

methanie tanner, Tuesday, 14 February 2006 02:47 (eighteen years ago) link

for the comedy and range of fun voices (and belgians chanting "bleed bleed bleed"), the Live in Belgium CD-R is also good. plus i actually can say that i listen to the second track on it, probably about once a week.

From the Ecstatic Peace website:

June 16, 2006
From Elisa: "The bets are in that the month long US Pillage Tour won't last more than a week and a half, and we're hoping to beat the spread. With stridently pro-gay rights roughneck trio Lambsbread, the online-slots-addicted Markers plan a swath of rust and airplane glue fueled invection to pay back their gambling debts, with 'vitamin shots' from their own Dr. Feelgood, Steve Gunn of GHQ. Tastemaker David 'D' Arby' Keenan had this to say of the 'Bread: 'amphetamine-hyped Mainliner gobbling speed-balls of beaming white light' and one kid this one time was like, '...whoa, I didn't know they were playing no fun.' But play they did, lathering the beer-gummed masses into an intense, stomping ecstasis and speeding up Schumann Resonance with just one show. The Magik Markers: well, we think some douchebag on a message board said it best when he posted, '"I Trust my Boobs and Vagina to sell Records, etc."' Amen Brother! So put on your leather shorts, fasten up your Antares Auto-Tune Pitch Correcting Plug-In, wheel yourself down to your local BPOE and catch Pillage Fever. Catch it!"

Hah yeah Elisa is the greatest. I mean, watching her play guitar live is one of my favorite show experiences in the world, as she is an alchemist and magician and I have no idea how she does it but it is astounding every time. So cool to see the songwriting side manifest itself so well too though.

Wild thread! Hadn't seen! Glad for new album, and here's a brief review-as-preview I wrote in 2010 for Columbus OH altweekly long ago:
The Magik Markers
3/23 @ The Summit
“America’s past pays America’s rent,” Elisa Ambroglio sneers amidst the lost highway traffic of
Balf Quarry, the Magic Markers’ current album. Familiar images and sounds of rebellion are too easy to fall into. So the Markers trace a place where sludge keeps speeding up, punk and metal elements turn pop and back, while busts of gutless dreamers seem headed for the mirror. The tension continues as Ambroglio’s voice and guitar spell out the lottery slogan, ”You can’t win/If you don’t play”, like a neon sign in the smog.
Woody G salutes you, Markers!
