Use your imagination

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 13:14 (nineteen years ago) link

you have chosen one phrase in the captain beefheart lexicon and asked what it actually means?

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 13:15 (nineteen years ago) link

FAST AND BULBOUS

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 13:15 (nineteen years ago) link

It means "take these labels off of me using only your lips and tongue".

A simple enough request, I'd have thought.

Also, a tin teardrop.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 13:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Beefheart's debut, Safe As Milk, originally came with this bumper sticker:

http://www.beefheart.com/datharp/albums/official/pics/bumperstickersm.jpg

The best way to remove it from your car was...yep, you guessed it!

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 14:12 (nineteen years ago) link

It means "take these labels off of me using only your lips and tongue".

but "lick" implies tongue only, does it not?

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 16:39 (nineteen years ago) link

it's slang for "pull my bat chain"

MAY THE BABY JESUS SHUT YOUR MOUTH AND OPEN YOU MIND

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 16:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Rather than I want to hold your hand,
I wanna swallow you whole
'n I wanna lick you everywhere it's pink
'n everywhere you think
Whole kit 'n kaboodle 'n the kitchen sink
Heaven's sexy as hell
Life is integrated,
Goes together so well
'n so on
Well, I'm gonna go on 'n do my washing
Well, now you may think I'm crazy but I want you to
Lick my decals off baby
'n I don't want you to be lazy
'cause it's drivin' me crazy
'n this song ain't no sing-song
It's all about the birds 'n the bees
'n where it went all wrong
'n where it all belongs
'n the earth all go down on their knees
lookin' for ah little ease
She stuck out her toungue 'n the fun begun
She stuck out her toungue 'n the fun begun
She stuck it out at me, 'n I just thumbed my nose
'n went on washing my clothes

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 16:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Well that's that cleared up then

"FUTURE: What label are you on now?

CAPTAIN: I wrote 'Lick My Decals Off, Baby', and I'm having a little trouble getting back on a label, because they know I believe in it. But we're in negotiation with several companies Epic, Capitol..."

Don't anyone panic or get too excited just yet, but it sounds as if maybe, just maybe, Rhino are finally going to release Lick My Decals Off Baby....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 9 February 2006 22:34 (eighteen years ago) link

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Captain Beefheart is my favorite performer/band of all time. I've never been able to find a reasonably priced copy of Lick My Decals Off, so I've never actually heard it. If this is true (I'm preparing to be disappointed, but if it is real, I'll go crazy) then this is going to be the best day of the year.

I'll also pick up the other remasters of course, although to my ears, the originals don't sound that bad at all. At least not in the way that Prince or the Smiths sound bad on CD.

Lee is Free (Lee is Free), Thursday, 9 February 2006 22:43 (eighteen years ago) link

Have you heard TMR / Clear Spot / Spotlight Kid on vinyl or any of the tracks from them that are on The Dust Blows Forward?

If these are remastered as well as the rest of the stuff on The Dust Blows Forward they'll be a revelation.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 9 February 2006 23:08 (eighteen years ago) link

No, to be honest I've never even owned a record player (I'm 17 years old...I kind of missed that generation) so I was referring to the CDs. I'm listening to Trout Mask Replica now and it could use a volume boost but all the different instruments and parts sound pretty clear to me.

Lee is Free (Lee is Free), Thursday, 9 February 2006 23:11 (eighteen years ago) link

I first heard all of them on CD but subsequently bought them on vinyl - and I rather think you are in for a major, but most pleasant, shock!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 9 February 2006 23:23 (eighteen years ago) link

its easy to find high quality downloads of this album

and its truly fabulous

justsaying, Thursday, 9 February 2006 23:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Lee: Buy a goddamned turntable. At the very least, most classic albums are much, much cheaper at your local used store on vinyl.

js (honestengine), Friday, 10 February 2006 02:02 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, but new vinyl usually costs the same as a new CD and I'm much more likely to find a specific title I want used on CD than I am on vinyl. Plus, vinyl elitists bug the shit out of me.

