When is Fantasia's album coming out?

I'm sick of listening to "I Believe" and "Summertime" over and over again. When is girl gonna hit me up with some more fake Macy Gray?

Details from American ILMers plz.

Did you know in Australia the Idol winner gets one week to record their album and it's pumped out less than a month after the grand final? Fantasia is just being slack.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:10 (nineteen years ago) link

It came out today.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Wow I somehow sensed that there was some Fantasia action in the air. TELL ME MORE!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:28 (nineteen years ago) link

There's a review of the disc over at AMG

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:47 (nineteen years ago) link

She reminds me more of a cross between Stephanie Mills and Mary J. Blige than Macy Gray, in that she's only occasionally hoarse and when she is, it's cuz she's FEELIN' it (a la Mary).

I like the album a lot. It's remarkably strong (and full of personality) for an AI full-length. "Baby Mama" is insta-classic.

Rich (Rich), Monday, 29 November 2004 01:28 (nineteen years ago) link

But isn't "I Believe" just "A Moment Like This" with the lyrics sung in a different order?

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 29 November 2004 01:34 (nineteen years ago) link

She's nothing like Macy Gray. Macy Gray sounds like Donald Duck on crack.

Leelee, Monday, 29 November 2004 01:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes. Luckily, the rest of the album (save "Always On My Mind" and the content-to-be-a-curio "Summertime") is more willing to commit to a side, musically. It's not gray-area R&B-ish pop, but full-on R&B (though nowadays, its edges are too few and far between for it to be played on anything but Urban AC radio on the US).

Rich (Rich), Monday, 29 November 2004 01:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah she's not really like Macy Gray, I just perversely enjoy comparing them because I don't really like Macy Gray much at all.

I'm looking forward to hearing the album despite the negative allmusic review.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 29 November 2004 11:49 (nineteen years ago) link

I saw this in the market on Saturday! She looks very cool on the cover. Tell me more about her please.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 29 November 2004 11:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Alex she was the winner of American Idol Season 3!

When she sang the Idol single "I Believe" on the final night of the competition I think i cried.

"I Believe" is great but try if you can to download the live version from that night, or even better that and the Diana DiGarmo version (she was the runner up) to see just how impossibly better Fantasia was.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 29 November 2004 11:59 (nineteen years ago) link

She has this great girly Southern voice which erupts into this ragged quasi-gospel shriek on the big notes (hence the Macy Gray comparisons), it's brutally effective as a tearjerker. There was a spot-on critique quoted on ILE once, about how she had a "strategic lack of control" or something (ie. she knows exactly when to sound like she doesn't know how to be restrained).

If I was pulling the strings I'd get Teedra Moses to write for her - they'd be a perfect match.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 29 November 2004 12:03 (nineteen years ago) link

That rings a bell actually. I watched American Idol intermittently and drunkenly last year so I didn't know any of their names, but she sounds familiar.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 29 November 2004 12:08 (nineteen years ago) link

She was tall with really short hair and a squeaky voice. The other tall black R&B singer with really short hair was La Toya, who was more in the grand, stirring note-perfect "classic" R&B, and who looked like that actress who played the K Directorate agent on Alias and the weird human eating demon who made peace on earth on Angel.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 29 November 2004 12:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Actually I may be mistaken, I'm sure the massive-voiced R&B singer I'm thinking of was fat as well. It may not have been the right series, bear in mind ITV2's penchant for repeating old series of all programmes ever ad nauseam.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 29 November 2004 12:16 (nineteen years ago) link

You're thinking of Jennifer Hudson, who was also amazing but voted out earlier.

Paul made this great comment about Jennifer some time after she was booted which I always carry with me: "Jennifer can always find work battling hurricanes, parting seas and invoking divine manifestations"

Ugh I had to look over the AI3 thread on ILE and realised that in a moment of insanity i actually switched allegiance from Fantasia to Diana at one stage! What was I thinking?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 29 November 2004 12:40 (nineteen years ago) link

WHAT WERE YOU THINKING??????????? I blame it on YOOF.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 29 November 2004 14:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 29 November 2004 15:05 (nineteen years ago) link

When are LaToya's and Jennifer's albums coming out????

Actually, an AI supergroup with LaToya, Jennifer, and Tamyra would be amazing.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 29 November 2004 15:26 (nineteen years ago) link

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 29 November 2004 15:59 (nineteen years ago) link

I think that for a long time I managed to miss all of Fantasia's best performances. The night I said I wanted Diana to win i was feeling down on all the performers and Diana at least seemed endearingly silly. Then she lost my vote by revealing herself to be a boring diva after all.

Writing an autobiography about your illiteracy, then not being able to read it makes Fantasia somewhat NOIZE, does it not?

She put on a big Afro wig, and as the screen above the stage showed vintage images of the Black Panthers, Fantasia asked everybody in the audience to give the "Black Power" fist as the band broke into the Beatles' "Come Together" (key parts of which John Lennon lifted from Chuck Berry). And after telling security to let fans behave as they wished, Fantasia, who had been shouting "DC!" every 45 seconds or so, paid tribute to the town's indigenous music and caused a claustrophobic's nightmare by launching into "Overnight Scenario" from go-go faves Rare Essence.

Wow.

this is a terrific album. The title track makes the most of her craggy delivery.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 28 April 2013 23:01 (eleven years ago) link

Yes. Though I think its charms are pretty similar to her previous album so anyone who slept on that but likes this should definitely backtrack.

Tim F, Sunday, 28 April 2013 23:07 (eleven years ago) link

Haven't listened to this one yet - I enjoyed the last one but When I See You is definitely her high-point for me so far.

Matt DC, Monday, 29 April 2013 09:21 (eleven years ago) link

to be fair that is a high-point of all music, ever

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Monday, 29 April 2013 09:39 (eleven years ago) link

ugh i cannot surmount this lumpen slog of a title track

how do we unseat the abhorrent dirgemarm emeli sandé, she is worse than thatcher ffs

r|t|c, Monday, 29 April 2013 10:04 (eleven years ago) link

this turns out to be really good set of songs but imo dulling track sequencing makes you work to think beyond just a level standard of decent quality

send sande to the back of the queue, put 'lose to win'/'end of me' at the heart, break up the peppy 'get it right' to 'lighthouse' 7-10 tranche, and then things start to pop out and complement each other

this i decree

r|t|c, Monday, 29 April 2013 10:23 (eleven years ago) link

i agree that the sequencing needs work, though imo it gets better as the album goes on - first half is a bunch of pretty great songs jumbled up senselessly ("supernatural love" is no opener, "ain't all bad" is too big and grandiose to come as soon as second, why is the interlude so soon in the track listing [or exist at all tbh]). though i'm not sure how i'd do it, i quite like how it builds up to "lose to win" (which actually sounds a lot better in this context than as a single) and "in deep" is a pretty stunning closer - one of her most effective vocal performances, cutting out the hamminess for her loopiest, most intense lyrics. digging her nails into your skin!

i have a real soft spot for the bonkers gospel-meets-EDM MJ/whitney tribute bonus track

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 30 April 2013 16:23 (eleven years ago) link

i guess another thing that doesn't help is whereas while "man of the house" obv towered over its parent album because it was just that good, it also fit into it neatly - whereas "without me" is the equivalent standout here but also seems to have wandered in from a different album

I forgot in which recent thread I posted that "Lose to Win" has gotten nonstop play on our local adult R&B station. It's amazing it's only gotten to #38 on the R&B chart.