Lee is Free (Lee is Free), Friday, 10 February 2006 02:17 (eighteen years ago) link

Both have their strengths and weaknesses but in this day and age a CD player is the essential, a turntable is a luxury.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 10 February 2006 09:14 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, yesterday I saw an ad of the "CaptBeefheart...Milk/Trout/Personal/Decals...£8.99" type in one of the music mags.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 10 February 2006 09:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Excellent news for everyone! Only drawback is that my own "Decals" CD is suddenly worth much, much less $ as an ebay item. (Not that I had any intention of selling.)

Myonga Von Buggyboogiewoogie (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 10 February 2006 09:36 (eighteen years ago) link

On the contrary. Now is when you make yourself a copy (to listen to until the reissue) and sell your copy to someone who has not yet read the news.

Dave will do (dave225.3), Friday, 10 February 2006 17:45 (eighteen years ago) link

Nope, I'm keeping it: Among other things, it's a souvenir of my visitation to New Orleans, where I bought it back in 1990.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Saturday, 11 February 2006 00:57 (eighteen years ago) link

I'll be keeping my CD as a souvenir of having spent an almost insane amount of money on a Japanese import.

I was THIS close to starting a "Why the Hell Isn't Lick My Decals Off Baby" re released thread!! WELL, WILL IT EVER BE RE RELEASED!?!? I'M GONNA GO INSANE!!!

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Saturday, 11 February 2006 10:39 (eighteen years ago) link

I've never actually started a thread about it, but I have hurled tirades of abuse at Rhino about this on several occasions from the safety of several other threads.

not really sure why I didn't buy the nice 180g pressing of this when I saw it cheap last year in sydney. good news nontheless!

Heh heh...shades of me paying $40 for an ebay video of "Koyaanisqatsi", only to see it re-released on DVD (and retailing for ten bucks!) less than a year later...

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Saturday, 11 February 2006 15:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Geez. I didn't even realize this was so scarce.

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Saturday, 11 February 2006 16:23 (eighteen years ago) link

It's not too hard to find on vinyl - but on CD it's been like hens teeth and rocking horse shit.

"Heh heh...shades of me paying $40...."

A mere $40? A mere bagatelle, a drop in the ocean. Iirc it cost me nearly $20 in P&P [sobs].

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Saturday, 11 February 2006 20:29 (eighteen years ago) link

I had a friend who named his band "Koyaanisqatsi". I laugh just thinking about it, the dumbass thought he was being deep or something, and he couldn't even pronounce it!

There is no mention of these reissues on the Rhino site. Anyone have further information?

Fastnbulbous (Fastnbulbous), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 07:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Nope, but the DVD "Captain Beefheart - Under Review" which came out on Chrome Dream a week or too back has wildly exceeded my expectations.

Of course my expectations weren't particularly high - The Captain does seem to have been the subject / source of more than his fair share of pointless compliations and dodgy merchandise in recent months and Chrome Dreams previous contribution (a dodgy-sounding CD of an old interview) certainly didn't lead me to expect much - but just for a change this really is worth acquiring for all good little Beefheart obsessives.

I've also been hearing very good things about this:

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000ELJ8PI.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Suffice it to say however that Ozit's latest contribution "The Captain's Last Live Concert Plus" is inevitably of the same piss-poor quality as most of the other Beefheart material they've released, and is probably best avoided.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 20:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Maybe I should sell my CD before this reissue deal comes out. I bought mine at the regular CD price in a regular record store back in the early '90s. It's the Rhino reissue. Now I see them being offered for $100 on Amazon Marketplace - though I don't know if people are actually buying them at that price.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 20:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Rhino folks didn't know anything about this when I feverishly inquired.

Instrumental-only tracks from the sessions, sans the Beef. Magic Band indeed.
